The Trip to Ancient Yaroslavl 1000 Y YAROSLAVL – – YAROSLAVL EARS The trip to ancient Yaroslavl 1000 Y YAROSLAVL – – YAROSLAVL Th e Yaroslavl region is a unique place for travelling. It seems that no signifi cant event in the history of Russia passed the Yaroslavl land – it was here that ancient Roos was founded, Prince Alexander Nevsky spent his childhood (Pereslavl-Zalessky), devastating Tartar raids befell the city, miraculous healings happened in the monasteries and Peter I founded the Great Russian Fleet (Pereslavl-Zalessky). Th e city development plans by Empress Catherine II have survived to this day. Th ese facts are refl ected in architecture and art. Th e «Golden Ring», a tourist route running through a series of cities and towns of central Russia, includes the towns of the Yaroslavl region: Yaroslavl, Rostov-the-Great, Pereslavl-Zalessky, Uglich. In 2005 the historical centre of Yaroslavl was included in the UNESCO World Heritage Site. Th e towns of the Yaroslavl region are a visual encyclopedia of Russian architecture. One can see here monastic complexes as well as classical ensembles. For example in Rostov-the-Great we can see the 17th century ensemble of its metropolitanate of rare beauty and integrity. Th e Yaroslavl cathedrals of the 17-th century (St. Elijah-the-Prophet Church, Th e Church of St. John-Chrysostom-in-Korovnikie) with their colourful, ornate tile decoration are an original and unique phenomenon in the world architecture. Th ey have survived to this day and looking at them is like to enter a fairy tale. However, Yaroslavl also saved some interesting monuments of the 18th- 19th century provincial classicism, eclecticism and Art Nouveau of the end of the 19th century and the beginning of the 20th century. Besides we recommend you to visit not only the sights of Yaroslavl, but its environs. For example, in Tutayev you will see a miracle: the frescoes of Resurrection Church; they preserved their colours in a primordial state. Th e Church was not closed in the period of the Soviet rule. It is certainly a must for a tourist to visit Rybinsk and Poshehonie in the north-west part of the region; you will enjoy wonderful views of the cities, situated on the bank of the Volga River. In Rybinsk, a surprisingly original city stretching along the Volga, you can still feel the scope and pride of rich merchants. Eclecticism, neoclassicism and Art Nouveau are intertwined in its buildings. Don’t miss in your trips small Myshkin with its unusual museums of mice, felt boots, and even the Mouse Palace which won’t strike your imagination but will certainly amuse you. But in Uglich, with its tragic history, the shadow of bygone events seems to hover around. Its cathedrals, the brightest example of the world architecture encyclopedia, have survived to this day – the Church of St. Demetrius– on– the– Blood, St. Alexius’ Monastery. Th e Art Museums of Yaroslavl, Rybinsk, Uglich, Rostov possess rich collections of icons and 19th-20th century pictures of the famous Russian painters. In 2010 ancient Yaroslavl celebrates its anniversary. Th e city has become more beautiful, has been ‘dressed up’, a lot of monuments and ancient mansions have been restored, the Volga embankment has been ‘dressed’ in granite, a lot of new objects have been built. It’s impossible to speak about everything, it’s necessary to see millennial Yaroslavl in its holiday-like appearance. Th e company «Volga-tour» will help you to do it. Welcome to the Yaroslavl land! Th e millennium of Yaroslavl is the brightest celebration for everybody! | MICE-department | Event-department | Excursion department | Travel agency | Aircenter | Register number of IIT 005420 and United federal register of touroperators 24-a, Trefoleva str., Yaroslavl, Russia,150000 p.o. 122, Yaroslavl, Russia, 150014 Tel.:+7 (4852) 58-87-13/14 Fax:+7(4852)30-80-83, www.volga-tours.com, e-mail:[email protected].

  • Sediment Balance of the Volga Reservoirs
Sediment balance of the Volga reservoirs IM. A. Ziminova Abstract. The main input component of the Volga Reservoir sediment balance is the product of bank and bed abrasion (60—80 per cent of the total input). The second component is the river suspended sediment discharge (20-40 per cent}. Only 1 -S per cent of the total sediment input is derived from plankton and the higher aquatics. The main component of the output is sedimentation (60-98 per cent). Suspended sediment discharge from reservoirs varies from 2 to 40 per cent of the total output. Sediment balances of reservoirs are being compiled to estimate the silting of reservoirs and to forecast the tendency of this process. These balances allow one to determine the value of and to reveal the causes of quantitive changes in the sediment discharge under the conditions of flow regulation, and to consider possible changes in the composition of sediments.
