During the year it has evolved in terms of size and content. The most pleasing feature of which is the ‘readers forum’ which continues to grow. The comments, information and stories provided by you, our readers are highly valued and makes CTH a people focused newsletter. Naval history is multi-faceted in that it is not possible to write about ships, submarines and aircraft without including the people who operate them, maintain them and provide essential support services. We really appreciate receiving historical information and stories on non-mainstream issues. A classic example was the role played by Navy bandsmen posted to RAN Cruisers. At sea Bandsmen were part of the Gunnery Department. Having undertaken a special fire control course, they were employed manning the Transmitting Station (TS) day and night. Here they assembled all the details needed for the guns to fire accurately. They were a vital part of the Gunnery Department. The story of a Bandsman’s World War 2 experiences is the subject of a Society monograph. Our collection of 95 monographs are available for sale. Interested readers can e-mail the Society for a copy. With the launch of our new website in the coming months, the monographs and other products will be available for sale through our on-line shop. With our new website, move to e-commerce and a new format Call the Hands (HTML) in the coming months, ‘privacy’ has been a key consideration. We are conscious that in changing the format of Call the Hands to HTML and using a third-party product for its distribution (MailChimp) subscribers e-mail address will be provided to that third party. Our plan is to make the switch when our website is expected to launch in December 2017. Should this be a concern, please advise us if you wish to ‘unsubscribe’. Advantages for the Society and readers of using MailChimp as the tool for publishing CTH include, information useful to us on issues important to readers and it provides readers with better links to resources on the NHSA website. In addition to generous financial donations made by members with their annual membership renewal the Society’s research library has benefitted greatly from the donation of books from several sources. In some cases, such as that of a 1915 entry to the RAN College, heritage items, journals and diaries are passed to the Naval Heritage Collection. David Stratton Editor Coming Launch of the Australian Naval History Video and Podcast Series On 3 October 2017 the Chief of Navy, Vice Admiral Tim Barrett will launch the Australian Naval History video and podcast series at the Seapower Conference in Sydney. This series is produced by the Naval Studies Group at University of NSW Canberra in partnership with the Australian Naval Institute, the Naval Historical Society, the RAN Seapower Centre and the Submarine Institute of Australia. In each 50 minute episode an expert panel explores a different incident, battle or event in Australian Naval history. The panels vary in composition and include Australia’s best selling naval historian Mike Carlton, world famous ship wreck hunter David Mearns, Professor Tom Frame, Dr Kathryn Spurling and the members of the Naval Studies Group - Rear Admiral James Goldrick, Vice Admiral Peter Jones, Commodore Jack McCaffrie and Dr David Stevens. The video version includes photographs and maps to further illuminate the topic. Series One includes episodes ranging from the Oberon class submarines in RAN Service, the Battle of the Coral Sea, the formation of the Women’s Royal Australian Naval Service, the HMAS Australia Court Martial, the RAN in World War I and HMAS Sydney in the Mediterranean during World War II and her subsequent loss. After the 3 October launch, a new episode of Australian Naval History will be released simultaneously on YouTube and iTunes each week. Viewers and listeners will be able to subscribe to automatically receive their next episode. Docking the ex-HMAS Sydney On 12th June 2017, Ex-HMAS Sydney was docked at the Western Australian Government owned Australian Marine Complex Common User Facility in Henderson Western Australia by AMC Management, the Facility Manager and Floating Dock Operator. The defence contractor Birdon was awarded the disposal contract by the Department of Defence and in conjunction with Defence chose the Common User Facility to undertake the final dismantling of the ship. You can watch a video of this on youtube at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eadJBJE0qMI 2 RAN 75th Anniversary of Diver Training at HMAS Penguin This year marks the 75th anniversary of the RAN diver training transferring to HMAS Penguin, Mosman, from Garden Island. In that year, 1942, HMAS Penguin was completed, commissioned and started service as a naval hospital. It was war-time, General Macarthur had been appointed as Supreme Commander of all allied forces in the South West Pacific and Australia ramped up its contribution to the war effort. Trained divers were being turned out faster than ever before. Divers were needed for many different jobs as records show. These included more mundane tasks such as recovering items dropped overboard, clearing fouled props and making minor repairs underwater. At the other end of the scale there was some extremely hazardous work for the Render Mines Safe (RMS) men, some of whom undertook diver training. There was also the one-off event of recovering the midget submarines from Sydney Harbour. In between there was a wide range of work carried out by the divers, including salvaging ships and aircraft and laying and maintaining boom defence nets. Typically, four men were trained at a time. The officer in charge of diver training was Lt Lowrie. At the same time, he was appointed the Port Diving Officer for Sydney Harbour. Training took place on boats, including the private ferry Lady Denman and at Chowder Bay, adjacent to Clifton Gardens. An unfortunate incident occurred here in late 1943. There was an army man, a native of Thursday Island in the water transport group at Clifton Gardens. At Thursday Island he had dived for pearls. In Thursday Island, they typically used a helmet with no suit or a half suit cut-off at the waist. On this basis, he was allowed to dive in a helmet without full gear and without close supervision. Unfortunately, he became entangled in the ropes and drowned before the staff realised. On Sunday 17th September from 9:30 am, a group of enthusiasts will recreate old fashioned navy diving using “hard hats” and all the associated equipment. The public is invited to come and watch. There will be an opportunity to look at the equipment used, take pictures and learn about the history of this type of diving. Visitors are requested to stay back from the actual diving area. The divers would be keen to meet any old navy, commercial or recreational divers or their families. The day is being co-ordinated by Allan Kessler, 0487 388 975 or [email protected]. Allan’s grandfather trained as a navy diver at HMAS Penguin in 1943. Blue, published by The Naval Historical Society of Australia, 1976. 3 Book Donations: A Wonderful Response The Society is most grateful for the donation of a significant number of books following last month’s request. Three treasured collections of books were donated to the Society in August, by Graeme Andrews OAM (who donated almost 200 books), Russel Vasey, and the widow of the CMDR R (Ray) F Williams DSC MID VRD* ADC RANR. (Ray died about 18 months ago.) Graeme Andrews joined the Royal Australian Navy in 1955 at the age of seventeen. He qualified in gunnery as a fire control man and had been promoted to petty officer fire control when he was discharged in 1968. On discharge, Graeme was awarded a seaman’s trade certificate which enabled him to gain employment first as a deckhand on harbour tugs and then as a master of Sydney and Manly ferries. This encouraged him to take an interest in maritime history and to collect an enormous quantity of related books and photographs. These covered ferries, work boats, shipyards and boatyards throughout New South Wales . He subsequently donated approximately 10,000 photographs to the City of Sydney. Graeme has edited various maritime publications and is a regular contributor to Sydney’s Afloat magazine. In 2005 he was made an Honorary Life Member of the Naval Historical Society for his splendid efforts in recording Naval and Maritime history over many years.

Faulconbridge NSW 2776 1 2 Foreword Of all the ships that have flown the ensign of the Royal Australian Navy, there has never been one quite like the first HMAS Perth, a cruiser of the Second World War. In her short life of just less than three years as an Australian warship she sailed all the world’s great oceans, from the icy wastes of the North Atlantic to the steamy heat of the Indian Ocean and the far blue horizons of the Pacific. She survived a hurricane in the Caribbean and months of Italian and German bombing in the Mediterranean. One bomb hit her and nearly sank her. She fought the Italians at the Battle of Matapan in March, 1941, which was the last great fleet action of the British Royal Navy, and she was present in June that year off Syria when the three Australian services - Army, RAN and RAAF - fought together for the first time. Eventually, she was sunk in a heroic battle against an overwhelming Japanese force in the Java Sea off Indonesia in 1942. Fast and powerful and modern for her times, Perth was a light cruiser of some 7,000 tonnes, with a main armament of eight 6- inch guns, and a top speed of about 34 knots. She had a crew of about 650 men, give or take, most of them young men in their twenties.

Few changes in naval warfare have been as all embracing as the role played by the aircraft carrier, which is, without doubt, the most impressive, and at the same time the most controversial, manifestation of sea power. From 1948 until 1983 the aircraft carrier formed a significant component of the Australian Defence Force and the place of an aircraft carrier in defence strategy and the force structure seemed relatively secure. Although cost, especially in comparison to, and in competition with, other major defence projects, was probably the major issue in the demise of the aircraft carrier and an organic fixed-wing naval air capability in the Australian Defence Force, cost alone can obscure the ftindamental reordering of Australia's defence posture and strategic thinking, which significantly contributed to the decision not to replace HMAS Melbourne.

Abstract This thesis examines a small component of the Australian Navy, the Fleet Air Arm. Naval aviators have been contributing to Australian military history since 1914 but they remain relatively unheard of in the wider community and in some instances, in Australian military circles. Aviation within the maritime environment was, and remains, a versatile weapon in any modern navy but the struggle to initiate an aviation branch within the Royal Australian Navy was a protracted one. Finally coming into existence in 1947, the Australian Fleet Air Arm operated from the largest of all naval vessels in the post battle ship era; aircraft carriers. HMAS Albatross, Sydney, Vengeance and Melbourne carried, operated and fully maintained various fixed-wing aircraft and the naval personnel needed for operational deployments until 1982. These deployments included contributions to national and multinational combat, peacekeeping and humanitarian operations. With the Australian government’s decision not to replace the last of the aging aircraft carriers, HMAS Melbourne, in 1982, the survival of the Australian Fleet Air Arm, and its highly trained personnel, was in grave doubt. This was a major turning point for Australian Naval Aviation; these versatile flyers and the maintenance and technical crews who supported them retrained on rotary aircraft, or helicopters, and adapted to flight operations utilising small compact ships.

The Warfare Officer Community symbiotically contains personnel from the seaman, Submarine, Aviation, Hydrographic and Meteorological, Mine Clearance Diving and Naval Communications and Intelligence groups. The Warfare Officers Career Handbook is a source document for Warfare Officers to consult as they progress through their careers. It is intended to inform and stimulate consideration of career issues and to provide a coherent guide that articulates Navy’s requirements and expectations. The book provides a summary of the Warfare branch specialisations and the sub-specialisations that are embedded within them, leading in due course to entry into the Charge Program and the Command opportunities that follow. The Warfare Officers Career Handbook also describes the historical derivation of current warfare streams to provide contemporary relevance and the cultural background within which maritime warfare duties are conducted. It discusses the national context in which Warfare Officers discharge their duties. Leadership and ethical matters are explored, as is the inter-relationship between personal attributes, values, leadership, performance and sense of purpose. There is no intention that this handbook replicate or replace extant policy and procedural guidelines. Rather, the handbook focuses on the enduring features of maritime warfare. Policy by its nature is transient. Therefore, as far as possible, the Warfare Officers Career Handbook deals with broad principles and not more narrowly defined policies that rightly belong in other documents.

    From the President Welcome to this edition of Call the Hands, our last in the Society’s 50th anniversary year. It includes a variety of short articles which are connected through various themes including the RAN’s first ship, HMAS Parramatta (I) and her namesakes. Another connection is the shared anniversary of the Naval Association of Australia (NAA) celebrating its 100th anniversary. Accordingly, we acknowledge our many readers who are members of the NAA. Their service in the RAN (past and present) has contributed to the history of Australia’s great Navy. The Society’s close connection with Parramatta (I) stems from the not insignificant project to recover her bow and stern sections from a Hawksbury River mudflat. These sections are now prominently displayed in Sydney. Additional information about this fascinating project recently came to light and has been published in the December Naval Historical Review now being distributed to members. We also feature a recent NAA commemorative service for HMAS Parramatta (II) and recognition of the commissioning commanding officer of HMAS Parramatta (III), Rear Admiral Guy Griffiths RAN, Rtd. Many interesting and sometimes obscure naval stories remain untold. Occasional paper 97 is a good example. It is the story of a small party of sailors landed in Arnhem Land from HMAS Fremantle (I) in 1958 to observe Japanese pearl fishing operations. This story was shared by Eric Deshon with Australian National Maritime Museum’s oral history volunteers and published in the ANMM’s volunteer newsletter ‘All Hands’ in June 2018. Recording historic events on canvas has been a traditional art form which continues today.

However, it wasn’t until 1776 that the first submarine to make an attack on an enemy ship was built. Named the Turtle, it was designed by David Bushnell and was built with the intention of breaking the British of the submarine naval blockade in New York Harbor during the American Revolution. Operated by Sergeant Ezra Lee, the Turtle made an unsuccessful attack on a British ship on 7 September 1776. Several more submarines were attempted over the years, but it wasn’t until the beginning of the 20th century that modern day submarine warfare was born. At the start of World War I, submarines were still in their infancy. Considered to be ‘unethical’ and not fitting into the conventional rules of war, few foresaw the watershed in naval warfare that submarines were to bring about. Once their true capabilities were realised, submarines had a substantial impact on World War I: sinking ships, laying mines, blockading ports and providing escorts to trans-Atlantic convoys. During World War II, submarine technology advanced significantly. The Germans, who were operating U-Boats in the Atlantic Ocean, developed the ‘snorkel’ (allowing the boat to recharge its batteries while staying submerged).
