Ise-Shima National Park Lies on the Shima Peninsula, Located in the Center of Mie Prefecture in Western Japan
A scared landscape featuring the historical site of Ise Jingu Grand Shrine, as well as a picturesque coastal route and bountiful seascape 12 Ise-Shima Ise-Shima National Park lies on the Shima Peninsula, located in the center of Mie prefecture in Western Japan. Ise-Shima National Park includes the municipalities of Ise, Toba, Shima, and Minami-Ise, occupying a vast area of National Park nearly 60,000 hectares. The park is broadly divided into two areas: the inland area which is home to Ise Jingu and its surrounding forests; and the coastal area which is characterized by an archipelagic landscape with intricate ria coasts. The interaction between people and nature is very profound in the region, and the essence of this relationship can be observed in the ancient tradition of ama, female diver, fishing, among other traditional cultural practices that have developed around Ise Jingu over the millennia. The wisdom to enjoy the bounties of nature in a sustainable manner is figured prominently in Ise Jinguʼs Shikinen Sengu, a ritual held once every 20 years whereby the shrine is rebuilt in its entirety. The region has a long history of providing seafood to the Imperial Court and Ise Jingu, and the Manyoshu (Japanʼs oldest poetry compilation) refers to the region as Miketsu Kuni or the "land of divine off erings". Thus, the region boasts a rich marine environment home to diverse aquatic life, including Japanese spiny lobster, abalones, turban shells, oysters, tunas, red sea breams, and various types of seaweed. The Kuroshio sea current has blessed the region with a warm climate, which has led to the development of Ise Jinguʼs lush forest and dense evergreen forests that cling to the foothills of the mountainous regions. -

Sep. 20, 2015 Geographical variations in morphological characters of the fluvial eight-barbel loach, Nagare-hotoke-dojo (Cobitidae: Nemacheilinae) Taiki Ito*, Kazuhiro Tanaka and Kazumi Hosoya Program in Environmental Management, Graduate School of Agriculture, Kinki University, 3327-204 Nakamachi, Nara 631-8505, Japan Abstract. The morphological and color variations of Lefua sp. 1 Nagare-hotoke-dojo individuals from 13 river systems were examined. Analysis of variance revealed highly significant variations in Lefua sp. 1 mor- phology and coloration among the 13 populations examined, across all 19 measurements and counts. The 13 populations of Lefua sp. 1 were classified into two major clusters (I and II) by using UPGMA cluster analy- sis. Cluster I comprised fish from the Maruyama, Yura, Muko, Mihara, Yoshino, Hidaka, Kumano, Yoshii, Chikusa, and Ibo river systems. Cluster II comprised fish from the Yoshida, Saita, and Sumoto river systems. Cluster I was further subdivided into sub-clusters: I-i (the Maruyama, Yura, Muko, Mihara, Yoshino, Hidaka, Kumano, and Yoshii river systems) and I-ii (the Chikusa and Ibo river systems). Principal component analysis revealed that populations within cluster II clearly possessed longer caudal peduncles, while populations within cluster I possessed a longer anterior body on average and a deeper body. Populations within sub-cluster I-ii possessed a higher average dorsal fin and a longer average dorsal fin base than those of populations within sub-cluster I-i. A strong correlation was noted between the PC3 score and population latitude (r = 0.621). Observations of body color patterns revealed that individuals from the Yoshino, Mihara, Sumoto, and Hidaka river systems had dark brown mottling on both sides and the dorsal regions of their bodies and many small dark brown spots on the dorsal and caudal fins, while those from the Yura, Muko, and Kumano river systems possessed neither. -

Recent Trends in Japanese Transportation Masahiro Sugiyama 1. Countermeasures for Natural Disasters 2004 was a year with an unusually high occurrence of natural disasters. There were 10 typhoons from June and the country was visited by heavy rains in the Niigata/Fukushima region and Fukui region in July. The disasters led to more than 230 dead or missing and almost 170,000 homes immersed in water. In October, the Chuetsu Earthquake with an intensity of 7 rocked the country, resulting in 40 deaths and the evacuation of over 100,000 people. In December, furthermore, the Sumatra-Andaman Earthquake and ensuing tsunami, led to approximately 100,000 dead or missing in 10 countries around the Indian Ocean. Many Japanese were among the victims. Faced with such a serious situation, the annual White Paper on Land, Infrastructure and Transport in Japan 2005 published in fiscal 2004 mentions the disaster recovery countermeasures and rebuilding support offered by the national government and the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport under the title of "Aiming to Build a Country Resilient to Disasters." This attempt was made to actively respond to social needs, and discussion includes actions taken against heavy rains and typhoons, earthquakes and tsunamis. SEMIANNUAL REPORT Fiscal Period Ended November 30, 2020 Prologis Park Tsukuba 2 Introduction We continue to have the strongest balance sheet in the J-REIT industry. With this low leverage and the size of our balance sheet, we continue to have significant additional investment capacity of approximately 180 billion yen. Finally, during the fiscal period, the demolition work of the building wreckage of Prologis Masahiro Sakashita Park Iwanuma 1 has proceeded as scheduled, and its redevelopment plan has been determined. For example, the construction of national highway networks, including expressways, has provided a major impe- tus in the rejuvenation of regional economies by encouraging plant locations near expressway interchanges. Additionally, it has helped enhance the quality and safety of national life by making broad-area medical services accessible to rural II areas and allowing broad rerouting to avoid highway disruption by natural disasters. An example includes the Sakai-Koga IC to Tsukuba Chuo IC segment of the Metropolitan Intercity Expressway Chapter 6 (Ken-O Expressway) opened on February 26, 2017, which resulted in roughly 90% connection of the 300 km of total roadway on the Expressway. This development is expected to attract more businesses and promote sightseeing activities. On the other hand, there are still missing links of expressways and arterial road networks in other parts of the country, which we plan to develop in a systematical manner. Tokugawa Yoshimune versus Tokugawa Muneharu: Rival Visions of Benevolent Rule by Tim Ervin Cooper III A dissertation submitted in partial satisfaction of the Requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in History in the Graduate Division of the University of California, Berkeley Committee in charge: Professor Mary Elizabeth Berry, Chair Professor Irwin Scheiner Professor Susan Matisoff Fall 2010 Abstract Tokugawa Yoshimune versus Tokugawa Muneharu: Rival Visions of Benevolent Rule by Tim Ervin Cooper III Doctor of Philosophy in History University of California, Berkeley Professor Mary Elizabeth Berry, Chair This dissertation examines the political rivalry between the eighth Tokugawa shogun, Yoshimune (1684‐1751, r. 1716‐45), and his cousin, the daimyo lord of Owari domain, Tokugawa Muneharu (1696‐1764, r. 1730‐39). For nearly a decade, Muneharu ruled Owari domain in a manner that directly contravened the policies and edicts of his cousin, the shogun. Muneharu ignored admonishments of his behavior, and he openly criticized the shogun’s Kyōhō era (1716‐36) reforms for the hardship that they brought people throughout Japan. Muneharu’s flamboyance and visibility transgressed traditional status boundaries between rulers and their subjects, and his lenient economic and social policies allowed commoners to enjoy the pleasures and profits of Nagoya entertainment districts that were expanding in response to the Owari lord’s personal fondness for the floating world. Ultimately, Muneharu’s fiscal extravagance and moral lenience—benevolent rule (jinsei), as he defined it—bankrupted domain coffers and led to his removal from office by Yoshimune. Although Muneharu’s challenge to Yoshimune’s political authority ended in failure, it nevertheless reveals the important role that competing notions of benevolence (jin) were coming to play in the rhetoric of Tokugawa rulership.
