This, as you see is the 111th edition which means we had 10 years of printed copies and one year on-line. Several ‘Chinese Whispers’ have come my way, asking if and when we do have the issue printed again will there will be the volunteers available to collect and deliver them? This really disappoints me. You will notice that several of our regular contributors are missing in this issue. This is because I hadn’t received copy and I couldn’t wait any longer. I put the closing date with regularity below this piece but obviously, even after more that ten years some people need reminding! I realise that these are strange times and there is not so much going on and I also accept that over the last ten years ways of publicising events and spreading information has changed so much. Am I to assume from this, that I am wasting my time and it is time to cease producing Rural Roundup? I would appreciate your comments. On a brighter note you will see that the WI are organising the Kingsdown & Ringwould ‘Front Gardens in Bloom’ this year, see page 13 for details. It is hoped that residents in both villages will demonstrate community spirit and get gardening. At that meeting it was agreed to hold to Zoom meetings open to all residents so the Council could hear views on the draft Local Plan and feed them into the Council’s response to Dover District Council. Both meetings (held on Tuesday morning 23rd February and on Friday evening 26th February) were well attended. As might be expected there was considerable opposition to the housing proposals at the former Alpines site and at the Woodhill Farm site. There was also opposition to the proposal for housing at Ray’s Bottom in Walmer as this would impact on traffic into and out of Kingsdown as well as interrupting a potential wildlife corridor. The results will be discussed at the 8th March meeting of the Council. Members of the public were urged to make their own representations direct to the District Council as well as via the Parish Council. At the February council meeting, it was agreed to accept in principle a number of suggestions for improving the allotments (permanent plot markers, a prize draw for new water butts or composters, and converting a long-term vacant plot into an area for fruit trees and bushes). Members also agreed to hire a room in Ringwould Village Hall so that filing could be centralised and residents could meet with the Clerk and councillors on an appointment basis. This would help to make the Council more visible and open and would facilitate handovers when clerks change or move. The Council’s new website has just come on stream (www.ringwouldwithkingsdown-pc.gov.uk) and that will make it easier for residents to find out what the Council is doing and also to inform the Council of problems in the parish. The Council can be contacted by email at [email protected]. Cllr Mike Eddy 5 Half Price Carpet Cleaning My name is Perry, and my wife Marina P.R. As I write this I have seen a few early daffodils crushed by the snow and my lovely camellia turned from gorgeous pink to brown sogginess. The snow has gone and it is raining again today. Spring weather forecast for the weekend..? Yes, please! I find it frustrating that our garden is either as dry and dusty as a desert or as soggy and boggy as…um, a bog. So, this is for the March issue. There WILL be lovely daffodils out! And buds on things. You have to love a bud. So much promise in a bud. As a naughty child I used to pick the fat poppy buds off my parents’ plants and peel them apart. They were like a magic trick with layers of red tissue paper compressed inside them. Sorry, Mum and Dad. Eek. I had the temerity to give gardening advice for February. This was temerity because a) I am a mediocre gardener at best and b) we have been thwarted, yes thwarted, by the weather! Gardening advice aplenty is out there, of course. By real experts. The site lies within an area of archaeological potential, in the vicinity of cropmarks possibly dating to the later prehistoric or Roman periods. Other significant archaeological remains are also located in the surrounding landscape. The engineering works comprised the excavation of a foundation trench for a penstock, and the re-profiling of a length of drainage ditch. No archaeological features, deposits or artefact were revealed during the engineering works. Deep excavations were only carried out for the penstock foundation trench where only geological deposits were encountered. Any potential remains present in the vicinity of the drainage ditch were unlikely to be revealed due to the limited nature of the works in that area.

  • Notes on Roman Roads in East Kent Margary
http://kentarchaeology.org.uk/research/archaeologia-cantiana/ Kent Archaeological Society is a registered charity number 223382 © 2017 Kent Archaeological Society NOTES ON ROMAN ROADS IN EAST KENT By IvAN D. MARGARY, F.S.A. THE Roman roads of East Kent are generally so obvious and well known that no further description of them seems necessary. There are, however, a few points at which the line is doubtful or where topographical problems admit of some discussion, and it is in considera- tion of these that the following notes are offered. They are based upon field observation made during a visit of some days to the district in June, 1947. STONE STREET—LYMPNE TO CANTERBURY The very striking directness of this road makes it clear that its purpose was to link Canterbury with the Roman port at Lympne. This was probably situated below the old cliffs, near the hamlet of West Hythe, to which access is given by a convenient combo in the cliffs at that point from Shipway Cross above. The Saxon Shore fort at Stutfall Castle was, of course, a late Roman construction, much later than Stone Street, and was probably connected to West Hythe by a spur road below the cliffs, for access to it from Lympne, directly above, would have been awkward. It is to Shipway Cross and the head of the combe that the main alignment of Stone Street is exactly directed. Although it has now disappeared between the Cross and New Inn Green, there are distinct traces of its scattered stone metalling in the field to the south of the Green, while portions of hedgerows and a footpath mark some parts of its course there.

You will recall that the Council had initially requested a review on council size for ‘around 35’ councillors at its meeting held on 17 May 2017. This initial position has been refined following an Extraordinary Council meeting held on 6 December 2017 and we are now asking that a council size of 32 Members be adopted.

  • Landscape Assessment of Kent 2004
CHILHAM: STOUR VALLEY Location map: CHILHAMCHARACTER AREA DESCRIPTION North of Bilting, the Stour Valley becomes increasingly enclosed. The rolling sides of the valley support large arable fields in the east, while sweeps of parkland belonging to Godmersham Park and Chilham Castle cover most of the western slopes. On either side of the valley, dense woodland dominate the skyline and a number of substantial shaws and plantations on the lower slopes reflect the importance of game cover in this area. On the valley bottom, the river is picked out in places by waterside alders and occasional willows. The railway line is obscured for much of its length by trees. STOUR VALLEY Chilham lies within the larger character area of the Stour Valley within the Kent Downs AONB. The Great Stour is the most easterly of the three rivers cutting through the Downs. Like the Darent and the Medway, it too provided an early access route into the heart of Kent and formed an ancient focus for settlement. Today the Stour Valley is highly valued for the quality of its landscape, especially by the considerable numbers of walkers who follow the Stour Valley Walk or the North Downs Way National Trail. Despite its proximity to both Canterbury and Ashford, the Stour Valley retains a strong rural identity. Enclosed by steep scarps on both sides, with dense woodlands on the upper slopes, the valley is dominated by intensively farmed arable fields interspersed by broad sweeps of mature parkland. Unusually, there are no electricity pylons cluttering the views across the valley. North of Bilting, the river flows through a narrow, pastoral floodplain, dotted with trees such as willow and alder and drained by small ditches.
