Universiades June 2012 Archery as Compulsory Sport UNIVERSIADES World Archery is truly delighted: at its recent meeting in Kazan, Archery Compulsory Sport Russia the Executive Committee of the International University NEW MEDIA Sport Federation (FISU) named archery in the compulsory sports 14,500 Fans on Facebook programme of the Summer Universiades as of 2019. LONDON 2012 Archery TV and YouTube This is the results of a truly great relationship between World Olympic Torch Relay Final Olympic Qualification Archery and FISU. The first Archery University Games, an event USA's Olympic Team organised in cooperation with FISU, to show the interest of SPORTMANSHIP University Sport in archery, were organised in 1993 and the Trans Tasman Tournament current World Archery Secretary General Tom DIELEN was head of CLEAN SPORT the organisation. The 1st World Archery University Championships Therapeutic Use Exemptions started in 1996 in France under the leadership of the current FISU Nutritional Supplements President Claude-Louis GALLIEN and were held bi-annually until FUTURE EVENTS now. The last edition will be held in 2016 since a sport that is part Run Archery in Russia of the compulsory programme cannot have championships as well. PAST EVENTS Events Questionnaire Archery has also already been successfully part of Universiades World Cup Stage 3 in Ogden four times. Archery has been at the Universiades in 2003, 2005, Pan American Championships European Grand Prix 2009 and 2011 with some of its biggest stars. None the less than Namibia Nationals the Olympic champions Viktor RUBAN (UKR) and PARK Sung- DEVELOPEMENT Hyung (KOR) (photo) have competed at Universiades. RUBAN won Calendar 2012 it in 2009 and PARK in 2003. Several other great names have OS Technical Course competed at the Universiades such as double team Olympic National Structure Programme champion and true star of archery IM Dong-Hyun (KOR), as well as Master Plan 2016 Rio world champions such as Braden GELLENTHIEN (USA), Sergio COACHING PAGNI (ITA) and Albina LOGINOVA (RUS). We would like to thank the FISU Executive Committee for their support. This will help the development of archery in all aspects. I would like to thank the continuous efforts of our current President Prof Dr Ugur ERDENER, the Honorary President Mr James L. EASTON and our Event Director Mr Juan Carlos HOLGADO who is also acting as the World University Championships FISU Archery Technical Committee Chair, a position I held before 4-7 July 2012 him. He competed at the World Archery University Games in 1993. I also would like to thank our board for their strong support in this endeavour and all the organisers and their volunteers who have been working relentlessly at the World Archery University Championships. This success is theirs!" The next World Archery University Championships are coming real soon. They will take place in Cordoba, Spain on 4-7 July 2012. Archery will be part of the Universiades in 2015 in Korea and in Olympic Games 2017 in Chinese Taipei before being a compulsory part in 2019. 27 July-12 August 2012 New Media Facebook reaches 15,000 Fans World Archery is very grateful to have reached 15,000 "likes" on 29 June 2012! There will be 10 live feeds from London 2012, running from 09:00 to 23:00 (London time) (on some days, these will start earlier or finish later based on the competition schedule), plus a 24-hour broadcast of the Olympic News Channel, which includes summaries of the latest results, general reports on different events, and interviews with athletes. Fans will also be able to catch up on highlights and full events—all organised by the day, medal event or the sport. The IOC channel will also continue to feature historic content from past Olympic Games. In total, the IOC’s YouTube channel will offer over 2,200 hours of sporting event coverage from London 2012, including all the medals finals. Olympic Torch Relay The British Olympian Alison WILLIAMSON MBE (photo) and the Finance Manager of Archery GB Wendy STEAD carried the Olympic Torch on 30 May 2012 during its journey across Great Britain. Several other British archers have been or will be among the torchbearers. In total 8,000 inspirational people will carry the Olympic Flame across Great Britain. Nominated by someone they know, it will be their moment to shine, inspiring millions of people watching in their community, in their home country and worldwide. Several members of the British archery community have been selected as bearers of the Olympic torch. It started with Deer Park Archers’ senior coach Roger CRANG on 23 May and Paralympian and World Champion Mel CLARKE on 24 May. On 30 May it was the turn of Alison WILLIAMSON, who will represent Great Britain for the sixth times in an Olympic Games. The bronze medallist of the Athens 2004 Olympic Games ran at Much Wenlock. Archery GB Finance Manager Wendy STEAD carried the Torch during the Shrewbury leg. The next members of the British archery community planned to be among the torchbearers are: 29 June: Adam GUEST (England junior archery team manager) 30 June: Thomas TAYLOR (youth squad member) 30 June: Glen CROFT (elite squad archer) 30 June: Joanne ORBELL (youth judge) 5 July: Nicky HUNT (Commonwealth champion and World Cup medallist) 6 July: John WILLSON (retiring Junior Committee Chairman) 9 July: Naomi FOLKARD (Member of the British team and Olympian) 29 August: Helen GEORGE (Archery GB senior coach, Para-Archery) June 2012 World Archery Newsletter Page 4 Final Olympic Qualification Tournament in Ogden With one event, Ogden, USA, hosted three competitions from 18-24 June 2012: the Archery World Cup Stage 3, the Final Team Olympic Qualification (21 June) and the Final Individual Olympic Qualification tournaments (22 June). There were the last three team Olympic spots (three individual places for the three team members) per gender up for grab. Countries that had not yet qualified a full team at the Turin 2011 World Championships could enter the FQT for teams that took place on Thursday, 21 June.
