2 Hello All, What a joy it is seeing all the care that is being taken with gardens this year, especially the frontages adjacent to the pavements. I look out of my kitchen window across the road from me and see such a pretty sight, primroses, cowslips, bluebells and pansies, along with others I can’t name. I do hope you are all considering opening your gardens to visitors on Sunday 17th July. I’m really looking forward to touring the villages looking at all the different gardens, large, small or even potted ones. Reading the advice this month from Kingsdown Garden Society, I realise that I am guilty of committing a cardinal sin. I've planted out all my tender little plants out already! I have been surprised how many of you have asked after my health. Well, after the minor blip I experienced a short while ago. I am pleased to say I am now fully recovered. The worst part of it was that I couldn’t drive for a month. What a wonderful boost to funds the Friends of Kingsdown Play Park have received, with the news of being awarded £10K from the National Lottery ‘Awards for All’. A good start for them. All the best till next month Doreen

CHRISTIAN AID WEEK this year runs from Sunday 15th May to Saturday 21st May. Please give again as generously as you can to this most worthy of charities, attempting to alleviate the lives of the desperately poor and responding to the many terrible crises around the world. Look out for the Christian Aid envelope through your door during the Week – last year Kingsdown residents contributed the magnificent total of over £900; can we do even better this year? If you would like to be one of our small band of collectors, do contact one of us, Alan or Christine Smith, on 361 452.

We had a very successful end to our spring term at Kingsdown & Ringwould CEP School, amongst all of the usual Easter celebrations. Dance competition Danni Jenner from Dance with Danni has been working extremely hard with training a group of enthusiastic junior children, Jo Hygate for a Kent Dance Competition. They have got through to the Kent Finals, which will be held in Folkestone early April. If successful the team will represent Kent at a national level in Birmingham. Thank you, Danni, for your hard work with the dance team. Deal Learning Alliance Spelling Bee The year 5/6 team won the Deal Learning Alliance Spelling Bee. The team consisting of Paige, Sebastian, William and Elena, successfully competed through a closely fought contest, eventually wining by one point. Congratulations to the team. Swimming Gala On Friday 26th February the swimming team took part in the Dover Schools Swimming Gala. The team did fantastically well with every member coming sixth or above in the results. The team won all the relay events and we also won five individual gold medals. This was a brilliant morning of swimming and I am very pleased to announce that we won the competition. Congratulations to all the swimmers. Jo Hygate

On the 17th April 1986 a peace treaty was signed between the Isles of Scilly and the Kingdom of the Netherlands. For the first time in 335 years the Scillonians could sleep safely in their beds, for as the Ambassador remarked; "It must have been awful to know we could have attacked at any moment!" The 335 Year War (as it is now known) was a bloodless conflict between the Netherlands and the tiny Isles of Scilly which began as far back as 1651 during the English Civil War. Regardless of the specifics, three months later in June 1651 Cromwell's forces under the command of Admiral Robert Black forced the Royalist fleet to surrender and the Isles of Scilly reverted to Parliamentarian control. The Dutch fleet subsequently sailed home, albeit forgetting to declare peace on the poor little Isles of Scilly! It was only in 1985 that a local Scilly historian called Roy Duncan wrote to the Dutch Embassy in London to see if there was any evidence to support the seemingly absurd claim of a 335 year war. To everyone's surprise, the embassy uncovered a series of documents which suggested that the Netherlands and the Islands were, indeed, still at war! A silly example of a ridiculous situation, yet how often do we fall out with each other – whether it is with our neighbour, “friends” or family member? If the conflict continues, how long will it be before we can’t even remember what the disagreement was all about in the first place? Some disagreements continue through the generations, yet to what purpose, when those who originally disagreed are long gone? We look at the news on the TV or the headlines in the newspaper and shake our heads in disbelief at the mayhem of war and conflict, wondering why peace is so difficult to find, and yet we too often have unresolved issues ourselves. Someone once asked Jesus: ‘Teacher, which commandment in the law is the greatest?’ Jesus said to him: “You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your mind.” This is the greatest and first commandment. And the second is like it: “You shall love your neighbour as yourself.” On these two commandments hang all the law and the prophets.” Why not pick up the phone to someone you haven’t contacted for a while, or pop next door and see your neighbour – after all, what have you got to lose? And it could just be the beginning of a wonderful friendship. 26 In the past ten years the number under five dying from preventable causes has fallen by nearly half Great progress has been made but nearly six million children under five die each year. One of the main causes of death is lack of care at birth. The scandal of new born deaths has been the focus of a recent Save the Children Campaign. In 2014, 194 countries signed up to an action-plan to reduce such deaths. The charity also works in this country. In Dover the charity has been recently running a programme “Families and Schools Together” to help give children and their families the support they need to fulfil their potential at school and in life. The next quiz in aid of Save the Children is at the Deal Vic’s Cricket Club CT14 7RQ. 26th May - 7pm for 7.30pm £2 a head, no booking required. Sarah Spong

Sutton discussed numerous topics at the April Parish Council Meeting. Flooding is still a big issue, and KCC member Steve Manion was going to help the Parish look into this matter. Litter on the side of the roads of the Parish was a big concern for residents and the Parish Council are looking into it. The annual Parish Meeting will be held on 24th May 2016 at 7.30pm at the Church Hall. The focus of the meeting will be about a Neighbourhood Watch Scheme and to talk about speed issues in the village. All residents welcome. The next Parish Council Meeting takes place on May 3rd 7.30pm at the Church Hall. Katie Amaouche, Clerk to the Council

31 32 Kingsdown and Ringwould WI Secretary Linda Dalton Email: [email protected] Many of us sat down to a delicious lunch at our April gathering. This is an annual treat for us members, provided for us by our hard-working committee...they never let us down. We had a three course meal of delicious home-made soup (my bowl was rather large, so I had no room for the alternative choice!) This was followed by a cold buffet (an amazing variety of meats and pies) then, wow, we all managed to make room for the yummy puddings! Just to spice things up a bit, our president made us do a quiz to test our knowledge about the history of the WI, each table in competition with the others. I think that is all I want to say about it, since my table nearly (but not quite) got the booby prize! It was a lovely occasion for chat and friendship; thank you to the members of the committee from us ordinary members! We are very much looking forward to our trip to Chelsea Hospital on May 13th. No doubt I shall write about it in next month’s Rural Roundup. Next month we are presented with this year’s resolutions to debate and vote on to inform national WI policy. Subjects this year are diverse, better care for people with dementia while in hospital and about reducing food waste. Resolutions in the past have had a significant influence on government thinking, so it is important that our WI give these issues our careful consideration. Our meeting is on 9th May at 2.0’clock in Kingsdown Village Hall. Do join us! Christine Smith

As I write, the sun is shining and the sky is blue. I have just finished the first coat of Golden Maple anti-slip decking stain. Another coat will be applied later today. I will keep you posted as to its anti-slip properties. The garden needs a touch of T.L.C. but having said that there are strong splashes of colour from the daffodils, narcissi, hellebores, primula candelabra, lungwort, anemones and irises. The Head Gardener is in the greenhouse planting some troughs. Plug plant are now arriving on a regular basis. Here we are in May; summer is on its way but beware of treacherous late frosts. Keep vulnerable plants and new shoots protected at night if frost is forecast. Don’t be tempted to put out tender bedding plants until the middle of the month. Apply mulch while you can still see what you are doing, before the herbaceous growth really takes place. Use your own compost, well rotten horse manure or leaf mould. The soil is warming up making it easier for plants to grow. Don’t forget to add general purpose fertiliser to your shrubs, beds, borders and containers before mulching. Unless you are a Buddhist or pacifist now is the time to wage war on slugs and snails. We will be having a stall at the village May Day Fete on Sunday 1st May promoting the society. We will be handing out sunflower seeds with a pot and compost for children to grow on. It would be lovely if a photograph of the sunflower could be submitted for the Annual Show in August. Our annual plant sale will be held in conjunction with the Garage Safari on Sunday 8th May at the Pantiles, St James Road. We are looking for help with this event. Our speaker at the meeting on 23rd May will be Theresa Ryder to talk about the pros and cons of running a nursery. She will also bring along a few plants to dis- cuss. Should prove interesting. Happy gardening and stay healthy. Bob Perry 33

For the second year running, St. John’s curry evening was a great success, with requests that it takes place on a monthly basis! (Sorry but we can’t oblige!) The three course meal, which was accompanied by Bollywood music, was enjoyed by everyone. We also held a raffle – and my grateful thanks to everyone who so generously gave prizes. My thanks go to the whole team who made the evening possi- ble – but especially to Masheeda who masterminded the whole even- ing and her trusty assistant Sue. In total £670.48 was raised from the entrance tickets, raffle and donations which will go towards the repairs to the church building. Once again, my grateful thanks to everyone who made the evening possible and to those who came along to enjoy the fabulous food. Another curry evening will take next year – so look out for dates and there may be something taking place later in the year – so again, look out for details. Cathy Sigrist

On 12th April Mike Phillips told us about British amphibians and reptiles, namely the common frog, common toad, palmate newt, great crested newt, smooth newt, viviparous lizard, slow worm, adder, grass snake and smooth snake. (The natterjack toad and sand lizard have died out but are being re-introduced). If you would like to encourage these shy creatures then provide ponds, basking spots, food, shelter, hibernation sites and egg-laying sites, which basically means stop tidying up your garden! Another way of helping is to ensure that you report seeing any of these creatures in Kingsdown to the Kent Reptile and Amphibian Group at www.kentarg.org. Watch out for our new footpath map, design by Joe Wall, soon to be available at the village shop. KCG will be represented on the Deal Town Council ‘Goodwins Dredging Investigation Group’. And finally, don’t miss our next illustrated talk: Tuesday 17th May – Butterflies in Kent – a talk by Ade Jupp. It will be held in Kingsdown School. Registration and free wine and nibbles will be from 7:30pm with the talk starting at 8pm. Members £3 and non-members £4. No need to book. Ade is from Butterfly Conservation Kent Group and will describe butterflies found in Kingsdown and how we can ensure they thrive. Annie Martin. Email: [email protected]
