DRIVING PREVENTION THROUGH RESEARCH TOUR
About M-CROSH In June 2017, the Centre for Research in Occupational Safety and Health (CROSH) unveiled Canada’s first mobile laboratory for occupational safety and health research: M-CROSH. The custom designed 40-foot integrated truck/trailer mobile laboratory was established with funding from the Ontario Ministry of Labour and includes laboratory, meeting, and clinic space to support field research in: mental health and quality of work-life, fatigue, mobile equipment design for accident prevention, vibration induced injury prevention, heat stress, prevention of musculoskeletal disorders, and evaluation of intervention programs; to name a few. M-CROSH also aims to serve as a bridge to communities, often excluded from occupational health and safety research due to their northern geography and increase collaboration between research Centres, workers, industry, and health and safety agencies.
About the tour The Driving Prevention Through Research tour was made possible through support from Laurentian University’s Goodman School of Mines and Workplace Safety and Prevention Services (WSPS). From September 20 through October 5, 2017, Canada’s first mobile workplace health and safety laboratory, M-CROSH, visited 12 communities across Northern Ontario. During the tour, CROSH hosted nearly 500 tours of the mobile lab and asked visitors to share key health and safety issues that workers and workplaces face in their community and throughout the region. Additional Tour Personnel Tour Summary
Venue Information Our mobile lab visited six communities in northeastern Ontario and six communities in northwestern Ontario over a two-week period. In each community, we hosted a two-hour drop-in event open to all and
sought to engage in dialogue surrounding the health and safety concerns of people
Invited Speakers Each event commenced with an informal agenda of speakers beginning with a welcome from the CROSH team introducing those in attendance to CROSH and the mobile lab. A CROSH graduate student would
speak to their experience participating in research with CROSH. Finally, community members attested to the experience of their organization partnering with CROSH.
Participants Engaged In each community, our team engaged with individuals representing a number of industries and sectors. Throughout the report, we have identified some of the key workplaces and associations with whom we
established meaningful contact with at each location.
Media Coverage Our team had the opportunity of interacting with diverse forms of media coverage across northern Ontario. Selected news articles, media interviews, press releases and reports are highlighted in this
