President’s Message

It has been truly gratifying for me to see the growth in membership numbers over the past couple of years. Whilst this may be in part to the new Historic Vehicle 60 Day Scheme, many have not taken up that option or their vehicles are still under restoration. What I realized is that I have not acknowledged these new additions to our club. I asked Sue Pulo (Membership Officer) to provide me with the names of those who have joined (or re-joined) in the past 12 months. (If you predate that...welcome also!) So, in no particular order, I would like to (belatedly) welcome the following people;

Kevin & Melinda Sturgiss—2 x S Series Under Restoration David Rouse—S Series Under Restoration Allan Etheridge—R Series Under Restoration Craig Keogh—R Series Original Patrick Mahanay—S Restored Modified Steven Town—2 x R Series and 1 x S Series Under Restoration Ryan Punch—3 x S Series Under Restoration Ken Clark—R Series Under Restoration Tony Wills—R Series Restored Authentic Rod Anderson—S Series Restored Authentic Syd & Kerrie Coomes—S Series Restored Modified Matt Waller—R Series Under Restoration Authentic Brian Newton—S Series Under Restoration Steven MacDonald—R Series Restored Authentic Hugo Kaag—S Series Restored Modified.

Of course, with nearly 90 members (and growing), space here does not allow me to mention you all by name but as a club, we value your being a part of what we share.

On another note, after seeing many misquotes on paint and interior schemes for our cars, I thought it was time to set the record straight. You will find copies of the original Valiant by Chrysler Paint & Trim Combinations for both R and S Series vehicles on pages 8 & 9. Hopefully, this will serve as a valuable reference guide. Thank you to the contributing authors for this edition, Paul R. Baker and Kathryn Williams. It always makes my life a little easier.

A Valiant Story

By (Sir) Paul R. Baker

Sixteen Years ago, having fond memories from seeing the then, newly released 1962 R & S Series Valiants, I purchased a white Manual S Series with NSW Registration CUX-552. Not long after, I tracked down the NSW R & S Valiant Club and joined up. I bestowed my S with the fitting name “ Prince” (Valiant). The two previous owners lived in the suburbs of Lake Macquarie, not far from me. We have participated in many ACD’s Motorfests, CMC Eastern Creek days, Chromefest, Kurri Kurri festi- vals and Maitland Steamfests. It has gone on runs from Port Macquarie to the South Coast of NSW. “Prince” has had a paint respray before I became the owner but is in original condition, otherwise.

Donnison Street Gosford—1967 Paul also sent in an article from Coastline Community News from September 27, 2018 describing the proposed develop- ment of a cultural precinct and an image of the area back in 1967 with a 5 year old Valiant parked on the street. They would have been a common sight at the time.

R & S Series Valiant Car Club of NSW Page 6 of 24 Issue 193

' New member Matt Waller of Charlestown NSW, came across this “barn find” and purchased it re- cently. The car is Camelot Grey with a red interi- or. It has its original motor, RP2-1101 matching its body number RV1-4-101. Matt plans to restore it to its authentic original finish. It is nice to see these R and S Valiants that have been hidden away for decades finally coming out of hiberna- tion and receiving the attention they deserve. Well done Matt and welcome to the club.

Chrysler Valiant’s Wonderful World of Color

There has long been some confusion surrounding the names and codes of the paint shades available on the R & S Series Valiants assembled in Australia. The official Chrysler Australia Ltd charts below, along with a more legible spreadsheet on the adjacent page should clarify some of the misconceptions. The can labels below (courtesy of Mike Shime) show the touch up paint available at that time also. These touch up cans were avail- able for all interior and exterior shades. Berger were the leading suppliers of automotive paints to CAL, how- ever they did also use BALM paints (British Australian Lead Manufacturers—bought out by Dulux) at times. The prefix on the aluminium paint plate located on your bulkhead (firewall) will begin with either BERG or BALM, followed by the paint code. See paint plate examples on the bottom of the facing page.

Donut Derelicts Monthly run to Café Pennoz

By Kathryn Williams

This month sees Miss Moparian mingle around another hugely popular car enthu- siast’s event on the Central Coast. Donut Derelicts meets the second Sunday of every month at Café Pennoz – Reliance Drive Tuggerah. Cars line the street, a lo- cal business parking lot and the Café Car Park. Lots of great conversa- tion, cappuccinos and bacon and egg rolls to go round.

On 10th February, I started out the morn- ing in tandem with my Monaro Man. Along the way we happened upon anoth- er stunning Black S. Telepathically (or maybe just wisely), the Monaro knew to make room for my S to catch up and cruise on into Café Pennoz in a glorious S Series convoy (plus one Monaro).

Hell yeah, we looked good!!

R & S Series Valiant Car Club of NSW Page 10 of 24 Issue 193

Although it’s taken a bit of getting used to, I am happy to report War- wick’s pristine ex S is making lots of appearances on the Central Coast and is in truly great hands with Raymond Reed. Derelict Donuts host another well populated meet featuring many and varied historic vehicles. A few stun- ning R/T Chargers and of course a couple of awesome ‘SV1’s’ as well. So, if you’re up for a cruise to the sun- ny Central Coast, let me know you’re coming and I’ll meet you at Derelict Donuts. Hope you enjoy the pictures, even the one of those Monaro rascals! Happy Motoring From Kathryn - your intrepid Central Coast reporter.

The Scenic Drive

to Austinmer

By Colin Kenny-Levick

Club members met up at McDonalds Greenacre on a warm and sunny Sunday morning in February. Craig Downes and Norm Williams dropped in for a coffee but had other plans for the day.

We took the scenic route through the Royal National Park and on the awesome Sea Cliff Bridge. We trav-

elled in convoy with Bob Thomsen as sweeper but he pulled over at Stanwell Park so we waited at Coalcliff to let him catch up before proceeding to the bridge. I passed a jogger along the way to Coalcliff

and thought he looked familiar but thought nothing

more about it. Whilst waiting, the jogger caught up with us. It was my nephew Simon, out for a 45km jog. He has amazing stamina. Those hills are steep. Bob caught up and we drove on to Austinmer and found parking at the railway station, about 500m in from the beachfront.

We found a “hole in the wall” bar called “ Shells Beer

Garden and stopped in for a drink. It was very beach bar in design and drinks were served from a convert- ed shipping container. It was pretty funky but they didn’t serve food, so we all went a couple of stores down to a restaurant with a great open view of the beach and enjoyed some fine food.

R & S Series Valiant Car Club of NSW Page 12 of 24 Issue 193

Apparently, Bev and Charlie drove straight there but left minutes before we arrived. It was great to see Mick and Michelle Benson there. Long time members but don’t always get a chance to come along to these events. Also there for their first run with the club in their recently acquired S Series was Syd and Kerrie Coomes. Of course, Colin and Pam Money, Bob Thomsen and Matthew along with yours truly made up the numbers for the day. It was just perfect. A gentle breeze, great food and engaging compa- ny made for a wonderful experience. Michelle decided that she owned “Shells Beer Garden” and was happy to pose for a snapshot below the surfboard sign. We also had a curi- ous and quite tame lizard join us on and off through drinks. Syd and Kerrie discovered they have something in common with Bob Thomsen. Their daughter is finishing her degree in some equine field and who better to discuss horse training with than Bob. It’s all about networking! After lunch, we made our way home separate- ly. Col, Pam and I went back via Appin and Campbelltown following my GPS. Somehow, it missed the freeway completely. Sorry Colin! Now I am looking forward to the run to Thirl- mere train museum. A chance to meet Thomas the tank Engine!!! These runs are like a holiday. Come along for the fun and friendship.

Chrysler’’’s Aluminium Slant Six Motor

Text from Hemmings Motor News April 2006 by Steve Magnate (adapted by Colin Kenny-Levick)

Few people realize that when Chrysler established the final design parameters for the 170-cu.in. low- deck and 225-cu.in. raised-deck Slant Six engines in May 1958, the blocks, cylinder heads and intake man- ifolds were intended to be made of aluminum. After all, this was to be an all-new engine for the corpora- tion's first post-war compact car, the 1960 .

According to detailed accounts given by Willem We- ertman, the managing engineer of Chrysler's Engine Design group between 1955 and 1962: "From the be- ginning, the Valiant engine program had the optimis- tic view that, with concerted design, development and manufacturing effort, we could have an alumi- num engine at little cost over a cast-iron engine. As insurance for the aluminum program, cast-iron ver- sions of the block and head were also designed and procured for the 225 as well as the 170 engine... It was understood that if the development of the alumi- num engines did not encounter major problems, the development of the cast-iron versions would be ter- minated at a future date when the success of the alu- minum engines was assured."

By November 26, 1958, the world's first Slant Six was assembled and running in a Chrysler test cell. It was an iron 170-cu.in. version. Within two weeks an alu- minum 170 was running and, by February and March 1959, prototype iron and aluminum 225-cu.in. en- gines were also running. But it was not all sweetness and light. Numerous setbacks with the aluminum en- gine block die-casting equipment forced Chrysler to play it safe and the Slant Six made its 1960 debut with a traditional cast-iron block.

The aluminum-cylinder-head program was also run- ning into trouble. "All foundry attempts to improve the casting quality of the aluminum heads had been unsuccessful and this was just too big a risk to chance in the first year," Weertman said. "This meant iron heads also ap- peared on the inaugural-year Slant Six."

R & S Series Valiant Car Club of NSW Page 14 of 24 Issue 193

One respite from the gloom was the success of the sand-cast aluminum, single-barrel intake manifold. Every 1960 Slant Six engine was so

equipped but cost cutting got the best of it. For the 1961 model year, a virtually identical cast-iron version replaced it and remained in use until an updated aluminum part, with EGR provisions, was released for a 1976-'77 engine weight-reduction campaign.

Despite the slow start, Chrysler was persistent in continued aluminum- block development and, in 1961, some 10,767 of the engines were built and installed as optional equip- ment in regular-production Plym- outh Valiant and Lancer com- pact cars.

Approximately 36,000 more were installed in 1962 Valiants and Lan- cers. According to the 1962 Blue Book, the optional aluminum-block 225 for Valiants and Lancers carried option code 502 and cost $47.35 ($38.60 wholesale) over the base 170 cast-iron Slant Six. By compari- son, the optional Music Master AM radio cost $58.50 ($45.45 whole- sale). Interestingly, the Blue Book does not list the optional aluminum 225 for any other Chrysler Corpora- tion automobile or truck, dispelling many myths and supporting the probability that it was only offered in compacts.

Despite selling nearly 50,000 units, the aluminum option was soon can- celled.

"While the lower weight was still a desirable feature, this held little per- ceptible advantage to the consumer, either in terms of fuel economy or performance," Weertman said. "Taking everything together, it simp- ly wasn't worth the effort."

R & S Series Valiant Car Club of NSW Page 15 of 24 Issue 193

Moreover, the slow-selling aluminum engine was sapping production time and space from its wildly successful cast-iron counterpart-- which further sealed the lightweight en- gine's fate. "To continue further develop- ment of the aluminum Slant Six manufactur- ing process at the Trenton Engine Plant would have reduced plant efficiency at a time when the demand for Slant Six engines was escalating," Weertman said. "By Engi- neering and Manufacturing consensus, the aluminum-engine program was terminated at the end of the 1962 model year and only iron cylinder blocks were produced after that."

The sun was also setting on aluminum head development. While engineers continued to make do by repairing flawed prototype castings and numerous engines and vehicles sporting alloy heads racked up dyno and test track time, the end was inevitable. "On Feb- ruary 17, 1960, the Forge and Foundry Divi- sion requested that the aluminum head be cancelled from production consideration due to an inability to obtain castings free of porosity and that only the cast-iron heads be produced," Weertman said. "As such, the aluminum head never reached dealer show- rooms, and it is especially ironic that the rel- atively few 1961 and '62 aluminum-block production engines were equipped with comparatively mundane iron heads."

Chrysler wasn't the only company afflicted with aluminum fever during the post-war era. All of Detroit saw aluminum as a means of saving weight, facilitating annual bright- work updates, improving vehicle dynamics and reducing manufacturing cost. You could say aluminum had the same marketing and manufacturing buzz factor that carbon fiber does today, probably more. A study con- ducted by Alcoa in 1956 revealed that one of 1955's top users of aluminum was the Chrys- ler , carrying 65 pounds per car. For 1956, the top honor went to the Cadillac Eldorado, with nearly three times as much-- 191.5 pounds. The study showed that the average 1955 model contained 29.6 pounds, with the number growing to 35.2 pounds for 1956, and predicted averages of 50 pounds by 1960 and 81 pounds by 1965.

R & S Series Valiant Car Club of NSW Page 16 of 24 Issue 193

Parts manufactured from aluminum typically weigh one- third to one-half as much as similar parts manufactured from cast iron. So using 300 pounds of aluminum could

cut car weight from 500 to nearly 1,000 pounds versus iron. Automatic transmissions were among the first com- ponents liberated from excess girth by aluminum. Pack- ard chopped an amazing 90 pounds from its Ultramatic by switching to an alloy case and select internal parts. The famed GM Hydra-Matic and Dynaflow also evolved with steady annual influxes of aluminum. Soon alumi- num clutch covers, brake drums and countless bits of interior and body trim were commonplace. But in the realm of engines, factory-sourced aluminum was limited mostly to pistons, high-compression Nash cylinder heads and certain Corvette and Thunderbird valve covers. This would change by the late 1950s as De- troit mounted its response to the growing foreign car invasion. Chrysler's aluminum Slant Six wasn't alone in preparing to drive the VWs, Renaults and Simcas back into the ocean. GM was busy readying its mostly alumi- num 300-pound Corvair six-cylinder and had a reported $50 million invested in developing the 350-pound all- aluminum Buick/Olds 215-cu.in. V-8. American Motors was also in the game with an aluminum block version of its 195.6 OHV straight-six. Detroit's strategy was to lure foreign compact buyers with larger offerings that deliv- ered similar fuel efficiency and cost less. Aluminum en- gines were a key factor in achieving an acceptable size-to -weight balance, and Detroit hoped these engines would cost less to make. On the surface, aluminum engines don't seem cheaper due to the fact that aluminum alloys cost five to seven times as much per pound as iron and steel. The secret lies in casting and machining costs. Then as now, costs were Detroit's toughest problem, and any promising way to reduce them--whether through savings in material, labor, or overhead--was sure to get a lot of engineering attention. While battling ongoing quality control prob- lems, automakers quickly discovered the buying public wasn't all that impressed by these lightweight engine designs. By 1965, the market had spoken and, excepting Corvair, Detroit engine designers lapsed back into a cast- iron mentality. Sure, aluminum alternators, water pumps, , distributors and timing covers con- tinued the alloy march, but the expense of aluminum heads and blocks would only be justified on exotic facto- ry performance engines like the 426 Race Hemi, Ford SOHC 427 and ZL1 Chevrolet big-block. All of which makes the existence of the aluminum Slant Six all the more incredible.
