Facts about the Arts Publication no 31 Arts Council of Finland Helsinki 2003 Timo Cantell The Audience of Contemporary Dance in Finland A study on the audience of the contemporary dance festival Dance Arena 2000 English Summary Dance Arena 2000 This report studies contemporary dance audiences in Finland based on the festival Dance Arena 2000, organised in February 2000. The Dance Arena festival presented key Finnish choreographers, performers and groups as part of the European City of Culture programme in the year 2000, when Helsinki celebrated this special nomination along with eight other Euro- pean cities. The aim of the Dance Arena was to highlight the current state of contemporary dance in Finland, enhance its image, market it abroad and widen the audience base of dance performances overall. The research material In all, the festival featured 30 performances, with an audience totalling close to 5,000. The venues used represented typical dance venues in Hel- sinki, ranging from the Finnish National Opera, the Helsinki City Theatre, and Kiasma – Museum of Contemporary Art, to the smaller venues of Stoa in the eastern part of the city and Zodiak – the Center for New Dance, located at the Cable Factory in the southwestern part of Helsinki. The fes- tival budget was some 250,000 euros, part of which was used for an extraordinarily visible marketing campaign in Helsinki. This research is based on an audience survey conducted in eight events representing a variety of the festival programming. In all, 805 question- 83 naires were filled in. The audience was very motivated as 91 per cent of the respondents returned the questionnaires, a high but not uncommon figure in similar kinds of audience studies in Finland.

  • Conductor, Composer and Violinist Jaakko Kuusisto Enjoys An
Conductor, composer and violinist Jaakko Kuusisto enjoys an extensive career that was launched by a series of successes in international violin competitions in the 1990s. Having recorded concertos by some of the most prominent Finnish contemporary composers, such as Rautavaara, Aho, Sallinen and Pulkkis, he is one of the most frequently recorded Finnish instrumentalists. When BIS Records launched a project of complete Sibelius recordings, Kuusisto had a major role in the violin works and string chamber music. Moreover, his discography contains several albums outside the classical genre. Kuusisto’s conducting repertoire is equally versatile and ranges from baroque to the latest new works, regardless of genre. He has worked with many leading orchestras, including Minnesota Orchestra; Sydney, Melbourne and Adelaide Symphony Orchestras; NDR Hannover, DeFilharmonie in Belgium; Chamber Orchestras of Tallinn and Lausanne; Helsinki, Turku and Tampere Philharmonic Orchestras; Oulu Symphony Orchestra as well as the Avanti! Chamber Orchestra. Kuusisto recently conducted his debut performances with the Krakow Sinfonietta and Ottawa’s National Arts Center Orchestra, as well as at the Finnish National Opera’s major production Indigo, an opera by heavy metal cello group Apocalyptica’s Eicca Toppinen and Perttu Kivilaakso. The score of the opera is also arranged and orchestrated by Kuusisto. Kuusisto performs regularly as soloist and chamber musician and has held the position of artistic director at several festivals. Currently he is the artistic director of the Oulu Music Festival with a commitment presently until 2017. Kuusisto also enjoys a longstanding relationship with the Lahti Symphony Orchestra: having served as concertmaster during 1999-2012, his collaboration with the orchestra now continues with frequent guest conducting and recordings, to name a few.

  • Žagajo«! Ljubljana | 6

Analysoitavana aineistona on Juho Juntusen artikkeli Raskas metalli (2004), yleisesitys metallimusiikin vaiheista Suomessa 1970-luvulta alkaen. Juntusella on takanaan liki 30 vuoden työ rocklehti Soundissa, ja artikkelissa saavat puheenvuoron useat metalli- muusikot, joten tekstin voi olettaa uusintavan suomalaisen metallimusiikin keskeisiä käytäntöjä. • State of the World's Forest Genetic Resources Part 1
Forests and trees enhance and protect landscapes, ecosystems and production systems. They provide goods and services which are essential to the survival and well-being of all humanity. Forest genetic resources – the heritable materials maintained within and among tree and other woody plant species that are of actual or potential economic, environmental, scientific or societal value – are essential for the continued productivity, services, adaptation and evolutionary processes of forests and trees. This first volume of The State of the World’s Forest Genetic Resources constitutes a major step in building the information and knowledge base required for action towards better conservation and sustainable management of forest genetic resources at the national, regional and international levels. The publication was prepared based on information provided by 86 countries, outcomes from regional and subregional consultations and commissioned thematic studies. It presents definitions and concepts related to forest genetic resources and a FOREST GENETIC RESOURCES review of their value; the main drivers of changes and the trends affecting these vital resources; and key emerging technologies. The central section analyses the current status of conservation and use of forest genetic resources on the basis of reports provided by the countries. The book concludes with recommendations for ensuring that present and future generations continue to benefit from forests and trees, both through innovations in practices and technologies and through enhanced attention

Then we would like to introduce you briefly Bonsaï Music. Bonsaï Music takes its first steps in 2004 in the music industry and has been quickly catalogued as a “Jazz record label”. However this image is a little simplistic because we believe that “Jazz” is more a musical philosophy than a specific musical genre. For thirteen years our work consisted in reconciling jazz and popular music and then promote and release Artists albums that can be enjoyed by jazz fans and lay people with this musical genre. The characteristics that most defines Bonsaï Music is our constant search of melody and/or great voices.

Global Metal Music and Culture This book defines the key ideas, scholarly debates, and research activities that have contributed to the formation of the international and interdisciplinary field of Metal Studies. Drawing on insights from a wide range of disciplines including popular music, cultural studies, sociology, anthropology, philos- ophy, and ethics, this volume offers new and innovative research on metal musicology, global/local scenes studies, fandom, gender and metal identity, metal media, and commerce. Offering a wide-ranging focus on bands, scenes, periods, and sounds, contributors explore topics such as the riff-based song writing of classic heavy metal bands and their modern equivalents, and the musical-aesthetics of Grindcore, Doom and Drone metal, Death metal, and Progressive metal. They interrogate production technologies, sound engi- neering, album artwork and band promotion, logos and merchandising, t-shirt and jewelry design, and the social class and cultural identities of the fan communities that define the global metal music economy and subcul- tural scene. The volume explores how the new academic discipline of metal studies was formed, while also looking forward to the future of metal music and its relationship to metal scholarship and fandom. With an international range of contributors, this volume will appeal to scholars of popular music, cultural studies, social psychology and sociology, as well as those interested in metal communities around the world.
