Your Weekly Update May 26, 2021

In observance of Memorial Day, Lakeshore will operate under abbreviated hours, 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Monday, May 31.

Member News

Thank you for your patience and cooperation over the past year. We could not have successfully re-opened without your support. In response to new guidelines, the end of Alabama’s COVID-19 health order, and the fact that 76% of Lakeshore’s staff have been fully vaccinated, we are updating our requirements and operations on June 1.

Important changes beginning Tuesday, June 1:

Facemasks for members/guests are optional. We strongly urge you to wear a mask, per CDC guidance, if you have not been vaccinated. If you need information on vaccine eligibility or vaccination sites, visit the Alabama Department of Public Health’s website. Staff will continue to wear facemasks at work (not required when actively working out). We will begin personal training in the pool again. We encourage social distancing and acknowledge that includes keeping some fitness equipment closed or distanced in the facility, as well as some capacity limits. Please note that there may be separate guidelines/requirements for some activities.

Why June 1 and not now? We know some members have planned their time at Lakeshore and may wish to make changes as a result of our updates. Because we are committed to transparency and supporting every member, we believe giving four days’ notice (open days) is the right thing to do.

We recognize and respect that there are many different perspectives, preferences and personal approaches to the pandemic. Through our diverse Recovery Team, which included member representation, and the Member Advisory Group, we have sought to include these perspectives and public health guidance in our decisions. Our number one goal continues to be creating an environment that is as healthy and safe as possible for our members and staff.

Please be assured that we are continuing to meet frequently to ensure we are up-to-date on the latest information and to empower thoughtful, well-considered decisions. As always, we welcome your feedback at [email protected].

Throughout the pandemic, our staff has worked to be sure you had the option of visiting Lakeshore or using our online services. We could not be prouder of their dedication and hard work. If you have a moment, please say a word of thanks for their extraordinary commitment.

Remember, in addition to in-person activities, our live online classes and recorded classes are available on our website.

Give AVEED a Try!

You may have heard about the AVEED stationary exercise device, but have you tried it? We think you should! The UAB/Lakeshore Research Collaborative and RecTech are looking primarily for stroke survivors to test the virtual exercise device similar to a stationary arm bike, but any person with or without any type of disability may test the device. Your testing session will take place at Lakeshore and you will be compensated for your time. If you are interested in learning more about the AVEED device and study, please contact Amy Belcher at 205-313-7432 or [email protected]. Learn more.

Meet Your Tokyo Paralympic Wheelchair Rugby Team

After an additional year of training due to the postponement of the Games, the 12-member U.S. Paralympic Wheelchair Rugby Team was named over the weekend following a May training camp at Lakeshore. The team will return to Lakeshore for two more training camps, June 10-21 and August 7- 17, before leaving for the Tokyo Paralympics, which will take place August 24-September 5. We want to give a special thank you to you, our members, who share the Fieldhouse with the team during training camps. Thank you for your understanding and support of the team as they work hard to represent Team USA.
