August 2021 | Sun City Anthem | 5 Sun City Anthem Chief Operating Board of Directors Officer Report

Summer is here and the heat is on! We hope you are staying cool and getting back to some of your pre- COVID routine. The centers are starting to get a bit busier with our clubs and groups returning, however some are still not comfortable coming back yet. Recently, I have been asked a few important questions related to our operations during COVID-19: When will our center hours return to what they were pre-COVID? Due to current job market conditions, we are experiencing a shortage of willing and able staff. We are unable to find quality candidates for new hires. Our existing staff has re-evaluated their priorities and are making decisions based on L to R: President, Stephen Anderson; Vice President, Paul Perlstein; their current life priorities. Most are not comfortable extending Treasurer, Richard Pope; Secretary, Wendy Linow L to R: Directors, Brian Donahue, Forrest Quinn and Barry Rubinson shifts, and/or arriving at 4:30 a.m. or leaving at 10:15 p.m. The usage for Anthem Center during the hours of 5 a.m. to 6 a.m. Board member photos are provided by Dean Hickey. and 9 p.m. to 10 p.m. is low, historically, and the activities/clubs that used the facility during the afore-mentioned hours have SUN CITY ANTHEM adjusted to the new building schedule. In this light, we will be keeping our existing operating hours in all centers: 6 a.m. to 9 BOARD OF DIRECTORS p.m., seven days per week, for the foreseeable future. President Stephen Anderson Why aren’t you checking vaccination cards for those who enter [email protected] the buildings? I have heard that residents who have not been vaccinated are coming to the centers without wearing a mask. All Vice President Paul Perlstein rooms are at 100% capacity, with no masks or social distancing [email protected] required, if you have been fully vaccinated. If you have not Treasurer Richard Pope been vaccinated, please continue to wear your mask to protect yourself and others, as was the intent of the guidelines. We have [email protected] successfully been able to stay open by following the local, state, Secretary Wendy Linow and federal directives. We intend to follow their lead, and will [email protected] take their guidance. If checking vaccination cards becomes a requirement, then we will react accordingly. In the meantime, Director Brian Donahue please be kind and respect one another. Wear a mask if you have [email protected] not been vaccinated.

Director Forrest Quinn Why aren’t you closing the centers as the number of [email protected] COVID-19 cases has spiked in the Las Vegas area? Again, we will follow the directives from local, state, and federal Director Barry Rubinson jurisdictions. [email protected] We can continue to stay safe by taking some simple precautions, such as physical distancing, wearing a mask if not vaccinated, Membership Office Back in Anthem Center keeping rooms well ventilated, avoiding crowds, cleaning your hands, and coughing into a bent elbow or tissue. I chose to run it just as he submitted it, because I think he stated his concern very well! “I just finished exercise walking in my neighborhood, and I’m really getting tired of walking into the street to get around people’s bulk pick-up trash they have put all over the sidewalks making me (and everyone else) walk into the street to get around it. Additionally, on Tuesdays, some people put their trash and recycle containers right in the middle of the sidewalks again forcing us to walk around them. Sidewalks are for walking. NOT trash cans and bulk trash put out for pick-up; all of these things should be put on the street side of the curb. In fact, there is a Henderson ordinance against blocking sidewalks. Can you please put an article in the Spirit magazine telling people to keep ALL trash collection stuff of the sidewalks?” The following is a portion of the City Ordinance requiring which may reasonably constitute a hazard to a pedestrian. IVA OLUNTEERS

I was just reviewing a message from our Neighborhood Watch Program (Yes, I’m a Block Captain!), and wasV absolutely thrilledV to learn that we have 742 new residents in the first half of 2021! Most of us know that they moved here for many of the same reasons each of us did. They moved here for the great location, beautiful homes, well maintained community centers, and a plentiful choice of activities and clubs. SCA couldn’t maintain our top-notch status without the help of our paid staff, and most of all, without all the volunteers who step up to assist our Board of Directors in the five standing committees and ad hoc task forces. Also, we have the five service groups that are the backbone of our community – SCA-TV, Emergency Preparedness Service Group, Neighborhood Watch Program, Community Service Group and Community Patrol. All the committees and service groups are filled with residents just like you and me. They don’t require a lot of time, and most will train you to do whatever role in which you are interested. The Arts and Crafts Club, which meets in Independence Center, Susan Johnson and Niki DeMeulemeester consists of 15 shared interest groups with activity levels ranging from beginner to advanced. One annual membership fee of $15 entitles a member to participate in any or all of the workshops. The list of workshops and contacts is posted in our room, and a copy of the schedule is available there and on our website, SCA- ACC.com. Please visit our display cabinets in the Anthem Center fitness area, and Independence and Liberty Centers, to see examples of our work. Displays, changed frequently, are available for your enjoyment, inspiration, and sometimes for purchase. Our display cases are intended to showcase all aspects of the Arts and Crafts Club, with the goal of enticing new members. Direct inquiries about the display cases to Joan Roth, (702) 421-5646, or [email protected]. The Beadweaving group is a very friendly and lively bunch that meet weekly to create beaded jewelry, ornaments and other shiny things, and to enjoy the camaraderie and creativity of sharing with fellow members. Newcomers are welcomed throughout the year, and an inexpensive starter kit is available for those new to beading, as well as individualized initial instruction Creations from Terri Viotto and Mary Ann Thyken and assistance. Magnifiers and special lights help everyone participate. As we return to the post-COVID-19 world, we will once again be teaching new patterns and techniques to interested members each month. We also hope to soon relaunch our regular Bead Runs, where members carpool to local bead stores to shop for supplies, and then go to lunch together. Later this year, we also plan to reinstitute our monthly Beaders’ Night Out, which is typically either a pot luck at Liberty Center or a happy hour meet-up at a local restaurant. These are great opportunities to make new Beadweaving Group friends and get to know your fellow crafters. 38 | Sun City Anthem | August 2021 Beading is wearable art, and it’s a portable craft that can be done just about anywhere - at home, at a workshop, or while traveling. As Bryan Stevenson, an attorney and founder of the Equal Justice Initiative (EJI) believes, “The past must be acknowledged and commemorated with memorials and monuments that create space for the restorative power of truth telling.” Next on our roster of speakers was Michael Naft, our District A County Commissioner. Some of the topics Michael discussed were water issues, using the Allegiant Stadium optimally, the building of a pedestrian bridge, and the Sunridge Heights Project, which is the possibility of building a traffic tunnel beneath the Henderson airport to expedite traffic flow. HAND AND FOOT You get two “hands” in our game. It’s almost like cheating! Actually, Hand and Foot gives you a second chance to score; after you play all the cards in your first hand, you pick up and play the second (your “foot”). With the help of your partner, you compete against another duo and play to the finish! Seven identical cards are “booked”, and if there are no wild cards, they’re pure (red) and count 500 points. With two or less wild cards, they’re dirty or black, and count 300 points. Unlike Canasta, red threes count against you (100 points each!) when you add up the final points. Charleston is approximately 12,000 feet above sea level. Yet, eons ago, this was the ocean floor, as evidenced by marine fossils that can still be found today on the mountain. The peak is the highest in Southern Nevada, and the eighth-highest peak in the state. Our club’s first expedition to the peak was in 1999, but many of those hikers had been there previously. In approximately 2005, club member Sherman Uchill created the “Charleston Challenge” for our club. This was to be an annual special event for which members would train. Steve Lynch was put in charge of the training program, and an amazing 48 club members reached the peak that year. In honor of Sherman, who passed away several years ago, Steve Lynch has continued the tradition of this special event, which is always held on the summer solstice to give hikers maximum daylight to complete this extremely strenuous hike of approximately 18 miles and 5,000 feet of elevation gain. Steve derives great joy from encouraging and helping members challenge themselves, train, complete, and enjoy this fabulous experience. Steve estimates he has been to Mt. Charleston Peak more than 500 times, including 12 times last year alone! He knows roughly a dozen additional routes, beyond the traditional South Loop and North Loop Trails, to the peak, and is always looking to share these with our more adventurous members. Last year, Steve reached the peak on his 80th birthday!

The trio of directors, Margaret Carbaugh, Bill Hoover, and Kathi Sarkin, had been talking about this project for several years. With the pandemic keeping us out of Freedom Hall, we aimed our sights on doing an outdoor show on the North Lawn. The video-audition process began in early June 2020, with plans to do the show in October. However, we didn’t anticipate

And it was all worth it! The dancers’ journey from concept to performance was filled with creativity and fun. Through every rehearsal in parking lots, the ‘dance’ room, Freedom Hall, and the North Lawn stage, thirteen dedicated and hard-working dancers found the magic behind 5, 6, 7, 8! We love spending time together, sharing ideas, and developing choreography to support our show concept. Once again, Linda Peluso, Marybeth Lohman, and our lead choreographer, Kathi Sarkin, designed dances which delighted our audience. Of course, Grace Liang’s amazing costume skills gave us dazzling outfits. We were stunned and thrilled with the crowd that came out to see us – and what an incredible audience they were! We were all so happy to be able to provide an evening of entertainment – and a break from what has been a stressful time for everyone. If you didn’t get the chance to see the show, we are now planning a reprise in Freedom Hall this fall. Keep reading the Spirit for details! Spotlight gives each performer an opportunity to stretch and grow, discover and learn from each other, and that is something special. Now, on to the next show!
