It describes videocassette titles added to the National Agricultural Library (NAL) collection since 1995, and continues efforts by the Alternative Farming Systems Information Center (AFSIC) to provide access to non-print resources related to alternative agriculture: sustainable farming systems and practices, specialty crops, on-farm enterprises, and direct marketing techniques, as well as associated environmental topics. A special effort has been made to add titles pertaining to aquaculture, a topic that has been added to AFSIC's scope since 1995. Using the July 2000 directory in conjunction with the 1995 volume, provides a relatively complete listing of all videos related to alternative agriculture currently in the NAL collection. Everything was perfect. It was like living in heaven. Everybody had a job. The mine was going." He is a short, wiry, sixty-one year old man. He was standing within shouting distance of Peter's Mine, a pit that he says he first pulled iron ore out of in 1941. By the 1960s, the last bits of magnetite had been hauled out of the mine. And when the miners left, the pit became a dump site for industrial wastes. Now it's covered over. Vegetation—weeds, dried grass—has grown thickly—but the terrain still bears a depression where the earth was opened. He remembers the plodding trucks—looking almost like troop movements —methodically working their way up the hill, with iron barrels in tow, to lean back against the mine shafts and toss tons of liquids and solids down the pit. "I've seen a lot of 55 gallon drums go into Peter's Mine. I don't know what was in some of them. But I know some of them had iron parts from cars." II The cars were Fords. It was the garbage from Ford's nearby Mahwah plant that was dumped in the shafts of Upper Ringwood. And a glance into the company's past provides an ironic backdrop for a story of corporate waste disposal. It is said of Henry Ford that he hated the wastes of industry.

  • Composting Project Was Funded by the U.S
    ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS The Georgia Department of Community Affairs (DCA's) Georgia Home Composting Project was funded by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency July 1, 1992. The grant called for the establishment of five home composting demonstration sites and one workshop for volunteers willing to contribute forty hours training others in home composting. At the time of the grant awards, DCA funded seven local governments with EPA funds and offered three others the opportunity to apply for grants. Thus, in the Spring of 1992, ten sites will open. One workshop to train volunteers was expanded to five workshops where up to two hundred persons will be given a day-long orientation on home composting and educational techniques. DCA has contracted with the University of Georgia's Cooperative Extension Service to prepare educational materials for the sites and the workshops and to help with training at the workshops. We wish to acknowledge the contributions of persons who helped prepare the grant proposal as well as those who have supported the development, expansion and execution of DCAs Georgia Home Composting Project. Assisting DCA staff in preparation of the grant were Susan Smith of C2S2; Clark Gregory, Ph. D., Woods End Laboratories; Henry Bryant, Atlanta Clean City Commission, who also recruited the artist, Lisa South, designer of the site signs; and Don Jackson, Zoo Atlanta.
