Your ten minute read! Daily News Page March 9th, 2021 Law, Policy and Governance Daily snippets 1. SC seeks States’ views on 50% cap on quota - The Supreme Court decided to examine whether its nearly three decades old judgment which fixed reservation for the marginalised and the poor in government jobs and educational institutions at 50% needs a relook. A five judge Bench, led by Justice Ashok Bhushan, set up to hear the challenge to the Maratha quota law, decided not to confine the question of reservation spilling over the 50% limit to just Maharashtra. - Another question is whether the Maharashtra State Reservation for Socially and Educationally Backward Classes (SEBC) Act of 2018, which provides 12% to 13% quota benefits for the Maratha community, thus taking the reservation percentage in the State across the 50% mark, was enacted under “extraordinary circumstances”. 2. Batla House encounter: ‘IM operative’ convicted - A Delhi court convicted Ariz Khan, allegedly associated with the terror outfit Indian Mujahideen (IM), for the murder of Delhi police inspector Mohan Chand Sharma in a case related to the 2008 Batla House encounter. The court will hear arguments on the quantum of sentence on March 15. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- National News/ Interventions Daily snippets 1. Will handle national security projects: ISRO - The Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) has said it will be in charge of projects linked to “national security and advanced technology”, such as the forthcoming Chandrayaan2 missions and the Gaganyaan mission that plans to send Indian cosmonauts into space. - However, the bulk of commercial activities would increasingly be handled by the newly formed New Space India Ltd (NSIL).

  • June N.173 Eoc Commissions
2 0 1 7 EOC Head Office | Villino Giulio Onesti | Via della Pallacanestro, 19 00135 Rome, Italy | Tel. +39 06 36857828 | Fax +39 06 36857666 | [email protected] www.eurolympic.org JUNE N.173 EOC A month of quiet hard work - June has been a month of quiet hard work for the European Olympic Committees’ (EOC) leadership, who have continued their hard work to strengthen ties and increase cooperation across Europe. Acting President Janez Kocijančič, Secretary General Raffaele Pagnozzi and other key EOC officials focused much of their attention this month on creating the structure necessary to support the Minsk 2019 European Games. The priority was to set up the Coordination Commission (CoCom), chaired by Hellenic NOC President and Baku 2015 CoCom leader Spyros Capralos. Capralos will lead a team of experienced experts from across Europe, who will work in close cooperation with Belarus to ensure that Minsk 2019 is another highly successful edition of Europe’s continental Games. As is now an annual tradition, the European Evening of Sport took place in June. The event is organised by the EOC EU Office in Brussels every summer, where key players from the Olympic Movement and the EU come together to discuss topics of common interest. Acting President Kocijančič attended together with numerous members of the EOC Executive Committee (EC), and then chaired a meeting of the EOC EU Office Foundation Council the following morning. There was also plenty of work for the EOC to do in preparation for the Györ 2017 European Youth Olympic Festival (EYOF) 2017, which takes place from 22 to 30 July.

The preceding year witnessed an intensification of AAI activities at all levels. I wish to place my special thanks and gratitude to SAHARA India Pariwar who came forward to join hands with Archery Association of India and gave away cash incentives of Rs.30 lakhs to achievers and promisers. This happens probably for the first time in the history of Indian Spors. While extending my good wishes for fruitful deliberations in the Annual General Meeting, I wish to put down the key achievement of Indian archery :- • India ranked 2nd as Nation in FITA ranking based on World Cup-2009 performance. • Indian Recurve Men team is still sustaining its 2nd position in overall world ranking. • Jayant Talukdar got 1st rank in World Cup-2009 and 4th position in world ranking. • Atanu Das and Seema Verma secured berth for Youth Olympic Games- Singapore. • Deepika Kumari emerges as a “World Champion” in Recurve Cadet Girls Category in Youth World Championship in USA.

Olympic medallists are the elite of world sport. They are people who enjoy in- ternational visibility, citizens of the whole world and models for young people, a source of joy for sport and iconic figures for the Olympic Movement.
