Peter Carey: Venturing Into Territory He Had Long Steered Clear Of
__________________________________________________________ Peter Carey: Venturing into territory he had long steered clear of Andrew Purcell 26 October 2017 When the time comes to write the story of Peter Carey's life (and someone else will have to volunteer, because he has no interest in doing it himself) the National Playwrights Conference in Canberra, in May 1984, will be recalled as the place he met his second wife, theatre director Alison Summers. He arrived a not-quite- married man, nine years into a relationship with painter Margot Hutcheson, and never returned home to Bellingen. Another important event occurred there, though, that is less well known: a conversation with Aboriginal activist Gary Foley that had a profound influence on Carey's writing. It would be a form of colonisation for white authors to inhabit the inner lives of Indigenous Australians, Foley told him. In short: "We don't want you guys writing about us." Australian author Peter Carey: "I don't think you'd want a writer who was writing puff pieces for their country." Photo: Steven Siewert So for decades, as he wove an epic tapestry of his homeland, a colony founded on stolen territory by convicts and their jailers, Carey omitted Aboriginal characters and stories. His great Australian novels Illywhacker, Oscar and Lucinda and True History of the Kelly Gang are animated by Scottish and Irish settlers, Chinese and Jewish 2 immigrants, Englishmen (real and imaginary) and their descendants. The continent's Indigenous peoples are present only in their absence. In Illywhacker, Australia itself is a story told by a liar, spelled out towards the end by fictional historian MV Anderson: "Our forefathers were all great liars. -

THE STYRENE SHEET VOL. 43, No.10 WWW.SVSM.ORG October 2009 A Publication of the Silicon Valley Scale Modelers, A chartered Chapter of International Plastic Modeler’s Society, USA branch. Editor’s Ravings – this month’s editor, Mick Burton Scary is as scary does. How eerily coincident that the latest issue of the IPMS/USA Journal showed up this week in my home mail, with lead editorial by Styrene Sheet Alumnus Chris Bucholtz including material which now informs my own effort here! Chris reflects on reasons not entirely obvious to many looking solely on as consumers of the Journal, as to why coverage of the recent USA Nationals in Columbus was not the main thrust of this Journal issue which does follow about two months after event occurred. Time and energy management dealing with the sheer volume of finished yet actually raw material. With a desire to produce a product of coverage at least equal in quality to that of the items in focus (namely the very lovely works in miniature and competition) Being delivered by folks who have far too much going on in their lives yet do this work too. Having been one of the crew members in the Judging and the Photography teams thus a witness to the truly monumental shoe horning of much quality effort into a tiny amount of time to deliver results, I know first hand what he was writing about. This month’s Sheet was on my responsibility roster when I left for Columbus. Seemed at the time a far away and far easier effort than it ended up, a reminder of how quickly many ever so small projects can suddenly add up to massive time/energy monsters hungry for more of both when you no longer have a bit of either to spare. -

Fantastic Art Revisited: Exhibiting Old Masters & Contemporary Art
Fantastic Art Revisited: Exhibiting Old Masters & Contemporary Art A symposium presented by Nicholas Hall and Yuan Fang in conjunction with the exhibition at David Zwirner Endless Enigma: Eight Centuries of Fantastic Art Saturday Afternoon October 27, 2018 The Kitchen 512 W 19th Street, New York RSVP required for entry. Please email [email protected] or telephone +1 212-772-9100 Please arrive promptly as no one shall be seated once the presentation begins Fantastic Art Revisited: Exhibiting Old Masters and Contemporary Art is a symposium organized by Nicholas Hall and Yuan Fang, to take place on the closing day of the accompanying exhibition Endless Enigma: Eight Centuries of Fantastic Art at David Zwirner. The symposium brings into focus the legacy of Alfred H. Barr Jr.’s 1936 MoMA exhibition Fantastic Art, Dada, Surrealism. A key point of reference for Endless Enigma, Barr’s exhibition brought art by Dada and Surrealist artists into the context of what he called ‘fantastic art’ by European Old Masters, whose works displayed unexpected thematic and formal relationships with those of the avant- garde. It was, in fact, one of the earliest modern museum exhibitions to explore the continuous conversation between art of the past and art of the present – a dialogue that has enjoyed increasing popularity in recent years across the museum and commercial art world. The half-day event will consist of presentations by curators and academics from leading European and American institutions. Divided into two sessions, the presentations will cover a diverse range of topics referencing a single work, subject or concept touched upon in Endless Enigma; the first session explores the earlier history of fantastic art, while the following session presents topics pertaining to museology and display. -

How many car owners are fortunate enough to have their vehicles featured on a maga- zine cover-much less several in one year? Tom Daniel’s artwork graced three covers in ’65. A wild T-bucket was the single image for the January issue. The June issue shows Tom’s version of a custom Model A woodie. This showstopper would fit in right now as the new millennium woodie. The radical ’32 coupe on September’s cover would be center stage at today’s car show. In the corner of the June ’67 issue is Tom’s rendering of R&C’s "Volksrod" project. One of Tom’s restyling ideas for the new ’67 Camaro was found on the January ’67 cover. Here’s a Daniel rendering that made it to one of street rodding’s most recognizable Track Ts. Tom was given the assignment for the January ’73 issue to design some different Track Ts around an early ‘70s Datsun run- Tom Daniel grew up in Southern ning gear.
