MISSION STATEMENT It is the mission of the Kate Duncan Smith DAR School to educate the Once again, I am grateful for the boys and girls of Gunter Mountain. We believe the privilege of a sound opportunity to work with the Board of education is a heritage which should be enjoyed by all the citizens of our country. We believe all our children should be afforded such advantages Trustees, students, staff, and friends in as shall develop in them the largest capacities for performing the duties the coming months and years. I look of American citizenship and to enlighten them in the knowledge and forward to serving as your Chairman practice of pure and noble citizenship. We further believe the school and working with each of you as we environment should be disciplined with emphasis on positive attitudes and academic excellence which will nurture in our students the desire strive to meet the needs of the students to cherish, maintain and extend the institutions of American freedom to at KDS. foster true patriotism and love of country, and to aid in securing for mankind all the blessings of liberty. With high expectations, purposes Mrs. Harrison at the U.S. Capitol with and standards, the KDS DAR School accepts the missions to educate the 2016 Continental Congress Representatives youth of Gunter Mountain. Will Sanderson and LeeAnn Myers. 2 ThereExecutive are so many things Director’s I love about my job as Executive Message Director of Kate Duncan Smith DAR School. As we work to put together this annual report and share with the school’s friends the accomplishments of the past year, I’d like to share a few of them.

I love working with people who are passionate about serving children and who give their all day in and day out. From the dedicated faculty and staff members who are on the “front lines” in the classrooms and on the campus to the members of the Board of Trustees who support our school’s mission from places both near and far, it takes many hands to do the work of KDS.

I love seeing children grow and develop in a challenging academic environment. Our students have opportunities I would have never dreamed of when I was enrolled at KDS. Advanced Placement classes, online learning, dual enrollment college courses, Career Technical Center offerings, and traditional on- KDS Executive Director campus classes make it easy for every student to customize a curriculum suited to his or her own skills Heather W. Green and abilities and to learn at his or her own pace.

I love working for my alma mater and being a small part of this 93-year legacy of patriotic education on Gunter Mountain. KDS is so much more than the buildings that make up the campus, but it’s within those buildings that countless memories were made and continue to be shared. Generations who have had the privilege to attend this school carry on this legacy through memories and shared experiences, and they pass on their knowledge to those who follow. Times may change, but that feeling you get by being a graduate of KDS DAR School stays the same year after year.

And I love working with the DAR and other donors and stakeholders to ensure the children are able to thrive not only academically and socially, but also with patriotism, citizenship, and a reverence for our country’s founders, groundbreakers, and innovators. One of my greatest joys is in the friendships I have formed over the years with the numerous supporters of KDS and its students. You bring hope where often, there is none, and for that I am grateful.

We are all joined in the common goal of investing in the future by investing in KDS Executive Director children, and I thank each of you for giving me the opportunity to do what I love. Heather W. Green and dear friend Sara Craft

KDS Friends Play “Musical Chairs” On Tuesday, November 29, 2016, KDS participated in Giving Tuesday, a global day of giving aimed at inspiring people to collaborate in improving their local communities and give back in impactful ways to the charities and causes they support. The Giving Tuesday goal for KDS was to raise $10,000 to purchase 100 chairs for the high school band and choir classrooms. The new chairs will be used regularly by more than 700 students in grades 5-12 – one half of the KDS student body – and will replace a rag-tag collection of folding chairs that are no longer reliable. And thanks to the more than 90 friends who answered the call during the Giving Tuesday “Musical Chairs” campaign, the goal was met, and 100 new chairs have been purchased for the KDS Music Education Department. If you missed the opportunity to help with this terrific project, do not worry, we have lots of other ‘seats’ to fill! With more than 1,300 students on campus, there are always projects and programs in need of sponsorship. The complete renovation of the KDS baseball and softball fields began in June of 2015. Addressing critical drainage issues, both around and on the fields, was the top priority for this project. Outside of the fields, tons of sand rock and dirt were removed, making way for more than 700 feet of underground pipe and drain basins designed to carry the water around the fields, parking and seating areas. Strip drains were installed in the outfields, and grade work was done to correct low spots in the infields. Additional drains behind home plate insure standing water following a heavy rain will be at a minimum. 7 KDS Students and Staff Help Set World Record

During the months of April and May, KDS students, teachers and staff members were encouraged to write a card or letter to military personnel that would be delivered to NSDAR headquarters to aide in the attempt to set a GUINNESS WORLD RECORD for most letters to active service personnel at one time. KDS Director of Development Beth Cagle coordinated the efforts by collecting the names and addresses of local military personnel to provide to everyone so that they could choose one person to write to. She then collected the letters written to be delivered to Washington, DC, to be added to the thousands written by DAR members from across the country. On June 19th, during the National Defense Night Ceremony at Continental Congress, we learned that DAR now holds the GUINNESS WORLD RECORDSTM title for “most letters to military personnel collected in one month” with a total number of 100,904 cards and letters! 2007 KDS Alumnus Sam Hartline, Congratulations to all KDS students, faculty, and staff who contributed to the record! a Surface Warfare Officer in the U.S. Navy, was thrilled to receive letters from KDS students and faculty. KDS Donates Painting to NSDAR During the Gift Acceptance Ceremony at the 2016 Continental Congress, Kate Duncan Smith DAR School donated to NSDAR an original oil painting by Anne Rogers Minor, the National Society’s 11th President General. Mrs. Minor served in that position from 1920 to 1923. Her father-in-law, a well-known artist, encouraged her to take up painting as a career. Her paintings were on exhibition in many galleries in New York, Connecticut, and Massachusetts. She was a member of several societies of artists, and regarded painting as her profession. The artwork, an original oil painting of a harbor scene, hung in the Minor Practice Cottage on the KDS campus from the time of its dedication in 1935 until 2007 when the Home Economics teacher moved off KDS Executive Director Heather Green, KDS Board Chairman Peggy campus. Since that time, the painting has been housed Johnson, and NSDAR President General Lynn Young. in the KDS Administrative Office. The Minor Practice Cottage was built in 1935 with funds contributed by the Connecticut DAR and was named in honor of Mrs. Minor, a Connecticut Daughter. It served as the residence of the school’s home economics teacher and as a practice cottage for home economics students. The girls in the class would take turns staying in the home and practicing skills learned in the classroom such as cooking, cleaning, laundry, etc. When boys began taking home economics classes in the early 1980s, the cottage was no longer used for practice. Today it is used as a faculty residence. The painting now hangs in the Connecticut Board Room at NSDAR with other works of Mrs. Minor’s art.

Members of the National School Tour participated in an afternoon Community Service Scavenger Hunt on campus in honor of DAR’s National Day of Service. The ladies each brought a book about an influential person from their state to donate to one of the school libraries. They also planted seeds for students to grow in the Greenhouse, signed cards of appreciation for veterans, and raised awareness about breast cancer. On Monday evening the group traveled off the mountain for a “Casual Evening at the Cave”. Cathedral Caverns State Park served as a lovely backdrop for a southern meal under the stars, complete with chicken-n-dumplings and fried apple pies. Dulcimer music and cave tours added to the fun and fellowship. The traditional Dedication Program on Tuesday is always the highlight of the festivities, and this year was no exception with 23 state societies, groups, and organizations qualifying to dedicate. President General Ann Dillon presented the Dedication Day message, which featured her heartfelt words about the state of things in our country and why a place like KDS is so important. The program also featured musical performances by the Fourth Grade Choir and the High School Choir and all KDS students singing “DAR, Oh How We Love You” to a rousing response. There was even a surprise visit by the adorable KDS kindergartners who “sailed” through the program aboard the Nina, Pinta, and Santa Maria in honor of Christopher Columbus’ discovery of the New World. The program was followed by the famous Basket Luncheon, a perennial favorite of the DAR ladies and guests. Among the other highlights of this year’s KDS Dedication Day was the annual Craft Show which was held in the Doris Pike White Gymnasium, with more than 35 crafters offering their handmade goods. The proceeds from the Craft Show provide funds for supplies and materials for the KDS High School Art Department. The 92nd KDS DAR School Dedication Day was a truly special time for our “Gem of Gunter Mountain” and its students.

KDS Pre-K Expands to Serve More Children The 2016 school year marked the beginning of a new chapter for the Pre-K program at KDS. Not only did the program move into a newly renovated building, but another class was added, and now 36 students from the area are able to attend Pre-K! The Alabama State Board of Education expanded the Pre-K program to more than 800 classrooms statewide in 2016, and KDS Elementary benefitted from grants to fund the added class. Studies analyzing student achievement through the 6th grade have found that students who participate in a high quality Pre-K program consistently outperform their peers in reading and math. Alabama Department of Early Childhood Education also reports that Alabama First Class Pre-K alums have higher attendance rates, are less likely to require special education placement, and are less likely to repeat a grade than children that did not participate in the program. KDS is proud to work in partnership with the Marshall County Board of Education to make this program available to area children.
