METROHEALTH MEDICAL CENTER (AN AFFILIATED HOSPITAL OF CASE WESTERN RESERVE UNIVERSITY SCHOOL OF MEDICINE) , OH

PROGRAMS OFFERED Fully approved, four-year program in anatomic and clinical pathology. In anatomic pathology, training is offered in tissue diagnosis (autopsy and surgical specimens), cytopathology, cytogenetics, dermatopathology, electron microscopy, molecular pathology, immunopathology, immunocytochemistry, neuropathology and perinatal pathology. Appropriate training is also provided in forensic pathology and toxicology. The Clinical Pathology division offers training in clinical chemistry, hematopathology, (including gene molecular testing and flow cytometry), laboratory immunology (serology and cellular immunology), microbiology and transfusion medicine. Residents participate in the teaching of medical students from Case Western Reserve Medical School. Fellowship is available in cytopathology.

TYPES AND NUMBERS OF APPOINTMENTS There are 9 resident positions including 2 categorical first-year positions. The categorical first-year positions are offered through the National Resident Matching Program. One fellowship position in cytopathology fellowship is offered annually.

FACILITIES MetroHealth Medical Center is a principal teaching hospital of Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine (CWRU). All active staff physicians hold a faculty appointment at Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine. In the past year, MetroHealth has served 300,000 patients at more than 1.4 million visits in its hospitals and health centers, and has delivered roughly 2,979 newborns.

The pathology statistics for the past year (2018) are: 67 autopsies; over 2.7 million laboratory tests per year; 25,000 surgical specimens and over 25,000 cytology cases. Staff and facilities are available for service and development in postmortem and surgical pathology, neuropathology, pediatric pathology, dermatopathology, immunopathology, immunohistochemistry, electron microscopy, hematopathology, cytochemistry, cytogenetics, cytopathology, microbiology, clinical immunology, blood bank, and clinical chemistry. The Department has a dedicated staff and a laboratory computer with peripherals in all laboratories and nursing stations. The hospital Library's resource collection consists of access to 800 electronic journal titles, over 10,500 bound journals, 3,800 books, over 1,000 electronic books, including an up to date collection of Pathology texts. Additional online resources provided by the Library include PubMed, OVID, ClinicalKey, and UpToDate. CWRU's Cleveland Health Sciences Library and Allen Memorial Medical Library are available to all house officers.

COMMUNITY Cleveland is the home of the internationally renowned Cleveland , the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, the Cleveland of Art, , Cleveland Aquarium, Karamu Theater, and the Cleveland Opera. Academic institutions in addition to Case Western Reserve University, in this locale are: Cleveland State University, John Carroll University, , Baldwin Wallace University, and Cuyahoga Community College. Professional sports are represented by the (baseball), (football), (basketball), and the Monsters (hockey). An extensive metropolitan park system surrounds the Cleveland area and offers boating, swimming, horseback riding, golfing, hiking, fishing, and camping facilities.

STIPENDS AND MAINTENANCE Stipends begin at $57,633 (2020-2021 figures) for the first year postgraduate level. Stipend levels are re- evaluated annually effective July 1. An additional stipend of $1200 per annum is provided for chief resident(s). Residents are entitled to three weeks vacation during the year. All house officers are provided with uniforms and laundry service. They receive professional liability, and hospitalization insurance plans are available at low group rates.

APPLICATIONS All applications must be submitted through ERAS. Residency candidates must be graduates of approved medical schools in the U.S. or Canada. Candidates of foreign medical schools must have an ECFMG certificate and have passed USMLE Parts I and II. All trainees must successfully complete USMLE Step III prior to completion of the PGY-2 training year. Applications must be received by November 1 for appointments beginning July 1st of the following year.
