State of the World's Forest Genetic Resources Part 1 Forests and trees enhance and protect landscapes, ecosystems and production systems. They provide goods and services which are essential to the survival and well-being of all humanity. Forest genetic resources – the heritable materials maintained within and among tree and other woody plant species that are of actual or potential economic, environmental, scientific or societal value – are essential for the continued productivity, services, adaptation and evolutionary processes of forests and trees. This first volume of The State of the World’s Forest Genetic Resources constitutes a major step in building the information and knowledge base required for action towards better conservation and sustainable management of forest genetic resources at the national, regional and international levels. The publication was prepared based on information provided by 86 countries, outcomes from regional and subregional consultations and commissioned thematic studies. It presents definitions and concepts related to forest genetic resources and a FOREST GENETIC RESOURCES review of their value; the main drivers of changes and the trends affecting these vital resources; and key emerging technologies. The central section analyses the current status of conservation and use of forest genetic resources on the basis of reports provided by the countries. The book concludes with recommendations for ensuring that present and future generations continue to benefit from forests and trees, both through innovations in practices and technologies and through enhanced attention to forest genetic resources at the institutional and policy level. They provide vital environmental services such as soil and water protection, regulate the climate and preserve biodiversity, Fproduce valuable raw materials and food, and sustain the livelihoods of millions of people. Forest genetic resources – the heritable materials maintained within and among trees and other woody plant species – are essential for the adaptation and the evolutionary processes of forests and trees as well as for improving their resilience and productivity. The conservation of forest genetic resources is more topical than ever at a time when the world is increasingly confronted with challenges from increased human population, land- use changes and climate change. These pressures, and related increases in unsustainable use, wildfire, pests and diseases, as documented in the Climate change 2013 report of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), are causing losses of forest cover and of forest biodiversity, both among and within species. Lack of information limits the capacity of many countries and the international community to develop appropriate policy tools to address the issues or to integrate forest genetic resources management into relevant cross-cutting sectorial policies. Reliable data on the status and trends of forest genetic resources are required for decision- makers and stakeholders to provide adequate support for their sustainable management. Recognizing this need for information and the urgency of addressing the conservation and sustainable use of forest genetic resources, the Commission on Genetic Resources for Food and Agriculture requested and guided the preparation of The State of the World’s Forest Genetic Resources, and agreed, in response to its findings, on strategic priorities which the FAO Conference adopted in June 2013 as the Global Plan of Action for the Conservation, Sustainable Use and Development of Forest Genetic Resources. This first ever report on The State of the World’s Forest Genetic Resources constitutes a milestone in building the information and knowledge base required for action at the national, regional and international levels. It has been developed through a country-driven process, building on 86 country reports – representing over 85 percent of global forest cover – and with the participation of representatives from national institutions and non- governmental and community-based organizations. Its recommendations are based on these reports, which indicate that about half of the forest species in reporting countries are threatened or subject to genetic erosion, and only about one-quarter are actively managed for their products and/or services. This publication provides the basis for renewed efforts to realize national and international commitments to improved conservation, sustainable use and management of forest genetic resources. As established in its Reviewed Strategic Framework 2010-2019 and in particular through its Strategic Objective 2, FAO is striving to “increase and improve provision of goods and services from agriculture, forestry and fisheries in a sustainable manner”. Measures include strengthening its technical support to countries in the area of forest genetic resources and promoting the integration of forest genetic resources into broader forest resource management programmes at the national, regional and international levels. This report is a key ingredient in this effort.     Complete Index of Common Names: Supplement to Tropical Timbers of the World (AH 607) by Nancy Ross Preface Since it was published in 1984, Tropical Timbers of the World has proven to be an extremely valuable reference to the properties and uses of tropical woods. It has been particularly valuable for the selection of species for specific products and as a reference for properties information that is important to effective pro- cessing and utilization of several hundred of the most commercially important tropical wood timbers. If a user of the book has only a common or trade name for a species and wishes to know its properties, the user must use the index of common names beginning on page 451. However, most tropical timbers have numerous common or trade names, depending upon the major region or local area of growth; furthermore, different species may be know by the same common name. Herein lies a minor weakness in Tropical Timbers of the World. The index generally contains only the one or two most frequently used common or trade names. If the common name known to the user is not one of those listed in the index, finding the species in the text is impossible other than by searching the book page by page. This process is too laborious to be practical because some species have 20 or more common names. This supplement provides a complete index of common or trade names. This index will prevent a user from erroneously concluding that the book does not contain a specific species because the common name known to the user does not happen to be in the existing index.

    Facts about the Arts Publication no 31 Arts Council of Finland Helsinki 2003 Timo Cantell The Audience of Contemporary Dance in Finland A study on the audience of the contemporary dance festival Dance Arena 2000 English Summary Dance Arena 2000 This report studies contemporary dance audiences in Finland based on the festival Dance Arena 2000, organised in February 2000. The Dance Arena festival presented key Finnish choreographers, performers and groups as part of the European City of Culture programme in the year 2000, when Helsinki celebrated this special nomination along with eight other Euro- pean cities. The aim of the Dance Arena was to highlight the current state of contemporary dance in Finland, enhance its image, market it abroad and widen the audience base of dance performances overall. The research material In all, the festival featured 30 performances, with an audience totalling close to 5,000. The venues used represented typical dance venues in Hel- sinki, ranging from the Finnish National Opera, the Helsinki City Theatre, and Kiasma – Museum of Contemporary Art, to the smaller venues of Stoa in the eastern part of the city and Zodiak – the Center for New Dance, located at the Cable Factory in the southwestern part of Helsinki. The fes- tival budget was some 250,000 euros, part of which was used for an extraordinarily visible marketing campaign in Helsinki. This research is based on an audience survey conducted in eight events representing a variety of the festival programming. In all, 805 question- 83 naires were filled in. The audience was very motivated as 91 per cent of the respondents returned the questionnaires, a high but not uncommon figure in similar kinds of audience studies in Finland.

As part of this, fruits and kernels from 300 D. edulis and 150 I. gabonensis trees in six villages of Cameroon and Nigeria have been quantitatively characterized for 11 traits to determine combinations de®ning multi-trait ideotypes for a genetic selection programme.

Reliable and up- to-date information on the state of forest resources - not only on area and area change, but also on such variables as growing stock, wood and non-wood products, carbon, protected areas, use of forests for recreation and other services, biological diversity and forests’ contribution to national economies - is crucial to support decision-making for policies and programmes in forestry and sustainable development at all levels.     Proceedings of the 4th International Workshop on Genetics of Host-Parasite Interactions in Forestry Resistance to Phytophthora cinnamomi in the Genus Abies John Frampton,1 Fikret Isik,1 Mike Benson,2 Jaroslav Kobliha,3 and Jan Stejskal3 Abstract A major limiting factor for the culture of true firs as Christmas trees is their susceptibility to Oomycete species belonging to the genus Phytophthora. In North Carolina alone, the Fraser fir (Abies fraseri [Pursh] Poir.) Christmas tree industry loses 6 to 7 million dollars annually to root rot primarily caused by Phytophthora cinnamomi. Because no resistance has been found in Fraser fir, in 2003, the North Carolina State University (NCSU) Christmas Tree Genetics (CTG) Program conducted an extensive resistance screening of 32 Abies species (50 unique taxa) from around the world. Overall mortality was high (88 percent), but was less frequent in two of the eight taxonomic sections of the genus evaluated: Momi (65.5 percent) and Abies (79.3 percent). Species mortality rates in all other sections exceeded 93 percent. Final species mortality ranged from 10.6 percent (A. firma Sieb. et Zucc.) to 100.0 percent (several species). Hierarchical cluster analysis was used to classify species into groups representing six levels of resistance, designated as very resistant (A. firma), resistant (A. pindrow [D.Don] Royle), moderately resistant (four species), intermediate (five species), susceptible (seven species), and very susceptible (17 species). In the species screening trial, Turkish fir (A. bornmuelleriana Mattf.) and closely related Trojan fir (A. equi- trojani Coode et Cullen) ranked third and tenth for resistance, but mortality in these species was relatively high.

From numerous studies it has been determined that this is largely due to the pitch canker fungus, Fusarium circinatum. Other commercial pines, such as P. elliottii and P. taeda, show good tolerance to this pathogen and better survival, but have inferior wood properties and do not grow as well as P. patula on many sites in the summer rainfall regions of South Africa. There is, thus, an urgent need to improve the tolerance of P. patula to F. circinatum. Operational experience indicates that when P. patula is hybridized with tolerant species, such as P. tecunumanii and P. oocarpa, survival is greatly improved on the warmer sites of South Africa. Field studies on young trees suggest that this is due to the improved tolerance of these hybrids to F. circinatum. In order to test the tolerance of a number of pine hybrids, the pure species representing the hybrid parents, as well as individual families of P. patula 9 P. tecunumanii, a series of greenhouse screening trials were conducted during 2008 and 2009.
