Course description: We will track the fascinating figure of the vampire this semester to find out what the fascination of figures (shapes, rhetorical tropes) and of this figure in particular could be. How is the vampire different from other monsters (cyborgs, zombies, werewolves, fairies, ghosts)? Why do we enjoy the vampire’s allure, composed of both beauty and death? (The dead rose turns up quite often as a signifier of vampires…) What textual strategies can we use for understanding vampire representations? How can vampires help us grasp narrative--and how can or does narrative help us glimpse vampires? How do sexuality, gender, race, nationality, class and ability intersect in the figures of vampires? We will read and watch key selected texts (verbal and visual) in detail, elaborating their contexts.

  • JUMP WISH-LIST Rules/Notes: Settings
JUMP WISH-LIST Rules/Notes: ● This list is solely for settings that don’t have jumps made yet. ● No jumps you want to see redone, I’m not going to go down this path. If there is any such setting mentioned on list, then as soon as it is pointed out to me, I’ll remove it. ● Settings already claimed will be either removed from list or have claim noted. I’ll accept info about claims only from the jump-maker who claimed it. ● I hope to maintain this list in such way that /tg/, SB and QQ communities can all check it out. If you don’t like something on it, just ignore it. After all, if jump is being made doesn’t mean you have to use it. Furthermore, we all have different tastes, be mindful of that. ● Fanfics will be listed separately. Some people like the idea of such jumps, some don’t. I might end up removing this section altogether just because it is so difficult to decide if certain fanfic would be acceptable for being turned into jump or not. ● Settings will be listed alphabetically within a genre, by their official name. Any other names will be included after that one. Please include genre and medium with any suggestions (e.g. KultHorror - Tabletop RPG; The Culture - Science Fiction - Novel) ● Rule of thumb – recommend settings that you would want to visit in order to interact with characters and storylines, not in order to get specific perks/powers/items. Settings: 0-9 ● 100, The (SF - TV Series) ● 300 (movies) ● 3x3 Eyes (manga) ● 7th Heaven (TV series) ● 9 (movie) ● 100 Bullets (vertigo) ● 11eyes (VN/anime) ● 2 Broke Girls (TV Series)

  • Underworld Vs the World of Darkness: Players and Filmgoers Respond to a Legal Battle
Networking Knowledge: Journal of the MeCCSA Postgraduate Network, Vol 2, No 1 (2009) ARTICLE Underworld vs the World of Darkness: Players and Filmgoers Respond to a Legal Battle RACHEL MIZSEI WARD, University of East Anglia ABSTRACT Even before its release, Underworld (2003) had proved controversial following a legal action for copyright infringement from White Wolf, a games publisher, and Nancy A Collins, a horror writer. Reaction was marked among White Wolf fans who debated the case in forums on both gaming and film sites. A significant number of fans were deeply critical of the actions of White Wolf, and they were more concerned about being able to see ‘their’ World of Darkness on screen than demonstrating loyalty to the company. This paper will explain the case and examine the reactions of fans at the time. KEYWORDS Role-playing; film; audiences; response; Internet. In September 2003 Sony Pictures released the film Underworld. Even before its release, the film had proved controversial following a legal action for copyright infringement from White Wolf, a games publisher, and Nancy A Collins, one of their fantasy writers. White Wolf alleged that Sony had used unique elements that they had developed for their World of Darkness line of role-playing games. It was also alleged that Love Among Monsters, a short story by Nancy A Collins and written for White Wolf’s game line, had been plagiarised in the film’s plot. This paper will explain the background to this case, including an examination of fans, Gothic and the World of Darkness. Henry Jenkins argues that ‘fandom … is born of a balance between fascination and frustration: if media content didn’t fascinate us, there would be no desire to engage with it; but if it didn’t frustrate us on some level, there would be no desire to rewrite or remake it’ (Jenkins 2006: 247).

  • Vampire Hunter D Bloodlust
Vampire Hunter D Bloodlust Created By Silentcrypt Updated 11-11-2020 1 Overview Much of the history of Earth was lost after the Third World War in 1999 when Humans nearly destroyed Earth with nuclear weapons. The Nobility, Vampires, foresaw the destruction the humans would unleash upon the world and hid themselves away in bunkers with enough supplies and technology to rebuild in the aftermath. With the world a wasteland of death and disease the Nobles emerged from their hidden shelters and set about conquering what remained. Fast forward more than 12,000 years into the future and the world has become completely unrecognizable. Creatures only heard of in myth and legend now stalk the world and beasts of unimaginable size swim through the desert wastes as if it were made of water. The Nobility, further divided into Greater Nobles and Lesser Nobles, have divided the world into Regions each ruled by a different Noble family. The humans live lives similar to something out of a sci fi western movie and are ruled by the Nobles. The Nobles care little for the humans, seeing them as nothing more than food and often people will go missing in the night without a sound. Those marked with the ‘Kiss of Nobility’ are often viewed as cursed beings bringing nothing but misfortune upon their families and communities and are often exiled due to fear. The Nobles have grown lazy in their excess and have lost much of their technology and splendor they once possessed. At the height of their power the Nobility were capable of 2 terraforming worlds, destroying planets, creating pocket dimensions, and so, so much more.

  • Waking the Undead
Waking the Undead New Vampire Cinema By Ken Gelder BFI-Palgrave Macmillan, 168pp, $29.95, 2012 ISBN 978-1844574407 Better off Dead: The Evolution of the Zombie as Post-Human Edited by Deborah Christie and Sarah Juliet Lauro Fordham University Press, 304pp, $30.00, 2011 ISBN 978-0823234479 Reviewed by Lydia Saleh Rofail NDEAD MONSTERS SUCH AS VAMPIRES AND ZOMBIES HAVE LONG HELD A MORBID fascination as evidenced in an array of literary, cinematic and popular Ucontexts throughout the ages. Whether signifying anxieties about predation and consumption, apocalyptic demise or the possibility of survival beyond death, these creatures draw our attention and play out aspects of our current condition. The vampire haunts our imaginations with notions of blood contamination, sexual transgression, indulgence and decadence. The eternally fascinating vampire embodies the dialectics of beauty and monstrosity, fear and passion, immortality and death. In New Vampire Cinema, Ken Gelder extends his earlier work in Reading the Vampire (1994), resurrecting this undead phantasm in a cogent exploration of cinematic vampire films from 1992 until 2010. Gelder’s goal is not to offer a compendium of every vampire film created, rather his methodology is ‘reasonably’ close analysis of over forty selected vampire films. Gelder’s key argument is that vampire films imagine their own demise which is an important part of how they recreate themselves. In other words, the vampires productively re-produce their own inauthenticity through the re- creation of the vampire genre. Gelder explores this conundrum of how and why vampire films re-create generic conventions or ‘what these films do and why they seem to do it over and over’ (v).

I liked the fact that he made this story longer by ...By Robert WaltersI liked the fact that he made this story longer by stretching it into two books. I love the series and I am always a little sad when I finish a book and the story is over. This is one of the reasons I started the series (aside from D being a bad a**). There are a ton of books in the series. Enough to keep me occupied for a while.0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. A good endingBy AnnaThis book provided a good, though not decisive, ending to the story begun in volume seven. The theme of this book is mostly about finding acceptance for the things you have done in the past as well as finding a place to belong in the future.

  • British Gothic Monsters in East Asian Culture: Ideas to Kick-Start Reading and Viewing
1 British Gothic monsters in East Asian culture: ideas to kick-start reading and viewing Dr Sarah Olive (Investigator, York, UK), Dr Alex Watson (Investigator, Nagoya, Japan), Dr Chelsea Swift (Research Assistant, York, UK) We gratefully acknowledge funding received from the Daiwa Foundation and ESRC York Impact Acceleration Account in 2017. We also acknowledge those who contributed to revising this document, originally produced in 2016, in late 2017/early 2018: Marie Honda (PhD candidate, Waseda), Samantha Landau (Showa Women’s University), Nicola McClements (student, SOAS), Lindsay Nelson (Meiji University), Jack Charles Tourner (student, SOAS), Atsuhiko Uchida (MA candidate, York), Ying Zou (PhD candidate, York). This annotated biblio/film/discography came out of a priming project funded by the University of York’s Culture and Communications Research Champions funding during summer 2016, as well as the ‘Gothic in Japan’ symposium led by Watson and Olive in January 2018 (for details see https://www.alexwatson.info/gothic-in-japan). Sharing it as a resource is intended to offer starting points for teachers, students and researchers interested in the influence of British Gothic monsters (with a focus largely on the nineteenth century) on twentieth- and twenty-first century East Asian culture. It is not intended to be definitive or representative: rather, in the spirit of Open Science, these are texts we have found interesting and useful in discussing British Gothic Monsters in East Asian culture. The rationales for the project are that existing research focuses almost predominantly on identifying Orientalism in British Gothic monster texts. This is despite the fact that for over two hundred years, British Gothic literature has been highly popular in East Asia, inspiring a slew of adaptations & reinventions i.e.
