Sport High Peak School & Partnership Winter 2016 High Peak Sports Awards This year saw High Peak Borough Council supporting the part- nership by allocating us time at the annual sports awards to highlight some of the great work that’s going on across the area. The 10 Gold School Game Mark Schools were invited along to the celebration evening – many schools brought along their chil- dren and they all felt extremely special to be there. In the lead up to handing each school their framed certificate on stage the audience had the opportunity to see the introductory video that demonstrated all that they’ve achieved this last year – you can view it too at: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=elVPKHogOjo&t=103s It was a double celebration with the second part of our section devoted to our Young Ambassadors from all the Secondary Schools across the area. We also introduced the group attending with another video which showed the journey our young leaders can take starting in primary schools as part of our Aspire2b Mini Leader Training and Change for Life Champions through to the Secondary Leadership Academy, School Sport Organising Committees and the pinnacle – Young Ambassadors. The video will be out Sue Crookes from Tintwis- on YouTube very soon. tle Primary winning Adult Volunteer of the Year. We’re very fortunate to work with amazing schools that support their young leaders. This was more than demonstrated by two of our ambassadors that spoke to the audi- ence about their experiences – well done to both Jack Bentley from Community School and Rohan O’Neill from St Philip Howard Voluntary Academy. They talked how their experiences had given confidence to try new things and developed skills for a future career but that it had also developed a passion to get young people active. Most of our competitions are supported by local sports clubs and we thanked them too as many of our partner clubs were in attendance. It must also be said that we’d like to extend our thanks too to the Secondary Schools that host many of the competi- tions – without such a collaborative approach then these opportunities just wouldn’t happen. Sharing Good Practice—Health & Wellbeing

On Thursday 10th November 2016 Fairfield Junior School held a Health and Wellbeing workshop. All families were invited to join in a range of sports activities, food tasting and smoothie making sessions, dental health and oral hygiene. Lots of information was given out on the day to all that attended regarding healthy lifestyles and raising awareness of health and wellbeing.

A walking group was formed from this workshop, where the parents meet twice a week. The after- noon was hugely successful with over 50 families attending, saying how useful and enjoyable the afternoon was. Many parents were shocked to find out how many cubes of sugar were in everyday food and drinks.—Nathan Neequaye—PLT FEJS Sharing Good Practice— Miles & Smiles

BURBAGE PRIMARY SCHOOL The children, staff and parents of Burbage Primary School in Buxton are excited about their new healthy lifestyles initiative, ‘The Daily Mile’. Members of the school community will be encouraged to walk, jog or run a mile every day at school from 8:30am. Children will also have the option of completing their daily mile during the school day. As an incentive, the children will record their achievements and progress on specially made ‘Daily Mile Passports’ upon which the children tick off each mile they complete and aim for Olympic athletes along the way. Chris Hill, the school sports coach and PE leader has set the initiative up based on an idea originating in Scotland. Anthony Tierney, Headteacher of Burbage Primary, hopes that the scheme will be a fun and inspiring way of promoting healthy and active lifestyles in the community. The Daily Mile is open to everyone at the school and started in September. NEW MILLS PRIMARY SCHOOL

Children from New Mills Primary School have been running the Daily Mile now for 6 months. We are one of 1000 schools nationally who have adopted this simple initiative to increase the amount of physical activity which children have access to every day. We run our mile before school begins every morning and record the number of miles we have run on a blackboard in the school foyer so that all children can see how far we have collectively run that week.

We run our mile in all weathers and the enthusiasm for the scheme amongst the children has gone from strength to strength. The ‘Mile’ has in fact taken on a life of its own – children don’t have to be chased out of their classrooms and in fact are very disappointed when the Town Hall clock strikes 9am and we all have to go back inside! The school are now starting to see the benefits which the Daily Mile can bring in the long term – children are fitter, stronger have more stamina and are get- ting used to being outside in all weathers. Staff are also seeing an increase in the physical and emotional resilience shown by a number of children and we have also seen a marked reduction in lateness. Our Daily Mile has become a social event where children run and talk about all kinds of things from the Brexit to the US election result! Recently we have had a number of children running and singing Christmas carols in preparation for the upcoming Christmas concerts. Last week we launched our Daily Mile ‘Buddy’ scheme where children from the Juniors run with those in the infants, supporting, en- couraging and coaching them to running further every day. This initia- tive will give children the chance to develop their Leadership skills and is part of a wider Sports Leadership Strategy which the school have developed. As part of the school fundraising efforts for Children in Need, a group of Year 6 students organised extra Daily Mile ses- sions during lunch times – the target was to run over 200 miles in the week. Thanks to their efforts and the enthusiasm of the rest of the children, we ran 268 miles in 5 days – a fantastic effort raising. The new criteria for 2016/17 School Games Mark has not yet been set but it’s likely a pre- requisite will be that every school fills in a health check in order to apply online. We’ll send more details through on this as soon as they arrive.

The pennants and plaques for 2015/16 have all now arrived at the office. We will be in touch and arrange delivery over the next few days leading up to Christmas.

Christmas Boccia and Swimming Festivals

We’ve had two amazing inclusive events this December. The first was our Boccia festival held at Fairfield Centre, with 19 teams from 10 different schools taking part. The winning schools were 1st Burbage Primary School, 2nd Chapel High School and in joint 3rd place Buxton Juniors and Fairfield Juniors. Plenty of other activities were on offer too, including fluffy snowball fights, curling, quoits and parachute games. Our second event was the Christmas Swimming Spectacular held at Buxton Pool with 7 different schools taking part. The children enjoyed a fun filled afternoon with fun races and a few special visi- tors too! The children’s favourite part is always the finale when the pool is filled with floats, balls and woggles and Christmas music fills the air. Burbage Primary Chapel High School—2nd place School—1st place Childhood Obesity Strategy—Impact on Primarys

As we know obesity is really big in the news. It's been proven that daily physical activity helps tackle inflammation in our cells consequently inactivity increases inflammation which leads to long term illnesses. Physical activity releases a protein called myokines into every cell of our bodies thus dampening the inflammation - this boosts the immune system and connects more neurones together to increase brain power, concentration, creativity and memory.

That's why it's so important for our schools to ensure we keep all our children active - it'll help the learning process.

The Childhood Obesity Strategy states that "at least 30 minutes physical activity should be delivered in every school every day through PE, extra curricular clubs, active Flame the Fox says: lessons or other sport and physical activity events “Flip it don’t sip it!!” with the remaining 30 minutes supported by parents and carers outside of school time". From September 2017 the government will introduce a new voluntary healthy rating scheme for primary schools to recognise and encourage contribution to preventing obesity by helping children to eat better and move more. This scheme will be taken into account during inspections and is also something the partnership can support you with – by creating active classroom, CPD opportunities, evidence gathering, direct visits, completing necessary applications and more.

Y3/4 Girls Football Festival #wecanplay

As part of the Football Association Girls Football Week - Glossop North End Juniors ran a Girls Football Festival for Yrs 3/4 girls on 14 October.

In total 64 girls from local schools took part in various drills and skills activities. The aim of the afternoon was, first and foremost, to have fun but also to learn some basics about the game and be in- troduced to some of the coaches at the club. Hopefully we'll see lots more girls taking part in the future.

We also had a special visit from Flame the Fox!!

All children received 2 certificates and a football wristband whilst 6 girls were chosen for displaying passion, determination and team- work during the afternoon - they received a separate certificate and key-ring.

Thanks to Glossopdale Community College for hosting. They also hosted the HP Mini Soccer Finals in October too along with GNE Juniors who ran the competition on our behalf. #WECANPLAY Page 8 Great First Term for Chapel High Students

The publication of the Derbyshire School Sports Association Champion- ship Table for secondary schools saw Chapel sitting second in Derbyshire for county level competition. The championship aggregates results across a wide range of sports and we were thrilled to be in second place. This reflects both the enthusiasm and talent of our students but is also a well -deserved acknowledgement of the hard work and support of so many colleagues who give up their time to support our sports clubs. Liz Milne—CHS

Chapel High Schools highlights this term are: Futsal: Winners of the year 7 and year 11 High Peak boys competition and runners up in the Year 7 girls Netball: Year 9 team finished a creditable 12th in a very high standard Derbyshire Championships at School. Table Tennis: The under 13 boys and under 16 girls won the High Peak Championships and finished 3rd and 4th respectively in the county final at Springwell School. Cross Country: The four school teams performed well in the county competition at Mount St Marys but the intermediate boys were the stars winning this heat, finishing 2nd in the regional final and became the first Chapel team to qualify for a National Schools team final. They thoroughly enjoyed the final at Formby; a super day with over 550 runners over a testing course that took you through woodland and sand dunes by the sea. Most of the team have another year in this age group so it bodes very well for next year. Liz Milne—CHS

The September leadership day represents the pinnacle of the training that the partnership puts on for the members of the Leadership Academy. Knowing how ambitious the pupils of the High Peak are, providing NGB recognised sports specific training prepares the leaders to take on UKCC level 1 courses as soon as they turn 16. The courses are an important step in the development of strategic, confident leaders in their respective sports.

Reflecting back we’ve had another successful year – again being in the top 10% performing partnerships nationally, we’ve engaged more children and young people in PE, School Sport and Physical Activity Opportunities, trained more leaders and have over 250 secondary school pupils in our Aspire2b Leadership Academy, worked with more sports clubs to enhance school/club links, offered more teacher training opportunities and 30 schools have achieved Bronze, Silver or Gold School Games Mark.

Here in the office – we’re extremely proud to be part of all these positive achievements and we truly hope it’s helped to inspire your students, but - before I wax lyrical too much - there are a couple of things I need to update you on….

Firstly Bikeability – although we’ve been extremely happy with our provider, DCC Financial Regula- tions stipulated that the programme had to go out to tender – we’re still going through the process and bikeability along with other cycling related initiatives will be offered out to all schools in the new year – thank you for your patience.

The next is how we look at the affiliation structure going forward in these challenging times to enable us to continue to provide an excellent service. Working with our management group, and recognis- ing that in comparison to other partnerships, and what they offer, HPSSP is the cheapest affiliation by far, we needed to re-address this to enable survival longer term. A letter with further explanations will be going out in the next few days but in essence the structure will be as follows:

If you are an infant school: 1 payment of £200 plus £2 per pupil; if you are a junior school: 1 payment of £300 plus £3 per pupil and if you are a primary school: 1 payment of £200 plus £2 per pupil for KS1 pupils plus 1 payment of £300 plus £3 per pupil for KS2 pupils.

And finally, as the Christmas period is well and truly upon us – ‘Team HPSSP’ would like to wish you an amazing seasonal break and a very happy & healthy New Year and look forward to seeing you to start it all again in 2017!
