Final Olympic Qualification Tournament in Ogden With one event, Ogden, USA, hosted three competitions from 18-24 June 2012: the Stage 3, the Final Team Olympic Qualification (21 June) and the Final Individual Olympic Qualification tournaments (22 June).

There were the last three team Olympic spots (three individual places for the three team members) per gender up for grab. Countries that had not yet qualified a full team at the Turin 2011 World Championships could enter the FQT for teams that took place on Thursday, 21 June.

It was a true battle race: on the men's side, a total of 32 men’s team competed for three places; on the female side, there were 28 teams competing for three spots as well. On the men’s side India, Japan and Chinese Taipei. On the women’s side the USA, Mexico and Japan!

The Final Individual Qualification Tournament on Friday, 22 June allocated the very last individual places. It was open to all countries that had not yet obtained a quota place per gender through the other qualification events.

If any of the countries that won a team quota in Ogden (see above) had already obtained an individual quota place before, this place was added to the list of available places for the Final Individual Qualification Tournament. Therefore, there were finally seven spots for the men and eight for the women that were contested by 80 men (from 35 countries) and 50 women (from 25 countries).

Here are the athletes that won a place for their countries/NOCs. The NOCs still need to approve the places and select the athletes they want.

USA's Olympic Team USA Archery has nominated six athletes to the U.S. Olympic Team on Sunday, 3 June 2012, following a gruelling Olympic Trials process that took place over a ten-month period and consisted of three separate events. Miranda LEEK, , Jennifer NICHOLS, Brady ELLISON, and Jacob WUKIE are all London-bound, pending approval of their nominations by the U.S. Olympic Committee.

The process began in September at Texas A&M University, took the top sixteen athletes to the U.S. Olympic Training Center in Chula Vista, CA in April, and finished in Colorado Springs, the home of USA Archery and the U.S. Olympic Committee.

LEEK, who has enjoyed a standout 2012 season, will make her first trip to the Olympic Games in July after leading Sunday's point totals with 126.75, losing just two matches in the day's round robins, and carrying the field's second highest three arrow average. Her fellow nominees are both veterans: four-time Olympian LORIG, who was the Closing Ceremony flag bearer at the 2008 Olympic Games in , and two-time Olympian NICHOLS, who made her Olympic debut in Athens.

June 2012 World Archery Newsletter Page 5

ELLISON, who led the men's field since the first Trials event in September, will compete in his second Olympic Games in London, having made his debut in Beijing. Since 2008, ELLISON has become the first archer ever to win three consecutive World Cup stages, has held the number one world ranking since 2011, and is considered a gold medal contender. Shooting for his first Olympic Team will be KAMINSKI, who has been a regular on the World Cup circuit since 2010, holding onto the second spot on the men's team since September as well. WUKIE, who clinched his spot on the team by just 1.75 points, was the Olympic Team alternate for Beijing and has significant international experience to his credit.

The men's team alternate is Joe FANCHIN, and the women's team alternate is Heather KOEHL. Both athletes also boast a wealth of international competitive experience, and will train closely with the Olympic Team nominees over the coming weeks in the event that they are called to London.

Complete results are available at http://www.teamusa.org. All nominations are subject to the approval of the U.S. Olympic Committee. Miranda LEEK and Brady ELLISON

Italy's Paralympic Flag Bearer The Italian Paralympic Committee chose the archer Oscar DE PELLEGRIN as flag bearer of the Italian delegation at the London 2012 Paralympic Games.

Born in Belluno, in 1963, Oscar DE PELLEGRIN will make his sixth Paralympic appearance in London. In the five previous editions he competed in shooting and archery, winning a total of five medals.

In shooting, DE PELLEGRIN won a gold medal in 1992 and a bronze in 1996.

In archery, he won a team gold medal and an individual bronze in 2000, and one additional bronze medal in Beijing 2008. He won 58 national titles, and broke 11 national records and two world records.

Following his Paralympic title in 2000, DE PELLEGRIN received the official title of "Commendatore" (Knight Commander) of the Republic of Italy and the "Collare d’oro" (Golden Collar) from the Italian National Olympic Committee (CONI).

Sportsmanship

Trans Tasman Tournament During the Trans Tasman team biennial youth tournament (New Zealand v Australia) a great example of sportsmanship was displayed by two young archers, one from each country. During the FITA Event Marcus BARCLAY (NZL) was calling and two Australians were scoring. At the end of the round BARCLAY signed the score card for 1358. The medal presentation indicated the first place in the compound cadet men’s division went to Matt TONOWICZ (AUS) with the winning total of 1361.

Later that evening the chief judge pointed out to BARCLAY that there had been a mistake in the scoring and in fact he had the highest score of 1362. BARCLAY was pleased with the actual score because it was a personal best for him but made no attempt to complain or be outwardly upset at not winning gold. He knew the mistake was not deliberate by his Australian opponents and it was his responsibility to check the score before signing it.

June 2012 World Archery Newsletter Page 6

However, the word must have got around because shortly after TONOWICZ came over to BARCLAY and gave him the gold medal because, as he said, "Marcus had shot the highest score". An outstanding, sporting decision made by this young Australian archer and we should all be very proud that the future of archery is in such good hands.

Past Events

Questionnaire We encourage all archers and officials who took part in the World Cup Stage 3 in Ogden to fill in the Satisfaction Survey in order to keep improving our events. The questionnaire is available online at http://www.archery.org/Questionnaire/.

World Cup Stage 3 in Ogden The Ogden World Cup Stage 3 from 18-24 June 2012 gathered an impressive participation as a total of 383 athletes from 66 countries went to the USA. The participants aimed to qualify for the World Cup Final in Tokyo, and also for the 2012 Olympic Games, as Ogden hosted the Final Olympic Qualification Tournament for teams and individuals.

In compound, Reo WILDE (USA/4) (photo) made in history in Ogden on 23 June 2012. He not only won the three stages of the Archery World Cup 2012, but he is on a 4-win streak counting the last leg in in 2011. He is also the first archers to have won in the four cities that hosted the most World Cups (Ogden, Shanghai, Antalya and Porec). In Ogden however, it was not that easy in the final against Peter ELZINGA (NED/10): victory 145-144. For 3rd place, the No. 3 seeded archer Pierre Julien DELOCHE (FRA) easily defeated the reigning world champion and No. 1 seed Christopher PERKINS (CAN) by 146-139.

On the female side, the teammates Christie COLIN (USA/8) v Jamie VAN NATTA (USA/6) ended up in a shoot-off to decide on the winner, 140-140. VAN NATTA's tie-break arrow was an 8. Her timing was a little long and could have caused the low arrow. COLIN shot a 9 to win. Kristina BERGER (GER/5) won her 3rd place match 147-140 over Laura LONGO (ITA/7).

The top seeded male team USA had a clear advantage entering the final against the No. 3 seed Canada. Indeed, the two teams had met three times before in gold medal matches at the World Cup, and USA had won all three matches. In Ogden, the Canadians could never recover from a bad start, and despite a perfect last end, USA only needed a hit at their last arrow to win. Braden GELLENTHIEN clinched the match with a 10, securing a victory for USA 233-224. Mexico (4) upset El Salvador (2) 222-216 for 3rd place.

On the female side, the Americans Erika ANSCHUTZ, Christie COLIN and Jamie VAN NATTA, No. 1 seed in Ogden and reigning world champions, won the first two World Cup team event of the season in Shanghai and Antalya. Looking for a hat-trick this season, they faced the Russians (3), who could count on the experienced and talented Albina LOGINOVA, 2009 and 2011 world champion and 2010 World Cup winner. The two teams were tied at 169 each before the final end, and Russia took a 1-point lead with three arrows remaining. While USA shot three low 9s to end the match, Russia scored 10-9 and needed an 8 to win. LOGINOVA did not shake and clinched victory with a 9 (225-223). The match for 3rd place was between Venezuela (5) and Italy (2) and ended up with a victory for the lowest seeded South Americans, 228-225.

To get to the compound mixed team final match the No. 9 seeded pair from the upset the top seed USA in quarterfinal. Seeded No. 11, Russia defeated the No. 3 (Italy) and No. 2 (Mexico) in the previous rounds. The Dutch Irina MARKOVIC/Peter ELZINGA and the Russians Albina LOGINOVA/Dmitry KOZHIN could not make a decision and ended up in a shoot-off at 152- 152. ELZINGA's tie-break arrow was a 9 just high and MARKOVIC's a spider (X10), but their opponents shot two X10s for the win (20-19). For 3rd place, the pair Kristina BERGER/Paul TITSCHER (GER/5) got the upper hand of Linda OCHOA/Julio Ricardo FIERRO (MEX/2), 155-150.

June 2012 World Archery Newsletter Page 8

On Sunday, 24 June 2012, Luis ALVAREZ (MEX) was impressive in the recurve men's final of the Ogden World Cup. His victory offered him a trip to the World Cup Final in Tokyo at just 21 years old. Kristina TIMOFEEVA (RUS) did even better. At 19 years old, she won the individual and team categories on the women's side.

Ranked No. 92 in the world ALVAREZ is a relative new comer to the international scene. Seeded No. 12, the Mexican faced Laurence GODFREY (GBR), No. 16 in the world and No. 6 seed. Neither of them had ever won an individual gold medal at a World Cup event. In this match, ALVAREZ never let GODFREY in. The Briton just missed out by one point in each set to lose 6-0. ALVAREZ and GODFREY will both be heading off to the World Cup Final in September. In a real nail biting 3rd place match between Gael PREVOST (FRA/16) and Tarundeep RAI (IND/34), the Frenchman shooting the cross out to win 6-5 was a fitting end to a great match in World Cup history!

In recurve women, both Jennifer NICHOLS (USA/9) and Kristina TIMOFEEVA (RUS/27) (photo) were looking for their first World Cup victory. TIMOFEEVA recently moved to the adult ranks from the junior division where she was the world indoor champion earlier in 2012. NICHOLS has considerably more experience having competed internationally since 2003 and a member of the US team that won the FQT earlier in the week. TIMOFEEVA led 4-0 after two sets, and NICHOLS came back at 4-2 after three. The American trying to avoid a loss shot a 9-9- 9, but TIMOFEEVA had a great set with 10-10-9 to clinch victory 6-2. Alejandra VALENCIA (MEX/4) never let up and thumped a 6-0 win over Magali FOULON (ESP/74), who had a surprise appearance in the 3rd place match.

The recurve men's team final between (No. 1) and India (7) was a great match start to finish with no team pulling ahead. It got really windy on the last end with both teams dropping points to end on a tie (213-213), but USA shooting a great 28 to win in the shoot-off against India's 27. In the 3rd place match, the British boys did not even have to shoot their last arrow to win 223-210 over the Italians.

The best seeded compound women's teams, Mexico (1) and Russia (2) were against each other for victory. The Mexicans had been good all week with a fantastic performance to win their Olympic team place. In the Ogden World Cup final match they never really seemed to get started and Russia just steamed ahead, 204-195. For 3rd place, USA (4) shot a great match to come back from such a bad start (44-54 in the first end). That miss with Miranda LEEK's first shot would have normally ended the match before it started, but with great shooting the American ladies turned it around to claim a great bronze medal win, 206-204, over Germany (6).

In the mixed team event, the No. 3 seeded pair USA just smashed the top seeded team Russia by 13 points (150-137). The four-time Olympian Jennifer NICHOLS—heading off her fifth Olympic Games in London—and No. 1 ranked archer in the world Brady ELLISON pulled ahead on the first end and never looked back at their opponents Ksenia PEROVA and Bato TSYNGUEV. That was a world class show, great for this home crowd to watch. In the 3rd place match, the No. 7 double, and Camilo MAYR from Germany, beat the No. 4 seeded team, Hideki KIKUCHI and Kaori KAWANAKA of Japan, after a close match, 145-144.

Pan American Championships Chilean archer Denisse VAN LAMOEN won the recurve women's individual gold medal in the Pan American Championships held in El Salvador from 20-26 May 2012. The Compound Match Round was used as the Continental Qualifier for the to be held in , Colombia in 2013, for both men and women.

VAN LAMOEN's arrow in the ten-ring gave her the continental title. She had ranked first in the FITA Round with a score of 1333 points. Leidys BRITO (VEN) defeated Ulsan 2009 World Championships bronze medallist Natalia SANCHEZ (COL) 7-3 to win the third place for her country.

June 2012 World Archery Newsletter Page 9

On the recurve men’s side, Mexican junior Ernesto BOARDMAN took the gold as he beat Colombia’s Andres PILA 7-3 in the final match. PILA had won an Olympic spot for his country in the Continental Qualifier held in April in Medellin. Dan SCHULLER (USA) edged Hector SANSORES (MEX) 6-4 to win the bronze.

The Compound Match Round was used as the Continental Qualifier for the World Games in Cali, Colombia in 2013. Several world class compound archers were present to fight for the six spots that were up for grabs (three women and three men). El Salvador won two positions in the men’s competition as Roberto HERNANDEZ and local idol Jorge JIMENEZ (photo) ranked first and second. The third spot went to Colombia by means of Francisco ROJAS who overwhelmed Mexico’s Hafid JAIME 144-138 in the bronze match. The biggest surprise was that the strong team from the USA headed by World Cup winner Rodger WILLETT Jr. did not win a spot.

The compound ladies round was dominated by Venezuela’s Ana MENDOZA who defeated Sarah LANCE (USA) 142-135 for the gold. A strong battle was waged by the bronze match contenders. Alejandra USQUIANO (COL) shot a score that was one point higher than her Mexican opponent Stephanie SALINAS (143-142) and secured the second spot of the day for her country. As Colombia will be the host country, they will now have two representatives in each compound category at the World Games, one each for being the host and the second ones due to their performance in the Continental Qualifier.

The six team's gold medals were won by five different countries. Only Mexico managed to win two titles: the compound mixed round followed by El Salvador and the USA, and the compound women’s team sharing the podium with Venezuela (second) and the USA (third). Venezuela was first in the recurve mixed round where Chile and Colombia were second and third. The United States, Mexico and Colombia topped the recurve men’s team competition, while Colombia, the USA and Mexico led the recurve women’s event. El Salvador defeated Mexico 30-29 in a shoot-off for gold in the compound men’s team contest to leave top ranked USA with the bronze medal.

The summary of quota places for the World Games 2013 in Cali can be found on http://www.worldarchery.org, section Other Events > 2013 > Cali – World Games.

European Grand Prix The 1st leg of the European Grand Prix was held in Nicosia, Cyprus on 4-9 June 2012. All information and results can be found on http://www.nicosiagp2012.com.cy. The second leg will take place in , Bulgaria on 9-14 July 2012.

Namibia National Championships The 5th Namibian National Championships were held at the SKW Archery Range in Windhoek from 15-17 June 2012, with the generous support from Maerua Superspar. This year the competition was judged by a World Archery Continental Judge, Mike WISH from Grahamstown, .

Strong gusty winds and dust made shooting quite difficult at times, but as the championship was outdoor the archers have been able to master these conditions. It is quite evident, that the standard of archery is steadily improving in Namibia, given that several records were broken in spite of the windy conditions.

To the delight of the Archery Association of Namibia, several entries were also received in the recurve division, and here some noteworthy records have also been established. The is currently the only bow which is accepted for Olympic participation.

June 2012 World Archery Newsletter Page 10

Johan GROBLER (SKW Archers) achieved new record scores over all the distances for the men's division Cub boy under 15. Xander REDDIG (Northern Archery Club) likewise set best marks over all the distances, and Cf BRANDT, in the under 13 age group, increased the scores over all the distances shot.

The FITA Round was shot on Saturday. It involved 144 arrows and four different distances. This competition was used as a run up to the Championship which was decided on Sunday. After long windy and dusty hours of individual elimination matches, the archery champions for 2012 were awarded their medals and trophies. Shooting in so-called "sudden death" individual elimination matches based on a seeding list, usually is quite a mental game, and this was then also reflected in the results.

A special guest on Sunday was Ms Joan SMIT, representing the Namibia National Olympic Committee. During the medal ceremony, she spoke about the future of archery and encouraged all archers, but especially the recurve archers to practice hard and continuously with international goals and possibly qualification for future Olympic participation always on their minds.

The Archery Association of Namibia would like to thank Mareua Superspar, Maerua Lifestyle Centre, Centaurus Road, Windhoek for their generous sponsorship and financial support. Also the support of the Namibia National Olympic Committee is sincerely appreciated.

More information and the list of all winners can be found on http://www.worldarchery.org, section News > News from Federations > 28 June 2012.

OS Technical Course in Chad The first archery technical course for coaches was held in N’Djamena, Chad from 7-16 June 2012, under the expertise of Carlos FREITAS (POR) and Paul ZINSOU (BEN).

The 9-day programme was divided into practical and theoretical sessions. The main topics were pedagogic case studies, basic skills and shooting analysis. The course took place in very difficult conditions for the two experts, mainly due to the extreme heat and the lack of archery equipment.

World Archery experts Paul ZINSOU and Carlos FREITAS said "we were able to overcome these difficulties and keep the participants interested and participative which gave us great satisfaction".

Besides the usual archery course contents, the experts taught the participants how to create an email account, how to manufacture basic archery equipment (target butts, sights, finger tabs, arm guards, etc.) with local material. Out of 16 candidates, 15 concluded the course and became certified coaches.

Chad will now have the possibility to open archery centres and clubs both in the capital, N'Djamena and in several other provinces.

National Structure Programme in Argentina From the 21 May to 16 June 2012, the Archery Federation of Argentina (FATARCO) organised the first part of the above mentioned programme. The nominated expert for this programme was Lionel TORRES (FRA), a very well know archer who was on the international scene from 1993 to 2002.

Based on the programme approved by Olympic Solidarity, Lionel TORRES worked with the coaches and their archers of four Argentinian regions: Buenos Aires, Bahia Blanca, Mendoza and Santa Fe. The sessions were divided into theoretical and practical which covered the following areas:  The fundamental techniques  The archery structure in France  Bow tuning  Training programme  Competition planning  Shooting strategy

During the practical sessions with the archers, the first exercise was to correct their posture. This allowed the enhancement of their body to better stand the weight of the equipment and also to improve their shooting. This also enabled them to improve their posture and in order to preserve the body energy so that they would not get tired to fast during the practical sessions. The archers immediately took into consideration the posture corrections and their performance results improved immediately.

June 2012 World Archery Newsletter Page 12

The expert added that the work accomplished by the coaches is outstanding and brilliant. The posture correction given to the archers has been a great success. The expert also mentioned that the beginners’ to advanced archers have a good technical level. The archery basics taught are very efficient. The Argentinian educational programme is very productive and strong. In the near future there will be results to confirm the progress made by the coaches and archers, hopefully, before the expert's next trip planned from 7 October to 4 November 2012.

The programme was well understood by the participants. The archery family in Argentina was very warm and friendly. The expert also mentioned that the working conditions and atmosphere were excellent.

Master Plan Preparation to 2016 Olympic Games Fifteen bows and fifteen dozens of arrows have been donated to the Brazilian Archery Confederation to contribute to their Master Plan Rio 2016 (a preparation plan for the 2016 Olympic Games to be held in Rio de Janeiro and supervised and coordinated by Peter NIEUWENHUIS, an expert in top performance programmes). This plan is supported by World Archery, the Brazilian Olympic Committee (BOC) and the Olympic Solidarity.

A level 3 coaching course was held from 30 May to 6 June 2012 in the Archery Centre of Marica (Rio de Janeiro) which was conducted by the World Archery Events Director, Mr Juan Carlos HOLGADO. Most of the participants, more than 20 coaches from all over Brazil, who previously attended a level 1 and 2 of coaching clinic attended this level 3 course. It was nice not only to see how these coaches improved in their coaches skills, but also seeing how this knowledge has currently improved the level of Brazilian archers in the different regions where these coaches are working.

Atmosphere among the coaches is very good. Some of them have started to collaborate with the Head Coach of the Brazilian team, the Korean coach LIM, who has been contracted in 2010 and is working in Brazil since then.

People responsible for the BOC programmes in Brazil came to visit the course. Three more seminars are expected to be held next year to establish a Coaches Education system and a development coaching structure in Brazil. All this has the goal to strongly support the Master Plan and its objectives for 2016.

The Master Plan established in 2010 has already showed positives results and has been used by the BOC as an example to other Sport Federations in Brazil to show how to prepare and develop a sport for the Games in 2016.

Passing of Bhutanese Federation's Secretary General World Archery has been informed that the Secretary General of the Bhutanese Archery Federation (BAF), Mr Pema NAMGYEL, 42, has passed away in a tragic accident on 16 June 2012. He was by profession a civil engineer employed by the Government and was the father of three children aged 3, 9 and 11.

He had served BAF for a total of five years, first as the Assistant General Secretary, and then as the General Secretary since 2010. He came from a small village in Eastern Bhutan known as Gomdar which is in the Samdrup Dzongkhar district.

He was famous in Bhutan for being one of the top archers shooting at the traditional distance of 145m with compound bows, and had been a team member in several national championships' winning teams (traditional Bhutanese archery being a team sport).

Pema NAMGYEL brought his passion for archery in his capacity as BAF General Secretary and worked very hard and diligently to improve the conditions for Olympic archery in Bhutan. He will be missed dearly.

The World Archery family sends its sincere condolences to Pema NAMGYEL's family and friends, and to the Bhutanese Archery Federation.

Archery Australia's Head Coach Archery Australia is pleased to advise that James PARK, the Archery Australia Head Coach, has been awarded a PhD in Mechanical Engineering by Monash University in Melbourne, Australia. His PhD work was dedicated to arrow dynamics.

His study covered the behaviour of arrows during the bow’s power stroke and in free flight. He placed particular emphasis on compound bows, but much of the work is also directly applicable to recurve bows.

USA's National Head Coach The United States Olympic Committee (USOC) and the Easton Foundations signed an agreement to build a new 40,000 square foot state-of-the-art archery field house at the U.S. Olympic Training Center (OTC) in Chula Vista. The indoor facility will provide athletes with element-free training at the official Olympic distance of 70 metres. Construction is slated to begin this fall.

Thursday, 14 June 2012 was an exciting day of news for USA Archery: world-renowned archery coach KiSik LEE (photo) also renewed his own contract with the organisation, committing to continue as U.S. National Head Coach for another four years. LEE, who has been with the U.S. programme since 2006, has overseen the development of the organisation's high performance and coach development programming.

The resident programme at the OTC has already produced the world's top-ranked men's archery team and individual male archer (Brady ELLISON) heading into the 2012 Olympic Games. The new venue in Chula Vista will provide athletes a space to fine-tune their equipment and give them access to a premier training facility tailored specifically to the needs of their sport. The agreement will also bring additional on-site housing to the training centre.

SANAA Books on iPad The South African National Archery Association (SANAA) has made two new free books available on the Apple iBookstore for iPad users. The first book is their pathway programme and the second is Book 3 of the World Archery Rules. The new iBooks follow on the successful release of the SANAA Long Term Development Programme on the iBookstore, based on the World Archery Feathers and Arrows.

According to Dr Selwyn MOSKOVITZ, President of SANAA, the route of the iPad was taken because of the features that it offers; and the observation, that more often than not, the iPad will accompany the archer to the range.

The rule book was used verbatim, ensuring conformity with the printed version which is available on the World Archery website. In designing the version of the rulebook for the iPad, consideration was taken for those who are visually impaired, with features such as allowing the user to use larger fonts without any loss of quality. This feature is significant as it allows judges who normally wear spectacles to reduce their dependency. Easy reference can be made to all chapters of the rule books, and the search and locate functions are lightning fast.

Book 3 of the World Archery rules is available at http://itunes.apple.com/us/book/world-archery- rules-book-3/id534901805?ls=1 and the pathway programme at http://itunes.apple.com/us/book/give-it-a-go/id533100793?ls=1.

Alison WILLIAMSON awarded an MBE British archer Alison WILLIAMSON has been recognised in Queen Elizabeth II's Birthday honours list. WILLIAMSON, who will be appearing at a record equalling sixth Olympic Games next month, has been appointed an MBE—a Member of the British Empire—for her services to archery. She said she felt 'overwhelmed' by the recognition, describing the honour as "another fantastic achievement in an incredible year."

An Olympic bronze medal winner at Athens 2004, WILLIAMSON, 40, will become only the third British athlete in history to have competed at six consecutive Olympics, following in the footsteps of javelin thrower and fencer Bill HOSKYNS. She shot her first arrow at only six years old at her family home and has been a member of the Long Mynd Archers in for 34 years.

As well as winning a bronze medal, she is a former world number one and has many other titles to her name. She has helped mentor up and coming archers and when not competing is often visiting local schools and clubs to demonstrate her skills and pass on her wealth of knowledge and experience.

Eligibility World Archery has confirmed to the Archery Federation (Féderation Royale Belge de Tir à l'Arc) the eligibility of the athlete Rick MARTENS to compete for Belgium. Mr MARTENS, born as a Dutch citizen, is eligible to compete for Belgium since the Archery Association of the Netherlands (NHB) has authorised him to do so.

This eligibility is only valid for competitions under World Archery eligibility criteria and would not be valid for Olympic Games or other multisport event where other eligibility criteria exist.

AISTS Athlete Scholarship AISTS is pleased to announce the establishment of a new scholarship to study the AISTS Master of Advanced Studies in Sports Administration and Technology (MSA) in Lausanne, the Olympic Capital and World cluster of sport governing organisations. The AISTS Athlete Scholarship, as it will be called, is exclusively available for elite athletes.

The AISTS MSA, a one year multi-disciplinary master degree in sports management, co-signed by the EPFL, Universities of Lausanne and Geneva as well as the IDHEAP is attended each year by professionals from all over the world and from different academic and professional backgrounds. By establishing this new scholarship opportunity, AISTS aims to support elite athletes who wish to transfer their sporting success into a career in sports management.

The AISTS MSA has welcomed Olympic medallist in previous editions of the programme. "Athletes’ experience of sport is extremely valuable and unique, as it touches on different areas of the sports world (medical in regards to training and nutrition, technology for the gear they use in their sport, law for contracts etc.), all areas that are taught on our programme. Welcoming athletes to our programme represents a benefit for all participants," says Dr STRICKER, AISTS Executive Director.

June 2012 World Archery Newsletter Page 17

Athletes spend most of their time on training and performance preparation, often leaving little opportunity for full time employment. Financial support for further studies is therefore necessary in many cases. The AISTS will award two Athlete Scholarships, each representing a value of CHF 12,800 and to be used towards the 2013 AISTS MSA course fee of CHF 25,600.

To be considered for the Scholarship, candidates must apply by 15 August 2012. To find out more about the scholarship and application procedures, please visit www.aists.org/athletescholarship or contact [email protected], phone +41 21 693 8593.

Rules

Important Update World Archery informs that the rule on the instinctive bow has been modified with immediate effect. The way the rule was written prevented many existing bows that were intended to be used in events from being no longer allowed or it was left to the interpretation of the judge on how to measure the laminations.

This final text below should solve the issue and make it easier for athletes and judges to determine if the bow is allowed or not.

The new text is: A bow of any type, which complies with the common meaning of the word bow as used in target archery, consisting of a handle (grip), riser (no shoot-through type) and two flexible limbs each ending in a tip with a string nock. The riser is produced of a natural or resin based material (e.g. wood, bamboo, horn, cloth, fibreglass, and a portion of the riser may include carbon/graphite or metal). The riser must be of laminated construction or one piece of wood. The bow may be of a take-down type and may incorporate factory installed metal fittings in the riser for limb attachment, sight mount inserts, cushion plunger insert and stabiliser bushings only. The bow may include a single adjustable limb for tiller adjustment only, but may not have adjustable limb pockets for bow weight adjustment. The riser may include multiple natural or synthetic laminates for use in limb/pocket protection or for structural use within the riser. The riser laminations must contain some wood or bamboo. For non-takedown bows, limb laminates of any material that fade into the riser section are permitted. The bow is braced for use by a single string attached directly between the two stringnocks, and in operation is held in one hand by its handle (grip) while the fingers of the other hand draw and release the string.

The bow as described above shall be bare, except for a simple plastic industry standard glued arrow rest (see Article 22.4.3 of Rule Book 4) and free from protrusions, sights or sight marks, marks or blemishes or laminated pieces (within the bow window area).
