It is recalled how – at the moment a Polish state first came into being in the 10th century – its western border also followed a course more or less coinciding with these same two rivers. In subsequent cen- turies, the political limits of the Polish and German spheres of influence shifted markedly to the east. However, as a result of the drastic reverse suffered by Nazi Germany, the western border of Poland was re-set at the Oder-Neisse Line. Consideration is given to both the causes and consequences of this far-reaching geopolitical decision taken at the Potsdam Conference by the victorious Three Powers of the USSR, UK and USA. Since then, it has been caught during the periodical (three times per year) monitoring only sporadically. Conversely, in October and November 2012 R. cf. belingi was recorded frequently along an y60-km lowermost stretch of the Nida River. The abundance of this fish gradually increased downstream. This paper provides details of that phenomenon and discusses it in the context of the currently known distribution of this species. Old maps are proven to be very useful when it comes to solution of the modern research problems and are widely used in various science disciplines connected with specification of mutual relations between elements of the geographical environment. This fact stems from the increased consciousness of unique informa- tion recorded on old maps, which at their time constituted a basis for subsequent cartographical studies. The geographical characteristics of the Vistula river were depicted in a handwritten 12-sheet map made the first half of the 18th century by Franciszek Florian Czaki, a military cartographer. On the basis of his own terrain mapping, Franciszek Florian Czaki succeeded in creation of his work, which was intended to provide an example for the designed, detailed map of Poland, ordered by Józef Aleksander Jabłonowski, the Nowogród voivode, and later by the king Stanisław August Poniatowski. The map was fully based on terrain mapping, which included such details as: settlement, road and water networks, forests, land relief as well as main types of ownership: crown-, church-, and nobility-owned. Smart strategies for the transition in coal intensive regions Project No: 836819 Fact Sheet: “New Gliwice” Business and Education Centre April 2020 Description “New Gliwice” Business and Education Center GAPR Ltd. is a revitalized complex of buildings of the former Gliwice Coal Mine, located a short distance from the city center, near the Gliwice – Sośnica junction connecting the A1 and A4 motorways, Drogowa Trasa Średnicowa (the Intercity Road) and exit from the A4 motorway to Rybnicka Street. It is a unique place in which restored buildings of the former mine are adjacent to modern headquarters of IT companies and advanced technology enterprises from industries such as electrical engineering, power engineering, telecommunications, aviation. New Gliwice Business and Education Center is a unique place that owes its “life” to the “Gliwice” Coal Mine. Two beautifully renovated brick buildings growing out of the ground at Bojkowska Street, which attract the eye from a distance, are the remains of the Gliwice mine from the first decade of the 20th century. It is hard to believe that today’s vibrant New Gliwice is a place where coal was once mined, miners prepared for work, and foremen handed out tasks. In the twentieth century, an important point on the economic map of Gliwice was a coal mine, which extracted coal in the southern part of the city called Trynek. Until 1945, the plant was called “Gliwitzer Grube”, and after that date KWK “Gliwice”. Construction of this mining plant started in 1901 by combining 16 adjacent mining fields, which belonged to William Suermondt and a group of entrepreneurs from the Rhineland. -

PL-20-237 Lód´ z, Poland; e-mail: [email protected] Abstract: The quality of running waters is reflected in the composition of benthic diatom assemblages. The biological assessment of changes in the composition, and thus of changes in water quality, was carried out in the lowland mid-sized Bzura River, Central Poland, over the period of 30 years. The benthic diatom material consisted of samples collected in two investigation periods, in 1972 and in 2003–2004. The methods applied were three diatom indices, IPS – Specific Pollution Sensitivity Index, GDI – Genetic Diatom Index and TDI –Trophic Diatom Index, and the OMNIDIA computer program, which are commonly used in Europe. The aim of the study was demonstrating the process of restoration that occurred in the river. The Bzura was included to the most polluted ones in Poland till 1996. Since 1998 a gradual improvement in water quality has been observed, which is caused by a number of biological-technical measures, mostly a proper organization of sewage management in most cites located on the river. In 1972 the IPS classified Bzura water into Water Quality Class IV-V, while in 2003–2004 it reached much higher values, i.e. Class III-IV. On the basis of the GDI Class III was determined in the whole river in 2003–2004, while its values indicated Class III-IV in 1972.
