CONGRATULATIONS TO OUR MATRIC CLASS OF 2019 ‘Dreadful’ New Year’s for Kempton SPCA

ByB Heleen Rossouw

Sadly, the festivities on New Year’s Eve resulted in 30 dogs being brought to Kempton Park SPCA. From January 1 to 5, only fi ve of these dogs have been claimed by their owners. The manager of the society, Kira Sparrow, said 37 dogs had been reported missing on various unrelated WhatsApp groups and it would appear that so far only three had been reunited with their owners. “At the SPCA, surprisingly, only fi ve dogs had been reported missing, of which two had been found, and two missing cats, of which one had been found.” When talking about Kempton Park’s fi reworks activity in general on New Year’s Eve, Sparrow said: “It was dreadful. I think it was one of the worst years. One cannot compare it to 2018, since it poured with rain.” With the infl ux of dozens of new ar- rivals over the festive season, the SPCA only has enough food reserves for the next seven days. Any contributions of dog and cat food would be of great help. For more information, contact the Manager of the SPCA in Kempton Park, Kira Sparrow, said 2019’s New Year’s Eve was dreadful. “I was fi ghting for second place and was in the lead by far and that’s when I got this,” said Jacques Dicks (49) as he pointed to his injured right knee. Dicks received three bronze medals for creative weapons, semi-contact and continuous fi ghting respectively at the World Martial Arts Organisa- tion (WMO) World Championships in Blackpool, United Kingdom, early in November. Dicks was unfortunately pushed in the fi ght against his arch-rival in round three and his leg got caught underneath the referee’s chair with only seconds remaining on the clock. “My knee popped out and I was disqualifi ed in those last 20 seconds, which was all I needed to win,” said Dicks. He tore all the ligaments underneath his right kneecap but was still proud of his placements. “I previously said how thrilled I would be to get placed in the top 10 for creative weapons. I nearly placed second in that category. I looked at the videos again and realised I touched the blade, which made me lose points and, sadly, it was the fi rst time I had ever done that. “I originally thought I was fi fth, so when I realised I actually came third, that was as good as gold.” Regarding the tournament overall, Dicks said the intensity of the 2019 championships was pal- pable and the fi ghters, in general, were ferocious. Jacques Dicks (49) is proud to show off his three “We had our hands full, but overall South bronze medals which he achieved at the WMO Africa did very well.
