Dramatic Turnaround for the Tenacious Wheelchair Rugby Japanese National Team August 23rd, 10:00p.m.-10:45p.m.[General TV]

“Gyakuten Jinsei” (Turning Life Around) presents true dramatic turnaround stories. On August 23, the day before the opening ceremony of the Paralympic Games, we show the turnaround story of Japan’s national wheelchair rugby team, which is hoped to win a medal.

Wheelchair rugby, originally called “murderball,” is a rough and rumbling sport. The Japanese national team has been taking part in the Paralympics since the Games in Athens, but due to the tough opponents, the team ranked at the bottom. In Beijing 2008, they were 7th out of 8 teams. However, after scoring a bronze medal at the Rio Games, they reached the 2018 IWRF World Championship finals where they fought against the champion team Australian Steelers and became the world’s number one. To compete against a team with players that have great physical abilities, the Japanese team had a unique and well thought out strategy.

At the studio, we welcome IKE Yukinobu, the longstanding captain of the Japanese team, and KURAHASHI Kae, the first female member of the national team. We will ask them how they managed to overcome their struggles and became the world champions, and their enthusiasm for the upcoming Tokyo 2020 Paralympic Games.
