I am just back from a fantastic experience in South Korea, and yes, I did step foot in North Korea, being very careful not to upset any of the armed guards at the border! The highlights of the trip were spending an afternoon at Gwangju Primary School where I sat in on an English lesson and was enthusiastically wel- comed by the children, also a visit to the largest Church in the world, witnessing a service with a congregation of around 6,000, quite a sight to behold! I am producing this issue of Rural Roundup battling with jet-lag so please forgive any mistakes which may occur. I would like to wish everyone a Merry Christmas and a Prosperous New Year. This year I will be in sunnier climes. See you in February. Regards Ed.

6 Letter from the Rectory Dear Friends, Chestnuts roasting on an open fire, mistletoe and wine, minced pies, baubles and Santas and decorations galore, everyone frantically seeking the perfect gift – yes, it must be that time of the year – Christmas! Christmas is certainly a time for celebration and it is also a time for salvation, and a time for reconciliation. It's good news and it‟s absolutely free and it's there for everybody! For some odd reason, some believe that to be a Christian means being gloomy or miserable, and that Christians can‟t have fun or be happy or celebrate – well, it‟s just not true! God wants us to be happy and to celebrate and one very good reason to celebrate Christmas comes from Luke 2:10-11 when the angel announced, "I bring you good news of great joy that will be for all the people. Today in the town of David a Saviour has been born to you; he is Christ the Lord." The good news of Christmas is the Gospel, and the message is about the greatest gift of all time. And the gift? That God sent His only Son, Jesus Christ, to be amongst us and to bring great joy and salvation to all who welcome him. The purpose of Christmas is to share this gift and what a perfect opportunity! It's a holiday that focuses on the Saviour of the world. That is why I celebrate Christmas. I love Christmas. It‟s a wonderful time of the year, and it‟s a wonderful story to tell, but please do remember that the only reason that we celebrate Christmas is because we are celebrating the birth of a baby, God‟s son, in the town of Bethlehem some 2000 years ago. And this baby wasn‟t born in a palace or mansion, to come and lord it over everyone, but in a humble stable, where the cattle lived. And the first visitors? The shepherds. Not the high and mighty but the humble and lowly. So during this season‟s festivities, try and make time to remember and to give thanks to God for his very precious gift to us that costs absolutely nothing and truly put “Christ” back into Christmas. Finally, I would like to thank you all for your help and support during the past year and to wish you all a very Happy Christmas and Peaceful New Year. Yours in Christ Cathy HIRE ST JOHN’S (KINGSDOWN) VILLAGE HALL Registered Charity Number 302777

Funeral Sutton by Dover 12th November - David Arthur Morgan

The Christingle Service At St John's Church Kingsdown is on Monday 24th December at 5.30pm It includes a 'Scratch Nativity' so children are invited to come along prepared to take part.

Funday Sunday!

Last month we had a fun and lively pet service, with over 100 people and over 20 pets including two tortoises! The pet competition was popular and we finished with drinks and pizza. Our next service is called ‘Getting Ready for Christmas’ on Sunday 16th December at 11am in St John’s Church Kingsdown.

Help to set up the church Nativity scene. Bring a toy to be part of the scene. e.g. an animal. Help to make model angels and shepherds, and join in the special ‘angel photo project’.

The handbell group will be playing at this service, and there will be mince pies afterwards. Do join the fun!

Safeguard your Christmas goodies from Burglar Bert! Hints and tips from PCSO Garry Faulkner

Just before Christmas each year, there can be an increase in the number of thefts and there have been a few burglaries in the past few months, so I would like to try and make sure that everyone and their possessions are safe. So here are just a few simple steps that we can all take:  Check that windows are shut and doors are locked – even if you are “just popping round the corner”.  Lock sheds - burglars often gain access to open and unlocked sheds and then use the tools to gain entry to houses which are unattended.  Ensure cars are locked. Leave nothing on show in vehicles. If you are shopping lock your items in the boot while you continue shopping.  Chaps, don’t leave wallets in your back pocket and ladies don’t leave your purse on the top of your shopping. Would be pick pockets just love having an easy time stealing your money, especially in crowded areas where you can get jostled!  Leave lights on when you are out, and perhaps a radio - it will reduce the risk of anything happening. Make sure you don’t have to do your Christmas shopping twice!

The Parish Council is delighted with the work that has been completed on Nelson's Seat which is situated up by the windmill. and the Parish Council would recommend a visit to see it. It provides stunning views over the countryside. At the November Parish Council Meeting members discussed a number of issues. Members of the public attended and commented on the amount of dog fouling that was around the parish, and it was suggested that an increase in dog fouling signs may help to decrease this problem. The Parish Council would like to remind dog owners to clean up after their dogs to keep our parish clean and tidy. The Community Warden advised members of the parish to dial 101 if necessary as there have been a few incidents regarding anti social behaviour around the parish. PCSO Garry Faulkner wanted to remind residents to keep properties safe and secure. The Parish Council undertook a three month trial to try and combat the issue of the rabbit holes in the Kingsdown playground. Although the contractor has worked tirelessly to the specification requested, it would appear that the same number of holes are reappearing each month. Therefore the Parish Council are looking at alternative methods to deal with this issue and these will be discussed at the next meeting. Members were satisfied that the boundary set out for the project on the Zetland Arms was adequate and are looking into setting up a meeting with Shepherd Neame to take this further. Members are in the process of looking at village signs for Ringwould and Kingsdown in order to give the villages a focus. After a lengthy discussion and interaction with other parishes, it was decided that Ringwould with Kingsdown would not be looking into a Community Transport Fund for the parish at this time. Councillor Sigrist advised members of the progress of the 20s plenty item, and this has been very well received by residents, and the Parish Council are now considering trying to make this compulsory rather than advisory. This is in the early stages, but will hopefully be an ongoing project for next year. The next meeting of the Ringwould with Kingsdown Parish Council takes place on the 10 December 2012 at 7.30pm at Kingsdown Village Hall. Mrs Katie Amaouche 13 Jill of All Trades BLUEBELLS

16 SECRETARY :- Kathy Erridge Tel: 01304 373 402 Meetings are held at 2.00pm on the second Monday each month (except Aug) at Kingsdown Village Hall, Upper Street or Ringwould Village Hall, Dover Road. Sheila Boyd, the speaker at our November meeting, introduced us to the fascinating background of the love story between Lord Nelson and Lady Emma Hamilton. After the Battle of the Nile, Lord Nelson went into the port of Naples for rest and recovery and there he stayed with the British Ambassador Sir William Hamilton and his wife Lady Emma Hamilton. The couple fell in love and Lord Nelson said that Emma was the love of his life and his soul mate. The story of their love is known to us by his letters to Emma who, despite his request that all letters should be destroyed, kept many that he wrote to her. Sheila Boyd read to us from copies of the letters that she has and we were all enthralled by a part of history of which we now have a greater knowledge. Our next meeting is our Christmas Party on 10th December in Ringwould Village Hall when we hope everyone will enjoy the entertainment. Lisa Souter Happy Birthday to all with Birthdays in December. 11th Mary Fish, 12th Gillian Heath, 18th Barbara Brooker, 21stElizabeth Hughes, 26th Patricia Clarke and in January,12 th Pat Crawford, 21st Mary Read.

Rain and sodden ground has stopped play in the garden for a short while, but that deterred me from making a list as long as my arm of things I want to do out there. We have moved all the water barrels around in order to collect the maximum amount of rain water just in case we are get Mediterranean weather next year. We live in hope !! A few weeks ago whilst rummaging through the Society's archive I came across the following dating from the early 90's. An Elderly Gardener's Letter Just a few lines to say that I'm living, that I'm not almost dead. Though I'm getting more forgetful and mixed up in my head. I've got used to my arthritis, to my dentures I'm resigned. I can cope with bi-focals, but ye gods I miss my mind. Sometimes I can't remember when standing by the shed, If I should be going in for something or putting away instead. And beside my greenhouse so often, my mind full of doubt, Did I come to put a plant away or was it to prick some others out. Oh well! I'll go back indoors, the wife I will not tell I'll have to trust to luck hoping she's forgotten as well. The First meeting in 2013 will be on Monday 28th January with Heather Willis putting a Spotlight on Kent at 7.45pm in hall of Kingsdown and Ringwould C/P School. That just leaves me to wish everyone who reads the Rural Roundup, on behalf of the committee and members, A Very Happy Christmas and a Healthy New Year and don't forget to sow your onion seeds on Boxing Day!!!! 24 From your District Councillor (Steve Manion) A happy Christmas to all our residents. At the end of last year we indicated the challenges ahead, the continuing work on the Local Development Framework and the joined up work on the new waste contract. This year we have seen the waste contract being implemented and the results have been fantastic with recycling rates going past 50% - the best in Kent! With this in mind we also ask residents to consider the opportunities for recycling cards and wrapping paper over the holiday period. There are still challenges facing the council and Finance looms over our every move. The provision of youth services looks set to be an important field of endeavour. Again joint working with Kent County council and other partners looks to be the way forward to deliver even better services while still achieving financial efficiencies. There are still many opportunities to further improve our services to our residents as well as make savings to keep the council‟s finance position viable. We would like to take this opportunity to wish all our residents a Safe Christmas and a prosperous New Year. Yours sincerely, Sue, Paul, Keith, Nick and Steve

Useful date Planning committee, 17th January. This meeting commence at 6pm at the council offices at Whitfield

Here are some common questions and answers about the recycling service What can I put in my recycling bin? All plastic pots, tubs and trays, plastic bottles, glass bottles and jars, drink and food cans and tins, empty aerosols and Tetra packs (cartons). We cannot take plastic bags, plastic film or expanded (foam) polystyrene. Please put these in your residual (non- recyclable) waste bin. Where is everything going to be recycled? All the collected dry recyclables are being taken to a Material Recycling Facility and sorted and sent for reuse. How much did the new bins cost the council? The new bins were paid for by the County Council and the savings are much more than the cost of the new bins. The savings are shared by both as the waste collection authority and Kent County Council as the waste disposal authority. Why do I have to have a bin? The scheme is designed to use wheeled bins to maximise the efficiencies and keep the cost of the service as low as possible. * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * Attention Knitters The Women‟s Institute is always in need of double knitting wool, which is made into blankets and sent via the Sunshine Foundation to the needy. If you have any spare wool please „phone me - I will be happy to come and collect it. Just imagine, that odd ball of wool lurking in your cupboard might contribute to keeping someone warm during the coming months. Thanks June Powles - 01304 362 082 25 Briggs Sam Green Seasoned

26 Letters…………. Dear Doreen, Some time ago you were kind enough to print 'Letter from Romania' as a regular feature in Rural Roundup. I have remained in contact with Mihaela, who wrote those letters, and wonder if these further few words taken from an e-mail forwarded to me today may be of interest to your readers. With best wishes, Margaret......

"Speaking of parks: Nick and I were moved by a scene we saw one week-end, when we came home from our walking. It was almost dark, people got out of the park and went to their homes. In front of us were walking a woman and her son, a little boy, he was about 4. The child was walking beside his mum, crying and asking "Please, let`s go back to the park, I do not want go home yet". But she kept walking, without looking at him, without a word. I was watching and wondered how can she walk like this, without trying to talk to him, to explain to him why they can`t go back to the park. After a while the child ran in front of her, spread his arms, still crying, and tried to stop her. She bent and kissed him then took his hand and kept on walking... It was like this till we arrived at the corner of the street. The traffic light was red, so she and her son, Nick and I and other people stopped and waited. Over the street there was a Mc-Donald`s...and, at that moment, she began to move her hands quickly, showing the Mc-Donald`s, smiling. The little boy began to move his hands too. He stopped crying, and smiled at his mum. When the traffic light was green, they crossed the street and went there, for a treat. They used the sign lan- guage. The woman could not hear and could not talk. That was why she didn`t say anything to her son`s words - because she could not hear them. It was clear that she loved him with all her heart. Nick and I talked about this while going home. There are so many things we take for granted! We have seen how parents who have children who can`t hear and can`t speak try to help them, to offer them a good life, as normal as possible. But we have never thought of children whose parents can`t hear and can`t talk." Mihaela Baies Bucuresti, Romania

From Ripplevale School

We have a problem in that at the top of the footpath that runs alongside Ripplevale School grounds almost every morning we are finding empty bottles of cola littering the area. May we please ask neighbours and local residents to alert us if they see or know anything about this. It has been happening for several months now; it is always the same type of litre cola bottle and can range from 1 or 2 to 5 or 6. We would be interested to know if anyone else in the village is experiencing anything similar. Karen Castle 27

Dear Doreen Thank you very much for the recent items that you have very kindly printed for Save the Children. I would be really grateful if you would be able to print the fol- lowing please ?

Thank you to everyone who supported the recent coffee morning/bring and buy sale in Kingsdown Village Hall in aid of Save the Children. All those who attended were extremely generous and we raised £250 for Save the Children. The Prime Minister has announced that he will be holding a hunger sum- mit in 2013 - a big fillip for the thousands of Save the Children supporters who have joined the Race Against Hunger campaign. Save the Children has no politi- cal allegiance Malnutrition is the silent killer of 2.3 million children each year, yet it is entirely preventable. Thousands of children suffer the long term effects of malnutrition. The chronic form of malnutrition, known as stunting, affects 178 million children - one -third of children under five years old in developing coun- tries. Children who are stunted are shorter than average, thieir brain develop- ment is also affected, which has major implications in life, their schooling and productivity. Save the Children's comprehensive approach to reduce hunger always includes a combined focus on nutrition, people's access to food and how they can earn a living to pay for food. The Race Against Hunger goes on for Save the Children and its supporters. Please go to our website to call on David Cameron to use his G8 presidency to lead the biggest ever push against hunger. www.savethechildren.org.uk Thank you, Sarah Spong (Chair Deal and District Save the Children)

Eat your hearts out Alan Titchmarsh, Joe Swift, Monty Don et al. Kingsdown‟s green fingered “guerrilla gardeners” have been out planting. These stalwart members of KCG were out in force last month to plant daffodil bulbs around the village – along the verges and on the green “triangles” at the top of The Rise and at the bottom of Upper Street.

Hoping that hosts of dancing daffodils will brighten the last drear days of winter and herald the warmth of Spring, KCG invites others to get planting along their verges so that, in years to come, golden streams will be a welcome sight and SAD will stand for Sunshine and Daffodils.

Anthony Downing Memorial .Thanks to support from all across the village, and from Ringwould Alpines, KCG has been able to buy a holm oak and arrange for it to be planted as a memorial to Squadron Leader Downing on the small area of grassland adjacent to the recreation ground and the road from Ringwould. A short memorial service will be held on the site of the oak on Saturday December 22, commencing 11.00 am.
