Volume 23 Issue 6 March, 2020

HIGH SCHOOL HAPPENINGS... by Principal Erin Short As the calendar turns to March and everyone looks forward to spring, the high school administration is busy preparing for the 2020-2021 school year. We appreciate all of your help in getting your student regis- tered for the appropriate classes. The course request numbers generated by student registration will be used to determine the number of sections of each course we will offer. In an effort to be as fiscally responsible as possible, we need accurate class counts; therefore, it is important for us to have all changes prior to mid- March. Additionally, please remember that if your student changes his/her schedule after May 22, WD will be posted to his/her transcript. If you have specific questions about your child’s schedule for next year, please contact our guidance department at 349-7304.

ACADEMIC AWARDS PROGRAMS

It is time to start planning for the end of year awards assemblies. The underclass awards programs will be held in the auditorium beginning promptly at 8:00 a.m. and should last about and forty-five minutes. The freshman assembly will be on May 21, the sophomore assembly on May 20, and the junior assembly on May 19. The senior banquet will be on May 19 beginning at 5:30 p.m. The senior awards will begin at 6:30 p.m. and last until approximately 8:45 p.m.

LAST THREE DAYS OF SCHOOL

Again this year, we will be in a testing schedule the last three days of school, June 2, 3, 4. We will admin- ister the last assessment of the quarter by period and students will be expected to take ALL of these assess- ments during the three day period. Similar to midterm exams, we will not make exceptions to this rule. Please make sure you plan accordingly with summer jobs, internships and travel.

SENIOR PROJECT

This program provides seniors with real-life experiences in their career choices. For ten days in May, par- ticipating seniors will “shadow” one mentor in a field in which the students have shown interest. During this time, they will gain an understanding of the practical nature of the professional world – an experience that will provide the necessary drive to succeed in college.

More information was distributed in January, but we’d like you to be aware of some important details now. For a senior to be eligible to go on Senior Project, the student must:

 Have a cumulative GPA of at least 2.0 after 7 semesters  Be passing all current classes in preparation for graduation  Have no out-of-school suspensions during senior year  Have missed no more than 7 days during the first three quarters of their senior year (95% attend- ance)

Students need to find their own placement. A list of possible on-site sponsors is available in the office. The last day of school for seniors who participate in Senior Project is May 1. These seniors will be exempt from final exams.

FRANCE TO SPAIN EDUCATION TRIP JULY 2021

The French 4 and Spanish 4 teachers are offering an educational and culturally immersive trip for stu- dents who are currently in levels 2 or 3 and planning to take levels 3 or 4 next year. Due to the limited space, this program is meant for serious students who wish to continue their language students to the highest level. Students who are interested must complete an application and be approved by the teachers, as this is not a trip sponsored by the high school. This trip will run in July of 2021 and we plan to tour the south of France and the north of Spain for 10 days.

A student and parent informational meeting was held on Tuesday, January 21, 2020. If you were unable to attend, please email ([email protected] or [email protected]) or have your child stop by Ms. Beveridge’s classroom (room 113) or Ms. Frazier’s classroom (room 111) for trip information and an application.

SOLON SCIENCE OLYMPIAD

The Solon Science Olympiad invitational season is quickly coming to a close. In the past few weeks, the team has had some formidable performances, including a 1st place win at both the Centerville and Piqua invi- tationals. The team won 1st place wins in four events at Centerville and in eighteen events at Piqua. With only three remaining invitationals this season, the team hopes to continue their success at Mentor, Regionals, and West Liberty Salem, and eventually at the Ohio State Tournament on April 26, 2020 in Colum- bus, Ohio.

SCHOOL COUNSELING NEWS A Newsletter for the Students and Parents of Solon High School

Editor: Cindy Russell March, 2020

Technology continues to change and impact the way we communicate with one another, especially our children. The following are some highlights from a recently published article, Tips and Tricks on Social Media for Parents. This information will be helpful when discussing the importance of appropri- ate use of social media.

Social Media and Identity: ● Students need some sort of identity online for branding purposes (college, job/career market searches for online information about candidates). ● Online/digital footprint is the new resume. ● Employers and colleges want to have positive, vibrant people online because they represent the job/ college. ● It is important to monitor/audit student’s online image. A simple Google search is helpful as a starting place. ● Search for your student by name : even if it is not them! Know who else has your child’s name! ● High School students should post positive/good things they are doing in the community/colleges/employers

DO look for this! ○ Colleges WILL do a Google search on your student. Scholarship committees, internship locations, and athletics departments will as well - even after awarding funds. ○ Funds/college offers have been revoked after negative social media posts (inappropriate language/ content posts is one of the largest reasons this happens). ○ Slowly takes time to develop a positive digital footprint. This process can take 1-2 years to develop the student’s image the way they should be seen by others!

Dialogue regarding image and safety is important: ● Discuss the future with your child-visit colleges, write down goals/careers. This serves as a guide to moti- vate students. ● Use posts you see to start a discussion in the car or at the dinner table. ● Be open to learning from them “show me more”. ● Discuss the need for posts to be LIGHT, BRIGHT, and POLITE! ● Best safety resource is dialog with your children! ● Research from McAfee (2012) says that 70% of teens reported that they hide online behavior from their parents. ● Dangers of friending people student does not know in person. ● Discuss how one tweet can get someone fired/in trouble with their employer/college. ● Geolocation on many apps track the location of the user; this presents a safety concern. Discuss this with your children and the dangers of this. ○ Some apps allow you to turn this feature off.

Some other tips to consider: ● Be fully present - cannot run from technology. ● New! Gaming addiction is now officially a health disorder according to The World Health Organization. Read the article for more information and warning signs. ● Limiting screen time? Great blog posting from a mom called Your Phone is not your Property - When to Allow Social Media to be Public? ● YOU decide.

SHS PTA Newsletter

March, 2020

SHS PTA PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE

The end of third quarter and spring break are fast approaching. SHS PTA is getting ready for our busy season. Please look for upcoming notices about Spring Budget Bin, student recognition, staff appreciation, After-Prom fundraisers and activities, and year-end programs. It takes many hands to make these events suc- cessful. Please help if you can.

Please mark your calendars with the After-Prom Celebrity Bartending fundraising event at 56 Kitchen on April 23rd. 56 Kitchen will be giving 10% of all sales all day long on this date. Also, a line will be added to all receipts for “after prom tip”, in addition to the tip jar. Many ways to help by participating in this fun event!

After-Prom is a huge endeavor and we would not be able to put on this popular and very important event without the support of the SHS families and our community. Watch for the upcoming all-school mailing asking for donations and volunteers for After-Prom. We need many volunteers to help set-up, work and clean-up the event. We also need your financial contributions. All donors will be recognized in our school’s newsletter and at the open house from 5:30 p.m. - 7:00 p.m. on May 9th.

Spring Budget Bin will be held April 1st to April 7th at Arthur Rd School. Please plan to help out by either volunteering sometime during this week long project, donate or consignor. All proceeds go to the Lois Gaze- ley PTA Memorial Scholarship for graduating seniors. For more information, visit Solon Council of PTAs Budget Bin Consignment Sale on Facebook or call 440-349-7757 Ext. 5192.

The next PTA meeting will be March 31 9:15 a.m. at the Board of Education conference room. Hope to see you at many of our upcoming functions or a meeting.

WHO WE ARE

The Solon Athletic Boosters continues to support all teams at Solon High School and Solon Middle School. In the past few months, we have purchased sideline cape jackets for our High School Girls' and Boys’ Lacrosse Team, a vaulting springboard for our Gymnastics team, and a watering tree for the Middle School sports program. We have also provided financial support for an out of town tournament for our Girls' Basketball and Boys' Baseball teams and contributed to our Boys' Basketball's team-building event. Addi- tionally, the Athletic Boosters will be purchasing a complex timing system for our track teams, with addition- al contributions from some generous donors.
