Hello everyone, This job as editor seems to make my year fly by. It seems like only yesterday I was writing to you before. I can‟t believe it is the October issue already, it will be Christmas again before we can turn around! You will see on page 37, pictures of some of the sunflowers I have spied on my travels around Kingsdown. Are there any others I should know about? Don‟t forget there is also a junior prize this year so if you are 12 years old or under and have grown some tall sunflowers please give me a call. With my other hat on as treasurer of Kingsdown Village Hall, may I, on behalf of the trustees, congratulate the Kingsdown Pre-school on the fantastic difference they have made to the forecourt. First by winning the Kent Mercury award to lay the new surface and also for all the hard work they have put in weeding and planting to transform the area. Thanks also must go to Vurley Fencing who so kindly replaced the tatty old fence free of charge. Ed.

6 Letter from the Rectory The jaw-dropping achievements of the men and women who have been competing in the Paralympic Games have doubtless left many of us thinking about our own prejudices, abilities and possibilities. And an event like this has the capacity to turn our ideas about disability upside down, when we see what can be achieved because of, not despite, severe physical limitations. 2000 years ago, a disability was viewed as a punishment from God, and disabled people most definitely belonged to an underclass. So when Jesus went about healing the physically disabled, as he so often did, Jesus‟ actions would have enabled the person to be included in society, rather than cast out, and such pragmatism and inclusivity are at the very heart of the message of the Bible and, indeed, Jesus‟ entire ministry. Since Jesus‟ day – and as a result of his ministry – we have seen prejudices about disability turned on their heads, albeit very slowly. In recent years, however, this has reached the point where disabled people, far from being seen as the objects of divine retribution, can and do take their rightful place among the world‟s top athletes, and can regard disability as something positive. But such a radical shift of perspective isn‟t down to words alone. The Bible tells us that if someone is cold and hungry, it‟s not enough to say, “Go in peace; keep warm and eat your fill”, unless you are prepared to clothe and feed that person. In the same way, when Jesus saw women, men or children in need, he responded to their immediate, pressing needs. These actions, I believe, teach us three lessons: The first is that out of his infinite passion, Jesus‟ love is available to everyone, without any presuppositions or any conditions. He is not disconcerted by the handicapped; neither is he prejudiced against those not of his own race or religion. In his presence no one has to conceal his or her handicap, no one has to remain isolated and no one is to be rejected because they are different. Secondly, Jesus knows our real needs. He knows if we need to be healed, or if we should push our boundaries and go beyond our limits. Thirdly, it‟s all very well to have faith, but if it‟s not backed up with our deeds, it‟s like calling ourselves athletes and aspiring to win gold medals without ever getting up out of our chairs to do any training! Jesus knows that people shrink back under indifference, are wounded by prejudice, and are hurt when they are rejected. Prejudice handicaps everyone it touches; it allows fear to dress up as social and religious propriety; it sneaks its way into our communities. It is a killer disease, but it is one that can so easily be eradicated. It is always good to remember that whoever we meet, God has met and first loved them. And one legacy that I hope will stay with us from the Paralym- pics for a very long time is that these Games in particular have shown that we can all achieve so much more than we realise if we embrace our limitations and work with our abilities. ADVENT STUDY GROUPS

Just prior to and after Advent Sunday there will be several Study Groups throughout the Benefice - dates and venues are yet to be decided but will be shown in the November magazine. We will be studying 'What a Gift!', which is an Advent Study resource that looks at the Gifts of the Magi as recorded in Matthew's Gospel and asks the question "What do I bring?" Over 4 weeks we will look at the themes of Gold, Frankincense, Myrrh and Journeying, and their spiritual significance for the Christ child, as within them we begin to hear a whisper of the Easter to come - gold for a king, frankincense for a High Priest and myrrh for sorrow. There will be background material available to all participating and at each session there will be lots of questions to stimulate discussion. Please watch out for further details of a Study Group coming near to you! Norman Gilliland 9 tel: 01304 367 955 mobile: 07974 763 121

10 Kingsdown & Ringwould CEP School Head teacher - Jo Hygate Glen Road, Kingsdown, CT14 8DD Tel: 01304 373 734 Secretary - Email: [email protected]

Everyone is now safely back to school after a relaxing Summer Holiday and raring to start the new academic year. We welcome to Kingsdown and Ringwould CEP School Mr Joe Hewitt, Ms Alison Walters and our new Tiny Tiger children and hope they all thoroughly enjoy their time with us.

Jo Hygate The academic year finished on a high as we celebrated another year of high results in Reading, Writing and Maths across the school. Our sporting success also continued as we won the Summer Olympic Cup and came second in the Deal Schools‟ Swimming Gala.

Many of you will have heard that Kingsdown and Ringwould School is now working in collaboration with Temple CEP School through my role as Executive Head of both schools. I will be dividing my time equally between the two schools and to support this Mr Fletcher will now have no class responsibility- so that he is available to deal with any day to day issues that may arise. With the diminishing role of the Local Authority, collaboration between schools is going to be key in ensuring that schools continue to improve and develop and it is hoped that this partnership will enable us to continue to raise standards, build leadership capacity and share costs. 12 SECRETARY :- Kathy Erridge Tel: 01304 373 402 Meetings are held at 2.00pm on the second Monday each month (except Aug) at Kingsdown Village Hall, Upper Street or Ringwould Village Hall, Dover Road. Our speaker for our September meeting, Tsuyoko Page, had a rapt audience when she demonstrated the art of Origami – paper folding. Tsuyoko came to the UK from Japan in 1968 and had learned this traditional Japanese art from an early age. She showed us how to make paper birds and boxes and one of the birds was a crane. Tsuyoko told us the true story of a girl named Sadako Sasaki who developed leukaemia from the Hiroshima bombing and while in hospital tried to make 1000 paper cranes and this, according to legend, would enable her to make a wish. Her wish was to live. Sadly she died after completing 644 but her family and friends made the remainder, which were buried with her. A statue of her was erected in the Hiroshima Peace Park and now each year thousands of people leave paper cranes near her statue. Tsuyoko gave us a chance to try our hands at origami following a design for a cup which can be done by a 4 year old! Our next meeting will be held at Ringwould Village Hall on 8th October and is our Annual General Meeting. This will be a chance for new members to join and their membership fee for 2013 will include the remainder of this year‟s meetings. * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * Last weekend the Village Show took place and has been deemed a great success. A big thank you must be given to the Committee, Members and volunteers who worked extremely hard to make it such an enjoyable day. Then a big thank you must be given to everyone who came along to exhibit in all but two classes (weather victims!). And what an effort you all made! And what a standard you set! Wonderful! but the best accolade of all must go to the two young men who entered the adult classes to come first and second in the Bread Making class and then one receiving second in the Men only class. Well done! We look forward to seeing them again next year. Considering the weather conditions we have had this year, the committee were pleased to see that there were 214 exhibits this year against 191 last year. Congratulations and thank you. At last the tomatoes are ripening, the runner beans are producing a small amount of my favourite vegetable, the carrots are doing the same, but the caterpillars have managed to eat all my kale leaving behind skeletal sculptures soon to dispatched to the tip! Before we know it, it will be time to put our gardens to bed for the winter. The long nights will be upon us, so let's make the most of this wonderful weather we are having and hope for a long Indian Summer. The next meeting is the 63rd AGM on Monday 29th October in Kingsdown School Hall at 7.45pm. We look forward to seeing many members who might just be treated to cake instead of biscuits. At the October meeting of the Parish Council, Councillors welcomed the new clerk Ka- tie Amaouche who has just joined the Parish Council, taking over from Sarah Spanner. Contact details for Katie are shown on the Parish Council website The first part of the meeting was a public session to discuss the proposed traffic management scheme in Kingsdown, details of which have been displayed on the Parish Council website and the notice board in Kingsdown. Several issues of concern were raised, particularly in relation to the proposed parking restrictions but the weight restriction proposals were felt to be beneficial and residents hoped that these would be a deterrent. The Parish Council will now be responding to Kent Highways and a copy of the response sent will be displayed on the Parish Council website. Cllr Broadley reported back on his meeting with the new owners of The Zetland Arms, Shepherd Neame, with whom he had had some very positive discussions with regard to putting in place screens around waste storage in order to improve the area at the front of the . The September Parish Council meeting was held on 4th September and the following

subjects were brought up for discussion.

1. Local residents are very concerned about the speed of traffic on the lower part of Strakers Hill. It has been suggested that a „slow‟ sign be put on the road. Kent

Highways are to be asked to consider this request.

2.The white road markings in several parts of the Parish badly need repainting particularly in Ashley. Hopefully K.C.C. will sort this out shortly.

3.A lively discussion was held concerning school buses for local children. There has been a change in the way free bus passes are granted for certain schools and as the meeting was getting quite heated it was decided for a debate to be held at our November meeting to talk about the reasons for these changes. This will give our representatives at K.C.C. Transport a chance to tell us the reasons for these changes (could it be something about finance ?????).

4. It is hoped that in the future some of our Roundup deliverers would be able to deliver the Neighbour Hood newsletter at the same time, as it appears that only a small percentage of our residents hear or know about the N.H.W. system.

5. It is very pleasing to see so many of our parishioners at our meetings and we do have a slot when they are invited to talk for up to three minutes about any matters that concern them about the Parish. Our local D.D.C. councillors, Steve Mannion and Nick Kenton, have a good record on attending our meetings and inform us on what is going on at and County Level .

6. We would like to see more of our Police Officers attending but we do understand the constraints that they work under.

7. Our next meeting is on October 2nd at 1930 in the Church Hall in Studdal. Ron Little Let’s be Sociable We are a very friendly group that meet from 10.30 „til 11.45am on the third Tuesday of every month, usually in the Church Hall, Downs Rd, Studdal. 24 Kingsdown Conservation Group

IS THERE ANYBODY THERE ?

Although the smell of slurry permeated the house during the hottest days of this brief summer, and the raucous clarion of the gulls wakes me in the pre-dawn, I would not change living in Kingsdown for the life of a city slicker. Today this feeling was strongly reinforced by the panorama of a brilliant sunrise, the countryside rolling down to the edge of the cliffs and gay wooden beach huts hugging the shoreline. But for how much longer can this way of life continue? Areas of the village could be threatened by more builders‟ blight, so part of KCG‟s remit is to keep a watching brief on planning, although it is important to remember that development which enhances Kingsdown could be beneficial. Also, there are other important aspects of conservation we would like to address, but we need more help from the community if we are to be a progressive and viable organisation. We desperately need a replacement for Carol Harvey who, as KCG‟s Liaison Officer, regularly kept in touch with the National Trust, CPRE, and Natural etc. This is a very important function for the Group and we really do need someone with enthusiasm to take it on to continue Carol‟s success over the past two years. We also need someone to be responsible for sponsorship and fund raising for our various projects. I know that there are some folk, like myself, who hate the idea of joining a committee, but these need not be committee posts, so if you have any interest in how this village should develop yet retain its unique character, please get in touch. Sadly, when views are sought only apathy seems to reign.KCG has received not more than a couple of suggestions for bulb planting sites and is unable to ascertain whether this is due to indifference or dislike of the idea. Perhaps readers of RR could give the Group their views on this and any other matter that they feel is of importance to the village. To whet the appetite, some exciting events are being organised. These include a talk by the Conservation Officer about Kingsdown‟s Conservation Area and also a talk about Dover Harbour - The People‟s Port - and how it affects our community. As yet no dates have been fixed but look out for information in RR and keep your eyes peeled for our posters in the village. There are other treats in store for next year. Mary Lord

28 A Tribute to Squadron Leader Ant Downing RAF To readers of Rural Roundup, the tragic death of Squadron Leader Ant Downing in December last year will need no introduction. I was privileged to be friends with Ant for over ten years and share tales of adventure over many a cup of tea. Initially, our tales were fairly evenly matched, but his soon grew in scale and scope to far outstrip mine, and included a solo crossing of the USA by bicycle, various „Iron Man‟ challenges, and travelling to many weird and wonderful places. His funeral was testament to how many people Ant had touched during his life and, as friends from different circles and stages of his life intermingled, I realised that even the descriptor „remarkable‟ did not do him justice. It wasn‟t long before I thought of doing a long-distance bicycle ride as a tribute to Ant. The idea took shape as a solo tandem ride, the empty seat being the equivalent of a „Missing Man‟ formation flown to honour lost aircrew. Like Ant, I would travel alone, light and unsupported. Kingsdown was the obvious finish-point and I decided to start from Lands End which, although it meant „only‟ around 500 miles of cycling, nicely mirrored Ant‟s west-to-east journey across the USA. Suddenly, in August, I got some time off work. I hadn‟t planned the ride in any detail and decided I would make it up as I went along: the spontaneity and lack of detailed planning were other pleasing symmetries with Ant‟s USA trip. At the famous signpost, the photographer asked me how far it was to Dover. I realised I didn‟t know. “Erm, … can you put it as „450-ish‟?” Readers who have cycled a tandem on their own – perhaps not many! – will know that you get lots of weird looks from passers-by, often accompanied by shouts of “You‟ve lost someone!” In all 477 miles, I never quite worked out the best way to respond to this. “Yes, I have.” “I‟m afraid he died.” “He was killed in Afghanistan.” “That‟s the whole point.” In the end, I found the best way was just to give them a wave. When I stopped there was more time to try to satisfy people‟s curiosity. Some just didn‟t get the „Missing Man‟ idea and looked at me as though they thought I was a bit dim. “But a tandem on your own must be really heavy.” “Yes.” “So why not just do it on a normal bike?” “That‟d be missing the point.” Others thought it a great tribute. Whatever people thought about my sanity, I was blessed with many little kindnesses along the way. I was a bit of a novelty and was rarely short of someone to talk to. I encountered lots of obstacles, the most memorable being getting a heavy tandem and luggage up and down the 58 steps of an unavoidable railway footbridge, but every time I came across a problem, I imagined recounting the tale to Ant and how much we would have laughed, just as we had done at tales of my mountaineering epics. When my spirits needed an extra boost, I had a cup of tea and a Rocky bar, and remembered Ant‟s deep-seated belief that there was nothing which couldn‟t be improved by a cup of tea and a Rocky bar! My journey took me along the South Coast, through beautiful and very hilly countryside. Main roads represented the path of least resistance but did not make for pleasant cycling. I used minor roads as much as possible and 65-mile days involving 2500 feet of ascent were not unusual. The tandem was, of course, much heavier than a road bike, and I had some nerve-wracking moments on steep descents, but watching the miles click past while working my way through six counties was very satisfying. On my final few miles into Kingsdown, it all began to feel surreal: I had no idea what to expect. Ant‟s mum, Masheeda, had assembled a welcome party for me, and my arrival in Kingsdown was all rather emotional. We took the tandem to the churchyard with us. As I knelt by the grave and remembered cups of tea shared with Ant, I felt sure he would have approved of my adventure. As well as being my own personal tribute to Ant, the ride was really rewarding. Yes, 477 miles of cycling on a tandem on my own was hard work, but it‟s amazing how far you can get if you just keep pedalling. On the hills, some of which were fearsome, I just focused on an absolute desire not to be beaten, to keep the wheels turning and not to get off and push. In Ant I had a good example to inspire me.
