Own Your Own H-D History The image collection at the Harley-Davidson Museum® Archives is a treasure-trove of vintage photographs and other images that chronicle the history of the Motor Company from 1903 to present. We regularly reprint some of the best here in the pages of HOG® magazine, but until recently there was no way for readers to acquire copies for their own enjoyment. Now, for the first time, a large selection of archival photographs and vintage ads are available for purchase from the Harley- Davidson Archives. Over 500 images, like this rare 1921 photo of legendary H-D® racer Jim Davis on a board track, are available in stretched canvas and framed editions, as well as unframed archival paper prints. H.O.G.® News

Chapters and Choices As I travel around the country, I’m often surprised by how many prospective H.O.G. members ask me, “Don’t you have to join a local chapter to be a member of H.O.G.?” The answer is, “No … chapter membership is completely optional!” Perhaps you’ve encountered this misconception among your friends. But I’m even more surprised (and somewhat troubled) when I hear a different question, this time from current H.O.G. members: “Isn’t being a local chapter member a lot of work?” The answer, in this case, is, “Only if you want it to be!” Because the great thing about chapter membership – much as with H.O.G. itself – is that you can make it be just about anything you want. The idea of the chopper class came from his students, who were eager to get their hands on that old Ironhead. “They wanted to tear it down in class and put it back together, as kind of a side project,” he explains. Montana/Wyoming Beartooth Highway YOU CAN’T WRITE ABOUT U.S. 212 (from Red Lodge to Cooke City, Montana) without quoting the late Charles Kuralt, who famously labeled this mountain road “the most beautiful drive in America.” On two wheels, it’s doubly breathtaking, with dramatic switchbacks leading to the 10,947-foot Beartooth Pass. It has been known to snow up there at almost any time of year, so watch the weather and gear up accordingly. MOM’S TURN

This photo is of my mother and me on my 2011 FLHTC. It was her first-ever motorcycle ride – in celebration of her 77th birthday! My mom has always been supportive of my motorcycling ever since I got my first motorcycle at age 8 and my first Harley in 1992. I finally convinced her to give it a try, and she really enjoyed it. She was amazed at the feeling of freedom and how much more she could smell the fresh air.

Adults with city commutes were encouraged to save money from the “high cost of street car riding.” And the health benefits were obvious: “Muscles will harden, color will come back to the cheeks, insomnia will be a thing of the past. Legs, back, arms and brain are better for it.” But the health benefits did not stop there. Ads from 1920 also referred to the streetcar as “germ laden.” With the catastrophic influenza pandemic of 1918 still fresh in America’s memory, the bicycle kept the rider healthy in more ways than one.
