The activities in this guide are designed to help students think critically and clarify their own feelings about various issues, as well as to provide them with factual information and understandings about animals. Thirty-five concepts have been identified under four major chapters: (1) Human/Animal Relationships; (2) Pet Animals; (3) Wild Animals; and (4) Farm Animals. Chapters contain concepts and activities for each of the four curriculum areas: Language Arts, Social Studies, Mathematics, and Health/Science. The curriculum guide consists of four books encompassing the following levels: Preschool to Kindergarten, grades 1-2, 3-4, and 5-6. The same subtitles are used in each of the four levels. Appendices have lists of humane education resource organizations and addresses of resource publishers. California Jean Stewart preface In 1933, the National P.T.A. Congress issued the following statement in support of humane education: "Children trained to extend justice, kindness, and mercy to animals become more just, kind, and considerate in their relations with each other. Character training along these lines will result in men and women of broader sl mpathies, more humane, more law-abiding in o'ery respect more valuable citizens. "Humane education is teaching in the schools and colleges of the nations the principles of justice, goodwill, and humanity toward all life. The cultivation of the spirit of kindness to animals is but the starting point towards that larger humanity which includes one's fellow of every race and clime. A generation of people trained in these principles will solve their difficulties as neighbors and not as enemies." The message of this statement speaks even more directly to the 1980's than to the decade in which it was written. Children today face the dilemma of growing, up in a world that is politically and environmentally unstable-a world in which both individual and national decision-making become increasingly important to the survival of both humans and other animals. humane education, incorporated into the curriculum of our nation's schools, can help children develop the sensitivity and understanding they will need to make sound personal and political decisions based on concern for all living creztures. People and Animals: A litamane Educatiun Curriculum Guide has been developed to provide the framework for integrating humane education into the traditional elementary schnal curriculum. In addition, it will serve as the basis for the development of teacher training courses, expanded classroom programming, and supplemental humane education teaching materials. Publication of the guide represents fulfillment of a major objective of the National Association for the Advancement of "Juniata! Education, The 1 iiimane Society of the United States, and the educators who contributed their time and talents to the project. More importantly, it reprments a key factor in making humane education an integral part of the elementary school experience. Everything was perfect. It was like living in heaven. Everybody had a job. The mine was going." He is a short, wiry, sixty-one year old man. He was standing within shouting distance of Peter's Mine, a pit that he says he first pulled iron ore out of in 1941. By the 1960s, the last bits of magnetite had been hauled out of the mine. And when the miners left, the pit became a dump site for industrial wastes. Now it's covered over. Vegetation—weeds, dried grass—has grown thickly—but the terrain still bears a depression where the earth was opened. He remembers the plodding trucks—looking almost like troop movements —methodically working their way up the hill, with iron barrels in tow, to lean back against the mine shafts and toss tons of liquids and solids down the pit. "I've seen a lot of 55 gallon drums go into Peter's Mine. I don't know what was in some of them. But I know some of them had iron parts from cars." II The cars were Fords. It was the garbage from Ford's nearby Mahwah plant that was dumped in the shafts of Upper Ringwood. And a glance into the company's past provides an ironic backdrop for a story of corporate waste disposal. It is said of Henry Ford that he hated the wastes of industry.

  • Composting Project Was Funded by the U.S
    ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS The Georgia Department of Community Affairs (DCA's) Georgia Home Composting Project was funded by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency July 1, 1992. The grant called for the establishment of five home composting demonstration sites and one workshop for volunteers willing to contribute forty hours training others in home composting. At the time of the grant awards, DCA funded seven local governments with EPA funds and offered three others the opportunity to apply for grants. Thus, in the Spring of 1992, ten sites will open. One workshop to train volunteers was expanded to five workshops where up to two hundred persons will be given a day-long orientation on home composting and educational techniques. DCA has contracted with the University of Georgia's Cooperative Extension Service to prepare educational materials for the sites and the workshops and to help with training at the workshops. We wish to acknowledge the contributions of persons who helped prepare the grant proposal as well as those who have supported the development, expansion and execution of DCAs Georgia Home Composting Project. Assisting DCA staff in preparation of the grant were Susan Smith of C2S2; Clark Gregory, Ph. D., Woods End Laboratories; Henry Bryant, Atlanta Clean City Commission, who also recruited the artist, Lisa South, designer of the site signs; and Don Jackson, Zoo Atlanta.
