When a person wants to use living language methods to learn a language, one is required to make some choices about what kind of pronunciation system to use. As long as students only need to write Greek or to look at Greek on a printed page, the pronunciation system is not a very important issue. As soon as students set their sights on a higher goal and want to include language learning methodologies that will lead to a fluent control of the language, they must come to grips with the need to include audio and oral material in a program. And audio material for an ancient language means that decisions must be made about the kind of pronunciation system to be used. Principles Governing the Pronunciation in this Course # 1. The pronunciation system is primarily intended for persons wishing to learn Koiné Greek, the general Greek dialect used from the third century before the Common Era (BCE) to the fourth century of the Common Era (CE). In particular, the focus is on the Koiné Greek of what is historically the Roman period in the land of Israel, 63 BCE to 325 CE. # 2. The pronunciation should preserve the same significant sound distinctions that were used in the Roman period. This means that the pronunciation system should be phonemic. This term will be explained below. # 3. The pronunciation system should, as far as practical, be historical. -

It has also been the subject of a controversy about the ancestry of its population. In a theory hotly debated by scholars for over 170 years, the German historian Jacob Philipp Fallmerayer proposed that the medieval Peloponneseans were totally extinguished by Slavic and Avar invaders and replaced by Slavic settlers during the 6th century CE. Here we use 2.5 million single-nucleotide polymorphisms to investigate the genetic structure of Peloponnesean populations in a sample of 241 individuals originating from all districts of the peninsula and to examine predictions of the theory of replacement of the medieval Peloponneseans by Slavs. We find considerable heterogeneity of Peloponnesean populations exemplified by genetically distinct subpopulations and by gene flow gradients within Peloponnese. By principal component analysis (PCA) and ADMIXTURE analysis the Peloponneseans are clearly distinguishable from the populations of the Slavic homeland and are very similar to Sicilians and Italians. Using a novel method of quantitative analysis of ADMIXTURE output we find that the Slavic ancestry of Peloponnesean subpopulations ranges from 0.2 to 14.4%. -

As a result, the economy continues to shrink, which has direct repercussions on the level of private and public consumption as well as on the level government's functions. The present paper attempts to record and depict spatially the evolution of the per capita public spending of the central government on regional services. The specific category of public spending represents a measure of relative welfare as well as a measure of regional development. For the purposes of the research we applied analytical methods such as descriptive statistics and we used specialized mapping analysis programs and geographical information systems (GIS). The evolution over time is observed on the basis of the annual percentage changes of per capita spending. The period of analysis is 2008-2013 and it includes years before the manifestation of the economic crisis as well as the years of the crisis' peak. The thematic maps that were constructed on the basis of the data clearly demonstrate that government spending on the regions was dramatically reduced during the crisis while the period during which the tightening of fiscal policy had a direct impact on the regions stands out. -

For many decades now, Greece has invested a lot in tourism which can undoubtedly be considered the country’s most valuable asset and “heavy industry”. The country is gifted with a rich and diverse history, represented by a variety of cultural heritage sites which create an ideal setting for this particular type of tourism. Moreover, the variations in Greece’s landscape, cultural tradition and agricultural activity favor the development and promotion of most types of alternative types of tourism, such as agro-tourism, religious, sports and medicinal tourism. However, according to quantitative data from the Hellenic Statistical Authority, despite the large number of visitors recorded in state-run cultural heritage sites every year, the distribution pattern of visitors presents large variations per prefecture. A careful examination of this data shows that tourist flows tend to concentrate in certain prefectures, while others enjoy little to no visitor preference. The main factors behind this phenomenon include the number and importance of cultural heritage sites and the state of local and national infrastructure, which determines the accessibility of sites. An effective analysis of these deficiencies is vital in order to determine solutions in order to encourage the flow of visitors to the more “neglected” areas. The present thesis attempts an in-depth analysis of cultural tourism in Greece and the factors affecting it. -

These common weeds have become increasingly relevant as triggers of allergy in the last few years, as they are able to rapidly colonize salty and arid soils in extensive desert areas. The genera Chenopodium, Salsola, and Amaranthus are the major sources of pollinosis from the Amaranthaceae family in southern Europe, western United States, and semidesert areas of Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, and Iran. In Spain, Salsola kali is one of the most relevant causes of pollinosis, together with olive and grasses. To date, 9 Amaranthaceae pollen allergens from Chenopodium album, Salsola kali, and Amaranthus retroflexus have been described and are listed in the International Union of Immunological Societies allergen nomenclature database. The major allergens of Amaranthaceae pollen belong to the pectin methylesterase, Ole e 1–like, and profilin panallergen families, whereas the minor allergens belong to the cobalamin- independent methionine synthase and polcalcin panallergen families. These relevant allergens have been characterized physicochemically, and immunologically at different levels. Recombinant forms, allergenic fusion recombinant proteins, and hypoallergenic derivatives of these allergens have been expressed in bacteria and yeast and compared with their natural proteins from pollen. In this review, we provide an extensive overview of Amaranthaceae pollen allergens, focusing on their physicochemical, and immunological properties and on their clinical significance in allergic patients. -

Monitoring geophysical activity from Space, in the framework of BEYOND Center of Excellence Ioannis Papoutsis1, Christina Psychogyiou1, Nikos Svigkas1, Maria Kaskara1, Charalampos Kontoes1, Athanassios Ganas2, Vassilis Karastathis2, George Balasis1, Aggeliki Barberopoulou1 Institute of Astronomy, Astrophysics, Space Applications & Remote Sensing, National Observatory of Athens Institute of Geodynamics, National Observatory of Athens A major objective of BEYOND Centre of Excellence is the operational monitoring of geohazards in Southeastern Europe. BEYOND primarily builds upon state-of-the-art optical remote sensing technologies and differential interferometry techniques. The resulting products are integrated with in-situ observations from the National Seismological Network, and the NOANET GPS network established at the National Observatory of Athens, to monitor the geodetic activity in Greece and beyond, interpret geophysical phenomena, assess and map damages after catastrophic events. Additionally, the ENIGMA magnetometer network is used in an attempt to address the issue of earthquake predictability by studying electromagnetic signals attributed to the coupled lithosphere-atmosphere-ionosphere system as one of the most promising potential pre-seismic transients. Characteristic examples of services offered in the framework of BEYOND will be highlighted, to address different phenomena and processes in Greece. Three thematic pillar services are offered on a systematic basis, namely ground deformation estimation following catastrophic earthquakes, time-series analysis for mapping ground velocity patterns and signals in large scale and damage assessment using UAV technology for prompt response during or immediately after a crisis. Persistent scatterer techniques are employed for a number of test sites. Firstly we discuss the 2011-2012 volcanic unrest in Santorini volcano. Using Envisat data, up to 15 cm/yr line- of-sight uplift was observed in the highly touristic villages of Fira and Imerovigli. -

Under average meteorological conditions, the island is water-sufficient (969 mm precipitation; theoretical water potential 3284 hm3; and total water use 610 hm3). Agriculture is by far the greatest user of water (78% of total water use), followed by domestic use (21%). Despite the high average water availability, water scarcity events commonly occur, particularly in the eastern-south part of the island, driven by local climatic conditions and seasonal or geographical mismatches between water availability and demand. -

Some clean raffia palm fibres were treated with 10% NaOH, and ground. The ground treated and untreated fibres were incorporated into the ortho unsaturated polyester resin. The treated and the untreated fibre composites samples were subjected to tensile tests according to ASTM D638 using instron model 3369. The microhardness test was done by forcing a diamond cone indenter into the surface of the hard specimen, to create an indentation. The significant findings of the results showed that alkali treatment improved the microhardness and extension at break at all fibre loads, better than the untreated fibre composites, with the highest values at 20% (14.40 and 3.47mm for microhardness and extension at break respectively). Tensile strength, tensile strain and modulus of elasticity also improved for alkali treated fibre composites, except in 5% and 20% for tensile strength, 15% for tensile strain, and 15% and 20% for modulus of elasticity, compared to the corresponding fibre loads of untreated fibre composites. JPR Men of the Gun and Men of the State: Military Entrepreneurship in the Shadow of the Greek Civil War (1946–1949) Spyros Tsoutsoumpis Abstract: The article explores the intersection between paramilitarism, organized crime, and nation-building during the Greek Civil War. Nation-building has been described in terms of a centralized state extending its writ through a process of modernisation of institutions and monopolisation of violence. Accordingly, the presence and contribution of private actors has been a sign of and a contributive factor to state-weakness. This article demonstrates a more nuanced image wherein nation-building was characterised by pervasive accommodations between, and interlacing of, state and non-state violence. This approach problematises divisions between legal (state-sanctioned) and illegal (private) violence in the making of the modern nation state and sheds new light into the complex way in which the ‘men of the gun’ interacted with the ‘men of the state’ in this process, and how these alliances impacted the nation-building process at the local and national levels. Of interest this week at Beal... Russian thistle Salsola kali Family: the Goosefoot family, Chenopodiaceae Also called tumbleweed, prickly saltwort, and windwitch W. J. Beal Botanical Garden The genus name Salsola means ‘salted’ in Latin. This alludes to the fact that many spe- cies of Salsola are salt-loving or halophytic in their preferences. Our species, Salsola kali is one such salt tolerating species. In many parts of the Midwest, Russian thistle is best established along roads that are salted during the winter. This creates a belt of territory along the roadside that is a somewhat halophytic environment. Tumbleweed is a cultural and botanical icon of the American West. Until late in the nineteenth century, the term ‘tumbleweed’ usually meant a native plant, Amaranthus alba. This species of amaranth grows into a rounded bushy configuration connected to the ground only where its taproot enters the soil. When this annual weed dies, the weak attachment to the taproot breaks off allowing it to roll, tumbling across the ground distributing its seeds along the way. However, the tumbling habit is in no way unique to the Amaranthus tumbleweed. In 1874, (the year of Winston Churchill’s birth) Russian thistle arrived in South Da- kota, from Russia, as a contaminant of flax seed. Its habit of becoming a tumbleweed allowed it to spread quickly across the arid, alkaline, and often salty soils of the West. Salsola has been the majority stockholder in the U. S. tumbleweed category for many decades. Today it can be seen forming gigantic drifts along fence rows and actually fill- ing small ravines throughout the plains in the late summer and fall.
