  • The Audience of Contemporary Dance in Finland
Facts about the Arts Publication no 31 Arts Council of Finland Helsinki 2003 Timo Cantell The Audience of Contemporary Dance in Finland A study on the audience of the contemporary dance festival Dance Arena 2000 English Summary Dance Arena 2000 This report studies contemporary dance audiences in Finland based on the festival Dance Arena 2000, organised in February 2000. The Dance Arena festival presented key Finnish choreographers, performers and groups as part of the European City of Culture programme in the year 2000, when Helsinki celebrated this special nomination along with eight other Euro- pean cities. The aim of the Dance Arena was to highlight the current state of contemporary dance in Finland, enhance its image, market it abroad and widen the audience base of dance performances overall. The research material In all, the festival featured 30 performances, with an audience totalling close to 5,000. The venues used represented typical dance venues in Hel- sinki, ranging from the Finnish National Opera, the Helsinki City Theatre, and Kiasma – Museum of Contemporary Art, to the smaller venues of Stoa in the eastern part of the city and Zodiak – the Center for New Dance, located at the Cable Factory in the southwestern part of Helsinki. The fes- tival budget was some 250,000 euros, part of which was used for an extraordinarily visible marketing campaign in Helsinki. This research is based on an audience survey conducted in eight events representing a variety of the festival programming. In all, 805 question- 83 naires were filled in. The audience was very motivated as 91 per cent of the respondents returned the questionnaires, a high but not uncommon figure in similar kinds of audience studies in Finland.

Analysoitavana aineistona on Juho Juntusen artikkeli Raskas metalli (2004), yleisesitys metallimusiikin vaiheista Suomessa 1970-luvulta alkaen. Juntusella on takanaan liki 30 vuoden työ rocklehti Soundissa, ja artikkelissa saavat puheenvuoron useat metalli- muusikot, joten tekstin voi olettaa uusintavan suomalaisen metallimusiikin keskeisiä käytäntöjä. • State of the World's Forest Genetic Resources Part 1
Forests and trees enhance and protect landscapes, ecosystems and production systems. They provide goods and services which are essential to the survival and well-being of all humanity. Forest genetic resources – the heritable materials maintained within and among tree and other woody plant species that are of actual or potential economic, environmental, scientific or societal value – are essential for the continued productivity, services, adaptation and evolutionary processes of forests and trees. This first volume of The State of the World’s Forest Genetic Resources constitutes a major step in building the information and knowledge base required for action towards better conservation and sustainable management of forest genetic resources at the national, regional and international levels. The publication was prepared based on information provided by 86 countries, outcomes from regional and subregional consultations and commissioned thematic studies. It presents definitions and concepts related to forest genetic resources and a FOREST GENETIC RESOURCES review of their value; the main drivers of changes and the trends affecting these vital resources; and key emerging technologies. The central section analyses the current status of conservation and use of forest genetic resources on the basis of reports provided by the countries. The book concludes with recommendations for ensuring that present and future generations continue to benefit from forests and trees, both through innovations in practices and technologies and through enhanced attention

Global Metal Music and Culture This book defines the key ideas, scholarly debates, and research activities that have contributed to the formation of the international and interdisciplinary field of Metal Studies. Drawing on insights from a wide range of disciplines including popular music, cultural studies, sociology, anthropology, philos- ophy, and ethics, this volume offers new and innovative research on metal musicology, global/local scenes studies, fandom, gender and metal identity, metal media, and commerce. Offering a wide-ranging focus on bands, scenes, periods, and sounds, contributors explore topics such as the riff-based song writing of classic heavy metal bands and their modern equivalents, and the musical-aesthetics of Grindcore, Doom and Drone metal, Death metal, and Progressive metal. They interrogate production technologies, sound engi- neering, album artwork and band promotion, logos and merchandising, t-shirt and jewelry design, and the social class and cultural identities of the fan communities that define the global metal music economy and subcul- tural scene. The volume explores how the new academic discipline of metal studies was formed, while also looking forward to the future of metal music and its relationship to metal scholarship and fandom. With an international range of contributors, this volume will appeal to scholars of popular music, cultural studies, social psychology and sociology, as well as those interested in metal communities around the world. Andy R. Brown is Senior Lecturer in Media Communications at Bath Spa University, UK. Karl Spracklen is Professor of Leisure Studies at Leeds Metropolitan Uni- versity, UK. Music/Memory/Memoir (edited by Robert Edgar et al) Dr Kimi Kärki Research Fellow Cultural History & International Institute for Popular Culture (IIPC) University of Turku, Finland Email [email protected] Phone +358 505344697 Confessions of Metal and Folk: Remembering and Contextualising the Creative Process I know that I've been here before And I swear, sometimes you were with me In different times we witnessed places Returning there I'll always find you (Lord Vicar: ’Accidents’, Gates of Flesh 2016) I am an academic with a serious professional relationship to music, both as a researcher and a musician. I wrote my Cultural History PhD (Kärki 2014) on stage designing in arena and stadium environments, trying to capture a cultural history of technological and theatrical change of high end music performance from 1965 to 2013. In this research I was partially relying on first hand performance experience on both small and big stages, and the related music technology. But the link between my academic and artistic careers is deeper than that, as I have knowingly mixed my studies and creative process, in order to find new angles to both. I started this chapter with a lyric fragment from a song I wrote back in 2015. 1 ‘Accidents’ is a heavy metal song, but the song narrative is removed from the most usual cliches – but also a great narrative tradition – of the genre, such as battles, graveyards, evil, death, and destruction. Instead, it is an introspection on how people meet and fall in love, and how that feels both accidental and yet sometimes premeditated.
