These larvae also are the basis for a revised description of the larval stage of C. longisetosus. Study of the larvae confirms the placement of the species in the genus Cloeodes Traver , and C. longisetosus larvae may be distinguished from larval congeners by their relatively short maxillary palp. Male adults of C. longisetosus have a pronounced rectangular median process between the forceps bases that is unique at least among known male adult congeners, and thus indicates that such a feature may or may not be p resent in Cloeodes. We recognize new synonyms for the pantropical genus Cloeodes Traver [= Potamocloeon Gillies, syn. n.; = Maliqua Lugo-Ortiz & McCafferty, syn. n.] and the following new species synonyms and new combination: C. dentatus (Kimmins), comb. n. A species previously placed in the genus Afrobaetodes Demoulin instead belongs to Cloeodes [C. pusillus (Navás), comb. n.]. Securiops, gen. n., is established for the larvae formerly and incorrectly attributed to Potamocloeon, and this genus contains four species, including S. macafertiorum (Lugo-Ortiz), comb. n., the type species. E-mail: [email protected] Abstract In the present work, two new species of Cloeodes Traver are described based on nymphs and adults collected in the State of Espírito Santo, Southeastern Brazil. The main characteristics that distinguish the new species from its congeners are, in C. itajara sp. nov.: a) labrum with dorsal arc of setae composed of 12 setae, b) segment III of labial palp with robust and pectinate setae on inner margin, c) fore femur with apex projected, with 5−6 blunt setae, d) male imago with abdom- inal terga V−VII with a anterolateral triangular black mark; in C. aymore sp. nov.: a) labrum with dorsal arc of setae com- posed of 1 + 0 + 3 setae, b) fore femur with apex projected, with 2 blunt setae, c) male imago with abdominal terga IV with kidney-like median brown mark. Key words: taxonomy, new species, South America, mayfly, macroinvertebrate Introduction The genus Cloeodes Traver, 1938 (Ephemeroptera: Baetidae) has a widespread pantropical distribution with repre- sentatives in North America (Wiersema & Baumgardner 1999), Central (Traver 1938) and South America (Nieto & Richard 2008), Africa (Waltz & McCafferty 1994, Jacobus et al.

  • FIRST REPORT and NEW SPECIES of the GENUS CLOEODES (EPHEMEROPTERA: BAETIDAE) from Australial,2
122 ENTOMOLOGICAL NEWS FIRST REPORT AND NEW SPECIES OF THE GENUS CLOEODES (EPHEMEROPTERA: BAETIDAE) FROM AUSTRALIAl,2 C. R. Lugo-Ortiz, W. P. McCatTerty3 ABSTRACT: Cloeodes fustipalpus, new species, and C. illiesi, new species, are described from larvae from eastern Australia. The two species represent the first report of Cloeodes from the continent. Cloeodes fustipalpus is distinguished by the irregular labral setation, clublike labial palps segment 3, and abdprninal color pattern. Cloeodes illiesi is distinguished by the bifid right prostheca with a medially setose branch, reduced maxillary palps, medially bulbous labial palps segment 3, abdominal color pattern, and narrow-elongate gills. Numerous morphological char acteristics indicate that C. fustipalpus and C. illiesi are most closely related to the Afrotropical C. inzingae and the Oriental C. longisetosus and C. soldani. Three biogeographic scenarios are discussed that would explain the world distribution of C/oeodes. Traver (1938) erected the genus Cloeodes (Ephemeroptera: Baetidae) for the Caribbean species C. maculipes Traver and C. consignatus Traver. The genus is distinct among small minnow mayflies because its larvae have eden tate tarsal claws (Fig. 6; Waltz and Mccafferty 1987b: Fig. 8), a conspicuous subproximal arc of long, fine, simple setae on the tibiae (Fig. 6; Waltz and McCafferty 1987b: Fig. 7), and setal tufts on sterna 2-6 (Waltz and Mccafferty 1987a: Fig. 5; Waltz and McCafferty 1987b: Figs. 9, 44). Adults of Cloeodes are distinguished by having segment 2 of the male genital forceps basally bul bous and with abundant minute, fine, simple setae (Waltz and Mccafferty 1987b: Fig. 34). Cloeodes has been reported from the Afrotropics, Neotropics, Orient, and southwestern Nearctic (Traver 1938, Waltz and McCafferty 1987ab, 1994, Kluge 1991, Flowers 1991, Lugo-Ortiz and Mccafferty 1993, 1994, 1995, McCafferty and Lugo-Ortiz 1995, McCafferty et al.

SGMA seeks to achieve sustainability, which is defined as the absence of several undesirable results, including “depletions of interconnected surface water that have significant and unreasonable adverse impacts on beneficial users of surface water” (Water Code §10721). The Nature Conservancy (TNC) is a science-based, nonprofit organization with a mission to conserve the lands and waters on which all life depends. Like humans, plants and animals often rely on groundwater for survival, which is why TNC helped develop, and is now helping to implement, SGMA. Earlier this year, we launched the Groundwater Resource Hub, which is an online resource intended to help make it easier and cheaper to address environmental requirements under SGMA. As a first step in addressing when depletions might have an adverse impact, The Nature Conservancy recommends identifying the beneficial users of surface water, which include environmental users. This is a critical step, as it is impossible to define “significant and unreasonable adverse impacts” without knowing what is being impacted. To make this easy, we are providing this letter and the accompanying documents as the best available science on the freshwater species within the boundary of your groundwater sustainability agency (GSA).

After more than 200 years of progressive research, Baetidae is now known as the most species-rich family in the order. Two competing proposals of family division were proposed: Cloeoninae and Baetinae, or Protopatellata and Anteropatellata. Both classifications were established without cladistic support. The purpose of this paper is to investigate the phylogenetic relationships of the family Baeti- dae using morphological evidence and evaluate these classification schemes. The matrix included 245 morphological characters derived from larval and adult stages across 164 species in 98 genera.

Of the three species described by Traver (1938), only the type-species C. maculipes remains in this genus (Domínguez et al. 2006). A revision of Cloeodes by Waltz & McCafferty (1987) redefined its distinct characteristics and revealed the genus to be a widespread group of Neotropical origin with several species from South and Central America as well as from Southwestern North America and Southeast Asia. Despite the vast range of the genus, with 15 species known from South America (Nieto & Richard 2008; Salles & Nascimento 2009), only four species have been reported from Brazil: Cloeodes auwe Salles & Batista, 2004, from Mato Grosso state; C. hydation McCafferty & Lugo-Ortiz, 1995 from Minas Gerais and Mato Grosso states; C.
