Letter to Educators 19 18 Letter to Educators 19 On behalf of the Harrisburg Symphony Orchestra and the HSO Education Department, welcome to our first Young Person’s Concert of the 2018/19 season! We are excited that you will be joining us as Maestro Malina and the HSO guide you through some incredible symphonic music. Access to the arts and an understanding of the rich cultural history of classical music are essential to a 21st century education. This curriculum guide will help you prepare your students to better understand various aspects of classical music and the experience of a symphony concert. Inside, you will find biographical information, orchestral stage plots, listening guides, and activities which will engage students in fun and meaningful ways. While this information does not suggest your exact experience at the upcoming YPC, it will provide a foundation from which Maestro Malina and the HSO can take you deeper into the repertoire. Symphony No. 5 in C minor, Op. 67 Ludwig van Beethoven (1770-1827) Allegro con brio Allegro — Allegro 3 Composer Information Ludwig van Beethoven was born in Bonn, Germany in 1770. At just 29 years of age he began losing his hearing. By the time he composed the fifth symphony (which you will hear portions of at the YPC), he had lost more than 50% of his hearing! How did Beethoven continue writing music even though he could not hear? He used the vibrations from the piano to hear and feel his compositions. Beethoven spent four years COMPOSING (writing music) his fifth symphony, from 1804-1808. Those few years were a very busy time for Beethoven. During that period he COMPOSED at least fourteen pieces, including the fifth symphony AND his fourth and sixth symphonies! Some historians claim that Beethoven was so busy COMPOSING music during this period that he would hum tunes when he walked through his town and not even notice when people spoke to him. Beethoven’s fifth symphony is one of the most recognizable pieces in orchestral music. In fact, it was this symphony that helped him achieve international fame in the early 1800s. The theme of “victory through the struggle” can be heard throughout the piece. It is commonly said that the symphony’s opening theme (da-da-da-duh) represents fate knocking at the door. Whether or not that was Beethoven’s intent, the “struggle” and “victory” portions of the theme can be heard as the first movement progresses to the final movement. Movement one presents Beethoven’s initial statements in a minor (or sad) tonality—the “struggle.” The second and third movements carry the music forward to arrive at a major (happy) tonality in the fourth movement—the “victory.” To this point, Beethoven wrote the following note to one of his students… “Many assert that every minor [tonality] piece must end in the minor...On the contrary, I find that ... the major [tonality] has a glorious effect. Joy follows sorrow, sunshine — rain. It affects me as if I were looking up to the silvery glistening of the evening star.” __ __ __ __ Reference Recording The following link will direct you to a reference recording of Beethoven’s fifth symphony. Beethoven Symphony No. 5 in C Minor, Op. 67 4 A Guide to the Guide This concert guide will provide you with tools to help lead you through the repertoire which will be performed at the YPC on November 16th. You will find listening guides, composer information, inter-activities, and general information about the orchestra. The orchestra stage plot on the following page will help you find the names of the instruments in the orchestra, which families they belong to, and where they are located on stage. Each instrument name is color-coded to match its family. To help you get started, you will find below each instrument family name, its appropriate color, and the specific instruments in that family. Pay special attention to the BIG GREEN WORDS throughout the guide. They will appear again in the pre-concert questions at the performance on November 16th. Please note that the information contained within this guide is not a specific format for the YPC. Rather, its purpose is to provide a foundation for the musical works which may be performed . The exciting ways in which Maestro Malina and the HSO present this music will be a once in a lifetime experience—and you’ll be a part of it!!     THE 2019–2020 RICHARD AND BARBARA DEBS COMPOSER’S CHAIR Jörg Widmann Marco Borggreve Marco Composer, clarinetist, and conductor Jörg Widmann has been appointed to the Richard and Barbara Debs Composer’s Chair for the 2019–2020 season. Mr. Widmann’s captivating and powerfully visceral music has won him numerous high-profile commissions and countless performances from soloists, chamber ensembles, and major orchestras around the world. A much sought- after virtuoso clarinetist and dynamic conductor, he has performed his own works—as well as works by other composers—with Daniel Barenboim, Mitsuko Uchida, the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra, and a host of other great artists. Mr. Widmann’s residency showcases his musical versatility and imaginative vision with his powerful orchestral works performed by The Cleveland Orchestra, Munich Philharmonic, Mahler Chamber Orchestra, and The MET Orchestra. The series also recognizes the striking originality in his chamber music with an all-star ensemble headlined by violinist Anne-Sophie Mutter, who gives the New York premiere of his new work for string quartet. He displays his formidable skills as a clarinetist, playing his own music as well as works by Schumann and Mozart in a trio with violist Tabea Zimmermann and pianist Dénes Várjon. He does triple duty with the Irish Chamber Orchestra, conducting his own music and playing the clarinet, and with the International Contemporary Ensemble in a program devoted to his works. As part of his residency, he returns to his alma mater to conduct the Juilliard Orchestra at Alice Tully Hall. The series additionally features two lectures in which he discusses dissonance and beauty, as well as Beethoven’s lasting impact.

    DDD PHILHARMONIC SOLOISTS • CLARINET 8.557232 THE ART OF THE CLARINET Beethoven • Brahms • Berg • Mendelssohn Peter Schmidl, Clarinet • Madoka Inui, Piano Teodora Miteva, Cello • Pierre Pichler, Basset-horn Peter Schmidl The clarinettist Peter Schmidl was born in Olmütz, now Olomuc in the Czech Republic, and studied at the Vienna Musikhochschule, now the Music University, with Rudolf Jettel, being awarded a diploma with distinction. In 1965 he joined the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra, where he is now Principal Clarinettist. He has appeared as a soloist with the orchestra, as well as with the MDR Orchestra in Leipzig, the Salzburg Mozarteum Orchestra, and the New Philharmonia in Tokyo, among others, in collaboration with conductors including Leonard Bernstein, André Previn, Karl Böhm, James Levine, Riccardo Muti, Seiji Ozawa, Nikolaus Harnoncourt, and Christoph Eschenbach. Since 1967 he has served as a professor at the Vienna Music University and has given master-classes in Europe and Japan. Peter Schmidl has recorded the greater part of the clarinet repertoire, notably Mozart’s Clarinet Concerto under Leonard Bernstein, Bernstein’s jazz Prelude, Fugue and Riffs, Mozart’s Sinfonia Concertante for wind instruments under Karl Böhm, and chamber music by Mozart, Beethoven, Brahms, Weber, Schoenberg, Danzi, Ibert and Hindemith, collaborating with Andras Schiff, Edita Gruberova, Cecilia Bartoli and others. Madoka Inui The pianist Madoka Inui was born in Kobe and had her first piano training in Tokyo. She studied at the Vienna Conservatory with Dianko Iliew and Roland Batik and was awarded her diploma unanimously with distinction. She won first prize in the Città di Stresa international piano competition and has appeared as a soloist in Austria, Japan and Spain.

Messer-Kruse Graduate Faculty Representative Marilyn Shrude Kenneth Thompson © 2016 Octavio Más-Arocas All Rights Reserved iii ABSTRACT Emily Freeman Brown, Advisor Despite great efforts by American composers, their prodigious musical output has been mostly ignored by American orchestras. Works by living American composers account for an annual average of only 6% of all the music performed by American orchestras, while works by living composers of all nationalities combined totals a meager 11%. This study examines some of the historical breaking points in the relationship between American orchestras and new music. Five exceptional orchestras are cited, the New York Philharmonic, Los Angeles Philharmonic, Chicago Symphony Orchestra, the Atlanta Symphony, and the Seattle Symphony, that are thriving while successfully incorporating new music in their programing. This document draws attention to the significant role new music can play in the future of American orchestras by analyzing the programing of new music and projects that support composers, identifying innovative orchestral leaders and composers who have successfully served in advisory positions, and by recognizing and discussing the many creative strategies orchestras are using today. This document attempts to increase the understanding of the need for change in concert programing while highlighting several thrilling examples of innovative strategies that are making an essential contribution to the future of orchestral music.

This packet contains lesson plans and composer biographies that are designed to help you prepare attendees for the family program on February 9th and the Berton Family Young People’s Concerts on February 11th and 13th. For accompanying audio materials, please use the CD given to you from Advocates for Classical Music during their classroom visit or use the playlist on the San Diego Symphony website, under the Young People’s Concert page. Specific music tracks will be indicated in each lesson. We hope that the guide will be useful to parents, caretakers, music instructors, and classroom teachers.
