Las competencias de tiro con arco de los Juegos Olímpicos de Tokio se realizaron finalmente luego de un año de espera. ¡Qué fabulosa demostración de coraje, disciplina y compromiso la de los 128 deportistas olímpicos y sus entrenadores! Hubo un poco de todo: excelentes puntajes en la clasificación, partidos no aptos para cardiacos, el debut exitoso del evento de equipos mixtos, victorias de los favoritos, las sorpresivas eliminaciones de los mejores ranqueados, viento, lluvia, jóvenes arqueros subiendo a lo más alto del podio, y veteranos ganando medallas. Así es el tiro con arco, y esta es la razón por la cual nuestra presencia en el programa olímpico está muy lejos de ser amenazada.
Estamos orgullosos de nuestros diecinueve deportistas: de los que ganaron medallas, de los que ganaron partidos, y de los que no pudieron lograrlo.
World Archery Americas felicita a los organizadores japoneses, los voluntarios, a World Archery, a los delegados técnicos y a los oficiales técnicos internacionales por contribuir al éxito total del tiro con arco en los Juegos.
Agosto nos presenta nuevos retos. Diez países representarán a América en el Campeonato Mundial de la Juventud en Polonia, solo unos días antes del inicio de los Juegos Paralímpicos – un evento en el estarán siete de nuestros países: Brasil, Canadá, Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica, México y los Estados Unidos. Les deseamos mucho éxito a todos nuestros participantes en estos dos eventos.
The archery competition of the Tokyo Olympic Games has finally happened after a one- year delay. What a fabulous demonstration of courage, discipline and commitment have the 128 Olympic archers and their coaches delivered! There was a bit of everything: great qualification round scores, heart-breaking matches, a magnificent debut of the

mixed team round, victories going to the favourites, surprises involving the early elimination of the top-seeds, wind, rain, young archers climbing the highest spot in the podium, and veterans winning medals. This is what archery is all about, and the reason why our presence in the Olympic program is far from being challenged.
We are very proud of our nineteen Olympic archers: the ones who won medals, those who won matches, and also those who did not.
World Archery Americas hereby congratulates the Japanese organizers, the volunteers, World Archery, the technical delegates, and the international technical officials for making the archery event of the Tokyo Olympic Games a complete success.
New challenges lie ahead in August. Ten countries will represent the Americas at the Youth World Championships in Poland, just a few days before the start of the Paralympic Games where we will have archers from 7 countries: Brazil, Canada, Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica, Mexico, and the United States. We wish all our international participants great results in these two events.

Los Juegos Olímpicos / The Olympic Games
El torneo de tiro con arco de los Juegos Olímpicos de Tokio se celebró del 23 al 31 de julio. Compitieron ciento veintiocho arqueros de cincuenta y un países. Además de los desafíos de orden técnico que se presentan en eventos de este nivel, Tokio implementó retos sin precedentes en cuando a la bioseguridad para proteger a todos los participantes de la pandemia del COVID-19.
Fue necesaria la imposición de restricciones y obligaciones con relación al uso de mascarillas en todo momento, a excepción de cuando los deportistas estaban sobre la línea de tiro. Se realizaron pruebas de COVID diariamente a todas las personas involucradas en los Juegos, y se prohibió la salida de la Villa Olímpica y de los hoteles. Finalmente se ganó la batalla contra el virus, pues no se reportó un solo caso positivo en el deporte de tiro con arco.

The archery competition of the Tokyo Olympic Games was held on July 23-31. One hundred and twenty-eight archers from fifty-one countries competed. In addition to the technical challenges an event of this level usually poses, Tokyo implemented unprecedented requirements regarding biosafety to protect all stakeholders against the COVID-19 pandemic.

Necessary measures were imposed to all participants regarding the use of face masks at all time but when straddling on the shooting line. COVID tests were administered daily to all involved, and movement out of the Olympic Village and hotels was strictly prohibited. The battle against the virus was victorious, as no positive cases were reported in the sport of Archery.
Ronda de Clasificación (23 de julio) / The Qualification Round (July 23)
En la ronda de clasificación se dispararon 72 flechas a 70 metros. Cada arquero fue asignado a una diana separada para reducir la distancia entre ellos en la línea de tiro.
La ronda de mujeres concluyó con las tres coreanas en los puestos de avanzada. An San (680), Jang Minhee (677) y la recordista mundial Kang Chae Young (675). A continuación se ubicaron tres deportistas de América: la mexicana Alejandra Valencia (674), Mackenzie Brown de Estados Unidos (668) y la subcampeona olímpica de Londres 2012 Aida Román (MEX – 665).
En el masculino también los coreanos dominaron con los puestos 1, 3 y 4 a través de los disparos de Kim Je Deok, Oh Jin Hyek y Kim Woojin. Solo el campeón mundial Brady Ellison de los Estados Unidos pudo romper la hegemonía coreana al colocarse segundo con 682 puntos. Crispín Duenas (CAN), Andrés Aguilar (CHI) y Luis Álvarez (MEX) también se ubicaron entre los veinte primeros.
The qualification round consisted of 72 arrows shot at 70 meters. Each archer was assigned to a different target to reduce distance between them on the shooting line.
The women’s round concluded with the three Korean archers in the top three spots: An San (680), Jang Minhee (677) and World Record holder Kang Chae Young (675). They

were followed by three archers from the Americas: Mexico’s Alejandra Valencia (674), US Mackenzie Brown (668) and the London 2012 silver medalist Aida Roman (MEX – 665).
The men’s event was also dominated by the Koreans in positions 1, 3 and 4 by means of Kim Je Deok, Oh Jin Hyek and Kim Woojin. Only the current World Champion, Brady Ellison from the United States, managed to break Korea’s dominance by placing second with 682 points. Crispin Duenas (CAN), Andres Aguilar (CHI) and Luis Alvarez (MEX) also placed themselves in the top 20.

Equipos Mixtos (24 de julio) / Mixed Teams (July 24th)
Veintinueve países presentaron la combinación de una mujer y un hombre y fueron, por tanto, incluidos en la lista de los equipos mixtos. Como se esperaba, Corea hizo gala de un impresionante desempeño para establecer el primer récord olímpico en este evento mixto con 1368 puntos. Los Estados Unidos (1350), Japón (1343) y México (1343) se ubicaron en los puestos 2, 3 y 4.
Solo los primeros 16 equipos avanzaron a la ronda de partidos. Los tres países restantes de nuestro continente se colocaron en los puestos 17 (Canadá), 20 (Brasil) y 26 (Colombia).

La ronda de 1/8 produjo un resultado inesperado con la eliminación del equipo de Estados Unidos (Ellison y Brown) ante el decimoquinto clasificado Indonesia. Los mexicanos lograron pasar las rondas de 1/8 y 1/4 con victorias sobre Alemania (6-2) y Gran Bretaña (6-0). Alejandra Valencia y Luis Álvarez se enfrentaron a Corea en la semifinal y cayeron 1 a 5. Por el otro lado del organigrama, Holanda superó reñidamente a Turquía en un desempate con resultado de 19 a 17.
En el partido por las medallas de bronce, los mexicanos se recuperaron de un pésimo segundo set, y se llevaron el tercer lugar. Corea derrotó a Holanda 5-3 y obtuvo la presea de oro en este evento en los Juegos Olímpicos.
Twenty-nine countries fielded the combination of a man and a woman and were therefore ranked for the mixed team event. As expected, Korea delivered an overwhelming performance to set the first Olympic record in this mixed event with a score of 1368 points. The United States (1350), Japan (1343) and Mexico 1336 followed in positions 2, 3 and 4.
Only the top sixteen teams made the cut. The remaining three teams from the Americas ranked 17th (Canada), 20th (Brazil) and 26th (Colombia).
The 1/8 round produced an unexpected result with the elimination of team USA (Ellison and Brown) versus 15th seed Indonesia. Mexico managed to clear the 1/8 and 1/4 rounds with victories over Germany (6-2) and Great Britain (6-0). Alejandra Valencia and Luis Alvarez faced Korea in the semifinals and lost the match 1 to 5 set points. On the other side of the brackets, the Netherlands edged Turkey 19-17 in a shoot-off.

In the Bronze match, the Mexicans pulled themselves together after a bad second set to win the match and the third place. Korea beat the Netherlands 5-3 to take the first mixed team gold medal at the Olympic Games.
Equipos Femeninos (25 de julio) / Women´s Teams (July 25th)
Doce equipos femeninos se clasificaron para competir en Tokio, dos de ellos en representación de América: México y los Estados Unidos. Los resultados de la ronda de ranqueo los colocaron en la segunda y tercera posición respectivamente, con grandes opciones de luchar por las medallas.
Ninguno de nuestros equipos femeninos necesitó competir en la ronda de 1/8, pues ambos avanzaron directamente a los cuartos de finales. México se enfrentó a Alemania, en una repetición del partido de 1/8 que le dio el boleto olímpico a las teutonas en el Campeonato Mundial del 2019. El equipo azteca integrado por Alejandra Valencia, Aida Román y Ana Paula Vázquez no disparó al nivel esperado y vieron desvanecerse sus esperanzas de una medalla con un resultado adverso de 2 a 6 puntos de set.
También decepcionante fue el resultado del partido entre Estados Unidos y el equipo del Comité Olímpico Ruso. Las americanas no pudieron anotarse un solo punto de set y fueron eliminadas de la competencia.
Como se esperaba, el equipo de Corea ganó su noveno título olímpico consecutivo en el equipo femenino desde Seúl 1988. Fueron escoltadas en el podio por las selecciones del Comité Olímpico Ruso y de Alemania.

Twelve women’s teams qualified to compete in Tokyo; two of these came from the Americas: Mexico and the United States. The results of the ranking round placed them in second and third positions, with wonderful opportunities to fight for medals.
Our two teams did not need to shoot the 1/8 round and went directly to the quarter final matches. Mexico faced the German team, in a remake of the 1/8 match at the 2019 World Championships in which the Europeans were victorious and secured a team position at the Olympics. The Mexican team formed by Alejandra Valencia, Aida Roman and Ana Paula Vázquez did not shoot as expected and saw their medal hopes vanish with an adverse result of 2-6 set points.

Also unexpected was the result of the match between the United States and the team representing the Russian Olympic Committee. The Americans were not able to score a single set point and were eliminated from the competition.
As expected, the Korean team won their ninth consecutive Olympic title in the women´s team event since Seoul 1988. They were escorted by the teams of the Russian Olympic Committee and Germany.
Equipos masculinos (26 de julio) / Men´s Teams (July 26th)
Solo un equipo masculino de América, Estados Unidos, logró clasificarse para Tokio. Al concluir la ronda de ranking, los norteamericanos aparecieron en la quinta posición y enfrentarían a Francia (ranqueados en el puesto 12) en la ronda de 1/8.
En el partido ante los franceses, Estados Unidos logró una fácil victoria con marcador de 6 puntos a 0. En los cuartos de finales se enfrentaron a Japón (cuarto clasificado), pero aquí no lograron la misma precisión que en el partido anterior, al alcanzar parciales de 52, 53 y 53 puntos, suficientes para marcar un solo punto de set. Estados Unidos había ganado plata en este evento en Londres 2012 y Río 2016, pero en Tokio fueron frenados por los locales en los cuartos de final.
Corea, clasificado en primer lugar, ganó sus tres partidos con puntajes fabulosos en sus sets, incluyendo un perfecto 60, para obtener la medalla de oro. Otros dos equipos asiáticos, Taipéi y Japón, alcanzaron la plata y el bronce respectivamente.

Only one team from the Americas, the United States, qualified for the men´s team event in Tokyo. At the end of the ranking round, they were 5th on the results list, and were paired up with the French squad (twelfth and last position).
The match against the French team rendered an easy 6-0 win for the Americans. In the quarter finals they took on fourth seed Japan, but their scores were not as good as in their previous match, delivering set scores of 52, 53, 53, which allowed them to win one set point only. The United States had won Silver in London 2012 and Rio 2016, but in Tokyo they were stopped by the locals in the quarter finals.
First seed Korea won their three matches with astonishing set scores, including a perfect 60, to win the gold medal. Two other Asian teams: Chinese Taipei and Japan, claimed Silver and Bronze.

Las rondas individuales de 1/32 y 1/16 se dispararon a ritmo de un partido tras otro durante tres días consecutivos. Marcus D´Almeida y Ane Marcelle Dos Santos (Brasil), Aida Román y Alejandra Valencia (México), Crispín Duenas (CAN), Jacob Wukie, Casey Kaufhold, Jennifer Mucino-Fernandez, Brady Ellison y Mackenzie Brown (USA) salieron victoriosos en la primera ronda, y luego seis de ellos vencieron en los partidos de 1/16 para asegurar posiciones en la ronda de 1/8: Marcus, Alejandra, Crispín, Brady, Jacob y Mackenzie.

The 1/32 and 1/16 individual rounds were shot match after match on three consecutive days. Marcus D´Almeida and Ane Marcelle Dos Santos (Brazil), Aida Roman and Alejandra Valencia (Mexico), Crispin Duenas (CAN), Jacob Wukie, Casey Kaufhold, Jennifer Mucino-Fernandez, Brady Ellison and Mackenzie Brown (USA) made it through the first elimination round. Six of them won their 1/16 matches to secure shooting positions in the 1/8 rounds: Marcus, Alejandra, Crispin, Brady, Jacob, and Mackenzie.
The 1/16 round witnessed the elimination of three of the six Koreans. Kim Je Deok was upset by Germany’s Florian Unruh, Jang Minhee was defeated by Japan’s Miki Nakamura, while Oh Jin Hyek collapsed to India’s Atanu Das.

Femenino Individual - 30 de julio / Women’s Individual - July 30th
Las dos arqueras de América ganaron sus partidos de 1/8 y avanzaron a los cuartos de finales, etapa en la cual se enfrentarían entre ellas. Este era un partido que prometía ser muy fuerte para ambas. Tres de los sets concluyeron con empate a 27 puntos (1 punto de set para cada una). Valencia ganó un parcial 30 a 27, mientras que Brown ganó el último 28 a 27. En la flecha de desempate, la estadounidense disparó primero y logró un 10. La

mexicana, por su parte, también colocó su flecha en el 10, pero un poco más lejos del centro. Mackenzie avanzó a las semifinales, donde enfrentaría a la coreana An San.

No había dudas de que la coreana era la principal contendiente a la medalla de oro, más aún cuando su compatriota Kang Chae Young había sido eliminada por Elena Osipova del Comité Olímpico Ruso en los cuartos de finales. Mackenzie Brown disparó de forma impresionante con parciales de 29, 28, 28, 30 y 28, mientras que su oponente asiática lograba 28, 30, 30, 27 y 28. Cinco puntos para cada deportista, haciendo necesaria una flecha de desempate. La coreana disparó primero, y su flecha cayó en el círculo del 10 interior. The two ladies from the Americas won their 1/8 matches and advanced to the quarter finals in which they faced each other. This match was expected to be a tough one between Alejandra Valencia y Mackenzie Brown. In three sets both archers shot the same score (27), which forced them to share the set points – one each. Valencia won a 30-27 set, while Brown took the last one 28-27. In the shoot-off, the American shot first, and scored a 10. The Mexican delivered a ten of her own, but it was further away from the center. Mackenzie Brown moved on to the semifinals, where she would face An San from Korea.
There was no doubt that the Korean was the strongest contender to the Gold medal, much more so when her teammate Kang Chae Young had been defeated by Elena Osipova of the Russian Olympic Committee in the quarter finals. Mackenzie Brown shot amazingly, 29, 28, 28, 30 and 28 versus An San’s 28, 30, 30, 27 and 28. 5 points for each archer at the end of the five sets. A shoot-off was needed. The Korean shot the first arrow, and it was a 10 in the X-ring. It was hard to shoot an arrow any closer to the center. The American delivered a nine and would need to settle for bronze.
An San would shoot for Gold versus Elena Osipova, who easily won her semifinal match over Italy’s Lucilla Boari (6-0).

Each match is a new competition, and predictions based on the results of a previous one are sometimes inaccurate and misleading. This was the case in the Bronze match. Brown’s performance against the Korean and Boari’s zero set points versus the Russian proved wrong signs to predict the outcome of the battle for the third place. The Italian took advantage of the American’s low scores in sets 3 and 4 to achieve a 7-1 victory. An outstanding fourth place for Mackenzie Brown.
The Gold match between Osipova and An San was a heart-breaker. The Russian led 5-3 after the fourth set, but the Korean shot 29 in the fifth one to force the match to a shoot- off. A ten by An San bestowed the crown on her, her third Gold medal at the Olympics.
Masculino Individual - 31 de julio / Men’s Individual - July 31st
Tres de los cuatro representantes de América en la ronda de 1/8 no pudieron ganar sus partidos, y se ubicaron en la novena posición. Esta ubicación fue para Crispín Duenas (CAN), Marcus D’Almeida (BRA) y Jacob Wukie (USA) el mejor lugar alcanzado por cada uno en sus participaciones individuales en Juegos Olímpicos.
El Campeón Mundial Brady Ellison (USA) sí llegó a los cuartos de finales. Allí se enfrentó al turco de 22 años Mete Gazoz. Brady disparó dos sets de 26 puntos, y estos bajos puntajes lo llevaron a perder el partido 3 a 7. Finalmente se ubicó séptimo, cuatro puestos más abajo que lo alcanzado en Río.

Dos veteranos y dos arqueros muy jóvenes llegaron a las semifinales. Los experimentados, con dos medallas olímpicas cada uno, eran Takaharu Furukawa (JPN) y Mauro Nespoli (ITA). Ellos se enfrentarían a Gazoz y a Tang Chih-Chun de Taipéi. Este último, campeón mundial de cadetes en el 2017, había sacado en cuartos de finales a Kim Woojin, el único coreano que quedaba en competencia.
Los dos europeos tuvieron un fabuloso desempeño en sus partidos, y se anclaron en la final por oro. Furukawa usó su experiencia previa en finales olímpicas para lograr victorias de 29 a 28 en el cuarto y quinto sets ante Tang Chih-Chun. Esto le valió para un triunfo de 7 a 3, y la medalla de Bronce.
El campo quedó listo para el partido por Oro. Nespoli, disparando el arco de más libraje en el torneo, comenzó con una fácil victoria 29 a 26 en el primer set. Three of our four 1/8 competitors were not able to win their matches and finally ranked in 9th position at the Olympics. This was, however, the best historical placing at the Olympic Games for Crispin Duenas (CAN), Marcus D’Almeida (BRA) and Jacob Wukie (USA).
World Champion Brady Ellison (USA) did advance to the quarter finals. He took on twenty-two-year-old Mete Gazoz from Turkey. Brady shot 26 points in two of his sets,

and these low scores caused him to lose the match 3-7. He finally ranked seventh, four positions lower than in Rio.
Two veterans and two very young archers moved on to the semifinals. The experienced ones, with two Olympic medals each, were Takaharu Furukawa (JPN) and Mauro Nespoli (ITA). They would face Gazoz and Taipei’s Tang Chih-Chun respectively. The young archer from Taipei, World Cadet Champion in 2017, had eliminated Kim Woojin, the only Korean left in competition, in the quarterfinals.
The two Europeans performed fabulously in their matches and secured spots in the Gold match. Furukawa used his previous Olympic finalist background to achieve 29-28 wins in sets 4 and 5 over Tang. This awarded him a 7-3 victory and the Bronze medal.
The field was ready for the Gold match. Nespoli, shooting the heaviest bow in the competition, started off with an easy 29-26 victory in the first set. The ever-smiling Gazoz leveled the match in the third set (3-3). The fourth set was a draw at 29 each. The winner of the fifth set would be the Olympic Champion. Nespoli fired an 8, a 10 and another 8. Gazoz needed just an 8 with his last arrow to become Turkey’s first gold medalist ever in archery at the Olympics. He showed why he deserved to be the Champion when his arrow hit the center of the target. Olympic medals to Turkey, Italy and Japan.

Segundo Clasificatorio a Juegos Centroamericanos y del Caribe / Second Qualifier for the Central American and Caribbean Games
La sede del Segundo Clasificatorio a los Juegos Centroamericanos y del Caribe del 2023 ha sido otorgada a Santo Domingo, República Dominicana. El evento tendrá lugar como parte de la Copa Merengue (WRE) del 5 al 11 de septiembre de 2022.
Como se anunció, el primer clasificatorio ha sido reprogramado, y se llevará a cabo del 14 al 20 de marzo en Salinas, Puerto Rico.

World Archery Americas ha presentado nuestra propuesta de Sistema de Clasificación para San Salvador 2023 a Centro Caribe Sports. Estaremos informando su estructura tan pronto sea aprobada.
The Second Qualifier for the 2023 Central American and Caribbean Games has been allocated to Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic. It will be held on the occasion of the Copa Merengue (WRE) on September 5-11, 2022.
As was announced, the first qualifier has been re-scheduled, and will now take place on March 14-20 in Salinas, Puerto Rico.
The Qualification System for San Salvador 2023 has been submitted to Centro Caribe Sports for their approval.
