512 Book Reviews / Journal of Religion in Europe 4 (2011) 501–515 Jacob Neusner & Bruce Chilton (eds.), Religious Tolerance in World Religions (West Conshohocken, PA: Templeton Foundation Press, 2008), 396 pp., ISBN 978-1-59947-136-5, $39.95 Th e term ‘tolerance’ has fallen on tough times. People who prefer intolerance, policies of ‘zero tolerance,’ or claim not to tolerate the intolerant or the intolerable are only partly responsible. Th ey share culpability with those who call for moving Beyond Tolerance (as Gustav Niebuhr and others have titled several recent books) to deeper and fuller attitudes of acceptance, affi rmation, respect, and celebration of all myriad, manner, and variety of diversity. Yet some religious and nonreligious people balk at what they see as indiscrimi- nate approbation of ideas, activities, or worship they deem false or improper. It may be diffi cult, if not impossible, to celebrate features of faiths or ideologies that perceptibly contradict or oppose one’s own. When communities have experi- enced decades, centuries, or millennia of discord, ambivalent or tolerant coexist- ence could be “as good as it gets,” at least for a time. Where affi rmation is impracticable, toleration and coexistence for adherents of diff ering or confl icting religions and ideologies should be considered indispensable in a spiritually diverse world. Jacob Neusner, Bruce Chilton, and other contributors address such dissonances in Religious Tolerance in World Religions by inspecting political, scriptural, historical, theological, and ritual resources for tolerance (and to a lesser degree, intolerance) in ancient Greece, Rome, and Israel; classical and contemporary Judaism, Christi- an ity, Mormonism, Islam, Buddhism, and Hinduism. -

Know the Persian sources of Maratha history. 1.1 INTRODUCTION The history of Marathas can be best studied with the help of first hand source material like Bakhars, State papers, court Histories, Chronicles and accounts of contemporary travelers, who came to India and made observations of Maharashtra during the period of Marathas. The Maratha scholars and historians had worked hard to construct the history of the land and people of Maharashtra. Among such scholars people like Kashinath Sane, Rajwade, Khare and Parasnis were well known luminaries in this field of history writing of Maratha. Kashinath Sane published a mass of original material like Bakhars, Sanads, letters and other state papers in his journal Kavyetihas Samgraha for more eleven years during the nineteenth century. Historical Note: Depiction of Human Anatomy in Indian Archaeology
Indian Journal of History of Science, 44.2 (2009) 313-322 HISTORICAL NOTE DEPICTION OF HUMAN ANATOMY IN INDIAN ARCHAEOLOGY — A SELECT REPORT* Contains exploratory data of a few select depictions of human anatomy in Indian archaeology, dated between c.650-925 AD and paleograph dated to c.829-36 AD. These give the name of a clinical centre having a feminine name, a surgeon, a medicine specialist and a possible patron/ superintendent. Introduction The Atharvaveda enumerates treatment for leprosy1 and also deals with – – – human skeleton, etc.2. Carakasam. hita Sƒari rasthana2,3,4 by the begining of Christian era deals with anatomy which is termed by modern researchers as A–treya-Caraka system of Indian medicine or A–yurveda. It states, that, the human . body consists of 360 bones inclusive of 32 danta (teeth), 60 anguli (phalanges), 20 sƒalaka (long bones), majhana (marrow) contained in nalakas (hollowed – – – bones), 2 pasni (heels), 45 prs..tha-gatha (45 back joint-bones), 4 sƒira-kapala (pan shaped cranial bones), nails and sub-components of the cervical vertebrae all numbered under sub-headings. So is the human body which is divided into . – s.ad. anga (6 parts). It is known that Atreya was a vaidya (medicine specialist), while Susƒruta was a ves.aja (surgeon), who has described a range of surgical instruments5 along with principles of surgery6. Laparotomy has been dealt by – Caraka7. Ayurveda also has the most comprehensive ancient text of Drvyagun.a Vijn‚ya–na (Pharmacological Basis of Therapeutics). Orissa, preserves an edition of the c.8th AD manuscript ‘Cikitsa– Man‚jari–’ (Tenets of Therapeutics) in palm leaf form8. -

Her real name was<b> Bishnu Kumari Waiba </b> (waiba is a subgroup of Tamang) but she wrote under the pen name <b>Parijat</b> (Parijat is night-flowering fragrant jasmine flower). Her most acclaimed publication is Siris Ko Phul (The Blue Mimosa), which has also been adapted in the literature curriculum of some colleges in some English-speaking countries. <b>Early Life and Education</b> Parijat was born in 1937 in the hill station of Darjeeling, India, a place known for its tea gardens. Because her mother Amrit Moktan died early, she was raised by her father Dr. K.N. Waiba, who was a psychologist, and her grandparents. The birth place of Parijat, Darjeeling, was a major centre of Nepali language, culture and literature during her growing up years. Darjeeling, which was once part of Nepal, remains inhabited by Nepali people and never lost its character as a major centre of Nepali language, culture and literature. Sharing a close relationship with Nepal, Darjeeling has played an influential role in the development of Nepal's literature. Therefore, Parijat was intricately connected to Nepal and Nepali literature from her early childhood. Having had a keen interest in literature from her childhood, she was destined to play an important and well- appreciated role in strengthening Nepali literature. Parijat completed part of her schooling in Darjeeling and came to Kathmandu, Nepal in 1954. -

DIBRUGARH UNIVERSITY Syllabus of MIL(Nepali) for Undergraduate Courses under CBCS w.e.f. 2018-2019 Preamble The Syllabus for UG Courses in MIL (Nepali) is designed in accordance with Dibrugarh University Regulations for the Academic Programmes under Choice Based Credit System (CBCS), 2018. Three Years UG programmes include Six Semesters. No Honours course is offered in Nepali in UG Courses in Dibrugarh University. This Course of MIL (Nepali) is prepared for the students of B.A., B.Sc., & B.Com. The First Semester students of B.A., B.Sc., & B.Com. having honours in any other subjects will have to take MIL (Nepali—1.100). B.Sc. Non-Honors students have to take MIL (Nepali—1.100 & 2.100) in 1st & 2nd Semesters. B.A. Non-Honors students will have to choose MIL (Nepali—3.100 & 4.100) in 3rd & 4th Semesters. B.Com. Non-Honors students have to take MIL (Nepali—3.100 & 4.100) in 3rd & 4th Semesters. There shall be 100 marks and 2 credits for each paper. Each paper will be divided into 4 Units having 25 marks for each Unit. Examination and Evaluation shall be done on a continuous basis. I. Introduction Writer Parijat, the Nepali name for a species of jasmine with a special religious significance, is the pen name adopted by Bishnu Kumari Waiba, a Tamang woman who was born in the Tea-Estate of Darjeeling in 1937 A.D. She was the daughter of Kalu Sing Waiba and Amrita Moktan. She has been hailed by her contemporaries as one of the most innovative and first modern novelist of Nepal. The themes and philosophical outlook of her poems, novels and stories are influenced by her Marxist and feminist views and her own personal circumstances. Parijat suffered from a partial paralysis since her youth and ventured from her home only rarely during the past twenty years. She was unmarried and childless, a status that was not usual for a woman in Nepalese society and that is due partly to her illness and partly, it seems due to personal preference. Despite her disability, Parijat is a formidable force in Nepali literature, and her flower-filled room in a house near Balaju has become a kind of shrine for progressive Nepali writers. Parijat is a beautiful, intense-looking woman. She is concerned with a Nepali tribal group of antiquity but of uncertain origin. She is a Buddhist by birth and her childhood was deeply unhappy. According to Lama Religion, she was named Chheku Lama. Her mother died while Parijat was still young, and an elder brother drowned shortly afterward. At the age of about thirteen, it seems that she became passionately involved in a love affair that ended in heartbreak and a period of intense depression. -

Theatre and Life Heatre at the Intersection of Art, Politics and International Development

In particular, it Texamines how everyday social problems and macro-political conlicts are both represented and challenged through drama-based performances. How are theatre and social reality (dis)connected? How can relexivity and ambiguity allow for the aesthetic space to become a transformative place? What diferentiates street theatre performed in planned development from street theatre performed within social and political movements? How can performance and dramatic action move communities towards social action? To answer these questions I delve into both aesthetic and social performance contexts of three types of theatre and performance for social change available to Nepali audiences in the mid-2000s: kachahari natak (forum theatre/street theatre), loktantrik natak (theatre for democracy) and Maoist political cultural programmes that may include krantikari natak (revolutionary theatre). In other words, the political theatre for democracy performed by Aarohan heatre Group, development forum theatre performed by both Aarohan heatre in Kathmandu and by the Kamlari Natak Samuha, a haru activist group, in the rural areas of western Nepal, the political performance of the Maoist cultural groups, all aim to bring about social change, but how are they similar and how do they difer? Aarohan heatre Group, a Kathmandu-based professional company and Gurukul, the theatre school associated with the group, is at the core of this ethnography. It is the main ield site from which I tried to understand the world of theatre for social change in Nepal.
