The project is financed by the German Foundation for Peace Research and is located at the Institute for Development and Peace at the University of Duisburg-Essen. The project aims at explaining different levels of youth violence in two post-war societies whose processes of war termination are regarded as successful. However, both societies face serious problems of post-war development that are closely related to the experiences of war and war termination. While Cambodia’s democratisation process is considered more or less as a failure, Guatemala suffers from levels of violence higher than during most of the war. -

The Healthcare Provider’s Guide to Islamic Religious Practices About CAIR The Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) is the largest American Muslim civil rights and advocacy organization in the United States. Its mission is to enhance understanding of Islam, protect civil rights, promote justice, and empower American Muslims. CAIR-California is the organization’s largest and oldest chapter, with offices in the Greater Los Angeles Area, the Sacramento Valley, San Diego, and the San Francisco Bay Area. According to demographers, Islam is the world’s second largest faith, with more than 1.6 billion adherents worldwide. It is the fastest-growing religion in the U.S., with one of the most diverse and dynamic communities, representing a variety of ethnic backgrounds, languages, and nationalities. Muslims are adding a new factor in the increasingly diverse character of patients in the health care system. The information in this booklet is designed to assist health care providers in developing policies and procedures aimed at the delivery of culturally competent patient care and to serve as a guide for the accommodation of the sincerely-held religious beliefs of some Muslim patients. It is intended as a general outline of religious practices and beliefs; individual applications of these observances may vary. Bibliography CHAPTER 1: Introduction: Evangelism or Fundamentalism? Religion has been a major component in routine life in South Asia for a considerable period of time.Similarly, it has also been a major player in politics and conflict formation as well as a source for mass mobilization for socio-culturally and politically motivated millenarian or revivalist movements in the region. In India, a sense of distrust between Hindus and Muslims has become steadily institutionalized since the partition. The primaryreason for the creation of Bangladesh and Pakistan had been the religious differences between the populations in these areas and what constitutes India today.In Sri Lanka, Hinduism and Buddhism are primary markers in the cultural and ethnic identities of Sinhalas and Tamils.Such differences in identities play a major role in perpetuating the on going ethnic conflict in Sri Lanka, particularly due to the manner in which such identities areperceived and represented in popular belief and conservative academic discourse.While the mere differences in cultural identities were not the cause of the inter-ethnic conflict in Sri Lanka, the religious differences between the two groups have been manifestly used by nationalistand chauvinist politicians among both groups for sectarian purposes.
