  • The Business Organisation of the Bourbon Factories
The Business Organization of the Bourbon Factories: Mastercraftsmen, Crafts, and Families in the Capodimonte Porcelain Works and the Royal Factory at San Leucio Silvana Musella Guida Without exaggerating what was known as the “heroic age” of the reign of Charles of Bourbon of which José Joaquim de Montealegre was the undisputed doyen, and without considering the controversial developments of manufacturing in Campania, I should like to look again at manufacturing under the Bourbons and to offer a new point of view. Not only evaluating its development in terms of the products themselves, I will consider the company's organization and production strategies, points that are often overlooked, but which alone can account for any innovative capacity and the willingness of the new government to produce broader-ranging results.1 The two case studies presented here—the porcelain factory at Capodimonte (1740-1759) and the textile factory in San Leucio (1789-1860)—though from different time periods and promoted by different governments, should be considered sequentially precisely because of their ability to impose systemic innovations.2 The arrival of the new sovereign in the company of José Joaquin de Montealegre, led to an activism which would have a lasting effect.3 The former was au fait with economic policy strategy and the driving force of a great period of economic modernization, and his repercussions on the political, diplomatic and commercial levels provide 1 For Montealegre, cf. Raffaele Ajello, “La Parabola settecentesca,” in Il Settecento, edited by Giovanni Pugliese Carratelli (Naples, 1994), 7-79. For a synthesis on Bourbon factories, cf. Angela Carola Perrotti, “Le reali manifatture borboniche,” in Storia del Mezzogiorno (Naples, 1991), 649- 695.

  • Superb Naples, a Journey Through Twenty-Seven Centuries of History and Culture
4 JANUARY 2017 CATERINA POMINI 3858 SUPERB NAPLES, A JOURNEY THROUGH TWENTY-SEVEN CENTURIES OF HISTORY AND CULTURE Summarizing a city like Naples in just one article is quite challenging. Founded by the ancient Greeks in the 6th century BC, the capital of Campania is so old, large and filled with amazing sights that it's almost impossible to make a complete list of things to see and do. We did our best, so we hope that the information provided will help you enjoy your visit. A popular travel destination since the time of the Grand Tour of Europe, Naples is mainly synonymous with impressive archaeological treasures, superb architecture and mouth-watering food. Anarchic but breathtaking, Italy's third-largest city boasts a historic centre that is studded with Medieval, Baroque and Renaissance buildings and was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1995. Furthermore, the capital of Campania is home to one of the oldest universities in the world ( University of Naples – Federico II), the artistic tradition of Capodimonte porcelain and numerous theatres where – during the Late Baroque period – opera seria and opera buffa had their origins. Certainly, at first glance, this city can look shabby and neglected; but if you look beyond the veneer, you will discover a place of unexpected charm and beauty. A (very) brief history of Naples Prior to becoming a Roman colony (326 BC), Naples had been a Greek settlement. According to legend, Greek sailors from Rhodes first established a small commercial port on the former island of Megaride, where Castel dell'Ovo now stands.

  • Ceramic, Meant As an Expression of Art, Is a Part of the Human Beings
The history of ceramics Italy ΠΡΟΓΡΑΜΜΑ LEONARDO DA VINCI Pottery, meant as an expression of art, is part of the human beings’ story since 35.000 years. Its developments faithfully show and explain evolution of religious and cultural behaviours and of socio-economical and commercial affairs of Italy. From the first to the third century In Italy the origins of ceramics date back to the I century, undergoing the influence of Etruscan and Roman cultures. We are speaking about rudimentary techniques, named “technique of black figures” and “technique of red figures”, characterised by the presence of silhouettes on the rim of pots. Fictile proofs of these products were founded in the Northern part of Italy (in Este, Padova, Vicenza, Montebelluna, Altino, Adria and Adriano Polesine were discovered numerous necropolises giving back a large sample of ceramic pots and utensils and so on. In Arezzo, between the end of the I and the beginning of the III century p.c. there was the best production of a Roman ceramic type named “sealed earth”. Productions belonging to this category are characterized by a quite polished surface with a typical coral colour. Shapes were obtained through an earthenware mould; the name “sealed earth” really rises from the use of this mould that was called “sigillum”, while executing sleaves were called “sigillatores”. From the fourth to the fifth century During this period a new technique - named “engobe” – appeared, foreshadowing the coming of majolica. The surface of engobe products was covered by a white coat, decorated with graffito designs or painted with brown or green colours.
