One Hundred Years of Railway Operations in Hong Kong One Hundred Years of Railway Operations in Hong Kong 香 港 鐵 路 的 蛻 變 Hong Kong’s Railways – Past, Present and Future 序言 Foreword 年 10 月 1 日,香港開始單軌火車服務。 years ago, on 1 October 1910, railway operations first began 100 in Hong Kong making use of a single track line. Although only incremental growth occurred in the first 60 years of the following century, the last 40 years have seen a major expansion of the rail network. That expansion still continues today, reflecting the importance of railways to Hong Kong, both domestically and in supporting closer integration with the Mainland. This booklet tries to provide a brief summary of the development of Hong Kong’s railways, from their very earliest beginnings to the present day. For those who wish to learn more, a visit to the Hong Kong Railway Museum at Tai Po Market is highly recommended. There are also many excellent resources to be found in Hong Kong’s public libraries, Hong Kong’s Public Records Office, and historical research sources readily available on the internet. 4 Early History of Railways in China 8 The Scramble for Railway Concessions Leading to the Building of the Kowloon-Canton Railway 14 The KCR (British Section) in the Period from 1910 to 1960s 1960 至1980 年代的鐵路發展 18 Railway Development in 1960s, 1970s and 1980s 1990 年代至今的鐵路發展 24 Railway Development in the 1990s and up to the Present First regular passenger and freight train Woosung Road narrow-gauge railway Construction begins on British Section of service drawn by a steam locomotive in opens between Shanghai and Woosung, KCR from Kowloon to Lo Wu. The first railway to successfully operate both freight and passenger services drawn by a steam locomotive was the 9-mile (14.4 km) long Stockton – Darlington Railway in Great Britain, which was opened on 27 September 1825. Thereafter railway networks were rapidly developed in Europe, America and India. It was only natural, therefore, to expect proposals to be made to develop railways in China. On 20 July 1863 a petition seeking a concession from the Imperial Chinese Government to construct a railway between Shanghai and Soochow was presented by a group of 27, mostly British, companies to the Imperial Commissioner for Foreign Trade and Governor of Kiangsu, Li Hung Chang. Li rejected the petition, considering that railways in China should be built and run by 轎子。 the Chinese people. Sedan chair. In 1863-4, Sir Rowland MacDonald Stephenson (1808-95), a British Engineer who had extensive experience of developing the first railways in India, visited China with the object of promoting similar development. However, his proposals were given only limited support, with most resisting his ideas. The first commercial railway to be built in China was the 2ft 6in (0.76 m) narrow-gauge Woosung Road, so named to disguise from the Chinese authorities the fact that a railway rather than a road was being constructed. After its opening in July 1876, the Chinese authorities, who were upset at having been misled, purchased the railway at cost and proceeded to dismantle it immediately after the last train service was run on 20 October 1877. “Locomotion No.1”, Stockton – Darlington Railway, UK. Woosung Road: The Opening Day, 1 July 1876. In 1905 he was given responsibility for the construction of the Imperial Peking-Kalgan railway, the first to be built and operated in China without foreign assistance. 6 Early History of Railways in China In 1880/81 another attempt was made to build a railway to carry coal from a colliery located in the Kaiping district of Chili Province (renamed Hebei Province in 1928) to ships moored on a nearby river. Leading the project was the Cantonese merchant Tong King Sing, who began his career as a Hong Kong Government interpreter, later becoming Director-General of the China Merchants’ Steam Navigation Company, which had been founded in 1872 by Li Hung Chang, the now Viceroy of Chili, as part of the “Self Strengthening Movement” in China in an attempt to break the foreign powers’ monopoly on major shipping routes.

  • Hong Kong in Brief
Brand Hong Kong’s visual identity — a powerful and energetic dragon — was designed to communicate the city’s historic link with a mythical icon. The image incorporates the Chinese characters for 'Hong Kong' (香港) and the letters 'H' and 'K'. This dual expression symbolises the blend of East and West that characterises Hong Kong. The dragon's fluid shape imparts a sense of movement and speed, communicating that Hong Kong is forever changing. The brandline — ‘Asia's world city’ — highlights Hong Kong's multiple roles as an international business hub, a gateway to economic opportunities in the mainland of China and Asia, and a center for arts and culture. • PRESS STATEMENT 13 November 2019 MTR Unable to Provide
PRESS STATEMENT 13 November 2019 MTR Unable to Provide Normal Services Due to Repeated Vandalism by Rioters The MTR network and facilities have been repeatedly vandalised over the past several days. A total of seven rail lines were affected today (13 November 2019) and train service on some of the lines had to be fully or partially suspended. Furthermore, seven stations were forced to close as station facilities were maliciously damaged or operations were disrupted. A large number of commuters all over Hong Kong was adversely affected because of these incidents. The MTR Corporation strongly condemns the rioters’ acts which endangered the safety of passengers, MTR staff and railway operations. The Corporation has reported the cases to the Police and reserves the right to take legal action against the parties concerned. After the end of service hours yesterday, rioters broke into several closed stations to set fires and vandalise trains, stations and trackside equipment. On the East Rail Line, there were arson attacks that targeted two trains stabled at Sheung Shui Station and a train stabled at University Station. Another train stabled at Mong Kok East Station was also damaged. In addition, a track-side signaling equipment room near Fo Tan was attacked. Considering these stations had already been damaged during the day yesterday, the Corporation had no choice but to suspend the train service of the East Rail Line from the start of traffic hours today. Following recovery efforts by engineering personnel, train service between Hung Hom and Tai Wai stations resumed at around 5pm with trains by-passing Kowloon Tong Station.

It is the intention to solicit public views through discussion on four topics, namely, strategic roles of NDAs, people-oriented communities, sustainable living environment and implementation mechanism. This topical note is prepared to provide background information on strategic roles of NDAs with a view to facilitating public discussion on this topic. 1 Background “The Planning and Development Study on North East New Territories” (the NENT Study) commissioned in the late 1990’s, identified Kwu Tung North (KTN), Fanling North (FLN) and Ping Che/Ta Kwu Ling (PC/TKL) as suitable New Development Areas (NDAs). It recommended that KTN, FLN and PC/TKL could proceed as one scheme (Three-In-One Scheme), i.e. an integral whole with shared community facilities, infrastructure and reprovisioning arrangements.
