I am particularly excited about this year’s Open House after such a long winter. Dulwich and its surrounding areas really do come alive during the Festival, and this year there are over 200 artists throwing open their doors to you during the two weekends of Open House. Once again, you can see and buy an incredible array of artworks by photographers, print makers, painters, jewellers, ceramicists and more. The diversity and quality of the work, seen in inspiring settings usually closed to the public, continues to amaze me. This year, as well as the artists and designers opening their houses and studios, some of the world’s most famous street artists are descending on the area to bring their own unique interpretations of the Dulwich Picture Gallery’s collection to the streets. And look out, too, for the Culture Cart, which will be making its way around the area. As ever, I would like to thank all the artists and hosts who have participated this year, without whose hard work Artists’ Open House would not be possible. I would also like to thank Ingrid Beazley, Lucy Bainbridge of Bainbridge Studios, David Arkell at The Colourhouse, and Steve Smith, of Property In.com our main sponsor and provider of the distinctive signposts outside the artists’ houses, for their continued support. I hope you enjoy this year’s Artists’ Open House. • 'Reforming Academicians', Sculptors of the Royal Academy of Arts, C
‘Reforming Academicians’, Sculptors of the Royal Academy of Arts, c.1948-1959 by Melanie Veasey Doctoral Thesis submitted in partial fulfilment of the requirements for the award of Doctor of Philosophy of Loughborough University, September 2018. © Melanie Veasey 2018. For Martin The virtue of the Royal Academy today is that it is a body of men freer than many from the insidious pressures of fashion, who stand somewhat apart from the new and already too powerful ‘establishment’.1 John Rothenstein (1966) 1 Rothenstein, John. Brave Day Hideous Night. London: Hamish Hamilton Ltd., 1966, 216. Abstract Page 7 Abstract Post-war sculpture created by members of the Royal Academy of Arts was seemingly marginalised by Keynesian state patronage which privileged a new generation of avant-garde sculptors. This thesis considers whether selected Academicians (Siegfried Charoux, Frank Dobson, Maurice Lambert, Alfred Machin, John Skeaping and Charles Wheeler) variously engaged with pedagogy, community, exhibition practice and sculpture for the state, to access ascendant state patronage. Chapter One, ‘The Post-war Expansion of State Patronage’, investigates the existing and shifting parameters of patronage of the visual arts and specifically analyses how this was manifest through innovative temporary sculpture exhibitions. Chapter Two, ‘The Royal Academy Sculpture School’, examines the reasons why the Academicians maintained a conventional fine arts programme of study, in contrast to that of industrial design imposed by Government upon state art institutions for reasons of economic contribution. This chapter also analyses the role of the art-Master including the influence of émigré teachers, prospects for women sculpture students and the post-war scarcity of resources which inspired the use of new materials and techniques.

International Communications Strategy Unpublished extract – Case Study: Dulwich OnView Authors: Silvia Cambie & Yang-May Ooi INTERNATIONAL COMMUNICATIONS STRATEGY UNPUBLISHED EXTRACT – CASE STUDY: DULWICH ONVIEW CHAPTER: CONNECTING COMMUNITIES Author’s Note ∗ The following is an unpublished case study which was written for the book International Communications Strategy which I co-authored with Silvie Cambie. We had too much material for the book and needed to give priority to international case studies so a number of UK case studies were reluctantly dropped from the final book, this one on Dulwich OnView, being one of them. Dulwich OnView was a blog project which I created and developed for the Friends of the Dulwich Picture Gallery and exemplifies the principles of non-hierarchical collaborative working and authentic engagement and trust which are found in successful social media projects. The project won the Best Small Museums Website 2010 at the Archimuse Conference, a major conference within the museums and heritage sector. International Communications Strategy was nominated for the FT Goldman Sachs Business Book of the Year Award 2009. THE EAST INDIA CLUB SOME ACCOUNT OF THOSE MEMBERS OF THE CLUB & STAFF WHO LOST THEIR LIVES IN WORLD WAR ONE 1914-1919 & WORLD WAR TWO 1939-1945 THE NAMES LISTED ON THE CLUB MEMORIALS IN THE HALL DEDICATION The independent ambition of both Chairman Iain Wolsey and member David Keating to research the members and staff honoured on the Club’s memorials has resulted in this book of Remembrance. Mr Keating’s immense capacity for the necessary research along with the Chairman’s endorsement and encouragement for the project was realised through the generosity of member Nicholas and Lynne Gould. The book was received in to the Club on the occasion of a commemorative service at St James’s Church, Piccadilly in September 2014 to mark the centenary of the outbreak of the First World War. Second World War members were researched and added in 2016 along with the appendices, which highlights some of the episodes and influences that involved our members in both conflicts. In October 2016, along with over 190 other organisations representing clubs, livery companies and the military, the club contributed a flagstone of our crest to the gardens of remembrance at the National Memorial Arboretum in Staffordshire. First published in 2014 by the East India Club.
