Digital Hymnal II Master Index for PDF.Pub Gulbransen DIGITAL HYMNAL DH-200 Master Index The Master Index allows easy access to all of the thousands of hymns pre-programmed into the GULBRANSEN DIGITAL HYMNAL. The Master Index contains the specific hymn title and the tune name arranged in alphabetical order together with the hymn master reference number. For example, to play the hymn “Word of God, Across the Ages”, select the Master Index code 9000, plus the master reference number (found in the Master Index) which is 492. Simply press k b b b plus ENTER and f k d plus ENTER then PLAY. Another convenient way to use the Hymnal is to refer to one of the many popular hymn books that have already been indexed internally by GULBRANSEN. You will then have words and music to use with the Hymnal performance. For example, to play hymns from The Baptist Hymnal, select code 9001 When selecting a hymn such as “Word of God, Across the Ages” (number 262 in The Baptist Hymnal), simply press k b b c plus ENTER and d h d plus ENTER then PLAY. The Hymnal always remembers the specific hymn book that you have selected until it is explicitly told to switch to a different one. It even remembers when it is turned off or the battery is removed. Due to copyright and publisher restrictions, some hymns found in your particular hymn book may not be available and therefore inaccessible on the Hymnal. However, the thousands of hymns listed in the Master Index are not restricted and can be played. HYMN NAMES versus HYMN TUNE NAMES Hymn names such as “Word of God, Across the Ages” are listed in upper and lower case letters. Hymn tune names (names that are used to label the music without reference to any particular lyrical text) are all upper case (example: “AUSTRIAN HYMN” — the tune name for “Word of God, Across the Ages”). When a hymn book is unavailable, the Master Index provides two ways to find most hymns. This well known Haydn tune appears alphabetically in the “A”s as “AUSTRIAN HYMN” and also alphabetically in the “W”s as “Word of God, Across the Ages”. Both entries show the hymn master reference number 492. Example: AUSTRIAN HYMN 492 Word of God, Across the Ages 492 DUPLICATE HYMN TITLES Browsing through this Master Index you will notice that some hymn titles may be repeated with different reference numbers. This indicates that these tunes were different enough to justify separate Hymnal recordings. Occasionally a tune name will be listed more than once. This indicates that they are two distinctly different tunes, or different versions of the same tune. Table of Contents Pages Introduction 1-3 Hymn Tune Names 4-14 Lists the Hymn Tune Names in numerical order as they are displayed in the Digital Hymnal when the Master Index (MST) is selected. The Copyright reference numbers are displayed next to the hymn when applicable. See example below. Hymn Names 15-101 Lists ALL hymns, including the Hymn Tune Names, in alphabetical order. The list also tells you the hymn book and number where the hymn is located. Note the MST column is a reference to the hymn in the MST hymn book that the hymn is based on. See example below. • BACH, Johann Sebastian
JOHANN SEBASTIAN BACH 1685-1750 Sinfonia from Cantata 29, “We thank thee, Lord” This delightfully sparkling piece began life as the prelude to the third Partita in E for solo violin. Later on, Bach reworked it for organ and small orchestra as the prelude to a new cantata to celebrate the seating of the Town Council of Leipzig in 1731. (Judging from Bach’s title, those town elections must have gone well.) This piece has been transcribed countless times for organ solo. I play my own version assembled from my favorites. Chorus from Cantata 79, “Now thank we all our God” Bach’s cantata, “God is a light and shield,” contains this setting of the familiar chorale tune for chorus and orchestra. Several arrangements have been created for various instruments. E. Power Biggs created a solo organ version. Then along came Virgil Fox, and all bets were off. Sonata in E-flat, BWV 525 Bach’s six Sonatas in “trio” format are musical and contrapuntal masterpieces, but their light texture and enormous difficulty are often passed over in preference to the larger preludes and fugues. The first sonata in E-flat is particularly cheerful. Three voices wind around one another, here upright, there inverted, scurrying here, lingering there. The result is but one of hundreds of examples of Bach’s consummate elevation of the common ground between contrapuntal mastery and musical elegance. Sonata in C minor, BWV 526 The six “trio” Sonatas have it all: marvelous harmonic activity, flawless invertible counterpoint, supreme technical pedagogy, and an enchanting character that belies their devilish difficulty – all accomplished with only three voices.

ORDER OF WORSHIP 24th Sunday after Pentecost November 15, 2020 GATHERING The people gather wherever they may in response to God’s call, offering praise in words of scripture, prayer, and song. The people acknowledge their sinfulness and receive the good news of God’s forgiveness. PRAYER BEFORE WORSHIP A time for quiet preparation before worship O Lord our God, we thank you for not hiding yourself from us. Instead, you promise to be found by us when we seek you with all of our hearts. In these times, we long for your presence from the time we wake up to the moment we lie down. Wherever we find ourselves, in whatever strife or predicament, we know your Spirit abides in us, through Jesus Christ, our Lord. Amen. PRELUDE Precatus est Moyses Charles Tournemire (L’Orgue Mystique 1870–1939) LIFE AND WORK OF THE CHURCH * CALL TO WORSHIP Come together to worship God who gives freely to all who call upon God's name. Let our voices rise to the courts of heaven with shouts of praise and hymns of glory. Be mindful of all of God's blessings and forget not his benefits. Let our spirits be free to acknowledge our salvation in the Risen Christ. Join with all of Creation as we seek first the Kingdom of God on earth. Let everything that has breath praise the Lord! * HYMN 4 Holy God, We Praise Your Name GROSSER GOTT PRAYER OF CONFESSION O King of mercy, we find ourselves once again in need of your grace and mercy. We have been lazy, quick to anger, and harsh with our neighbors.

  • Hymnal Index V4
The Christian Life Hymnal – A Guide to the Indexes Each index in the hymnal has been developed and designed to aid worshippers in quickly finding specific titles and to learn more about the hymns they sing. This brief guide provides a description of each index to help the user better understand the index and how to gain the most from it. Scriptural Allusion Index (pp. 644-648)— This index provides scriptural references and allusions for each title. Some references may relate to a specific key word, thought, phrase, stanza or thought within the hymn; other references may allude to the overall content of the hymn or the topic under which it is found. Hymn Tune Index (pp. 648-651)— Each title in a hymnal is given an identifying tune name by its composer or hymnal editor. The tune name may be of personal or family significance, relate to the hymn’s history or usage, or something else entirely. This index lists tunes alphabetically for easy reference, along with the meter of the hymn. Metrical Tune Index (pp. 651-654)— Just as every title in the hymnal has a tune name, each title has a metrical desig- nation, or meter, as well. This numeric or alpha-numeric naming indicates and directly relates to the poetic meter or pulses, accents and cadences of the hymn lyrics. There are many different hymn meters in the hymnal. As a general rule, hymns having a meter identical to those of other hymns may be sung to those tunes. Hymns with “Irregular” meters have non-recurring pulses and accents in the lyrics and cannot be used with any other tune.

  • The World Rejoicing
The World Rejoicing The World Rejoicing was commissioned by the National Brass Band Associations of Belgium, Netherlands, Norway, Switzerland, and the British Open, as the test piece for their competitions in 2020/21. Although the work was completed in 2019, the pandemic of 2020 meant that these competitions were postponed until 2021/22. The premiere will now take place in September 2021 at Symphony Hall, Birmingham, UK. In searching for a common link between the brass band traditions of the various European countries that commissioned this work, I considered the fact that hymns have always played an important role in the relationship that brass bands have with their particular communities; and thus I turned to a well- known Lutheran chorale, Nun danket alle Gott (Now thank we all our God), written around 1636 by Martin Rinkart, with the melody attributed to Johann Crüger. A number of composers have incorporated this chorale into their music, most famously J.S.Bach in his Cantatas no. 79 and 192, and Mendelssohn in the Lobsegang movement of his 2nd Symphony (the harmonization of which is usually used when this hymn is sung). It seemed fitting therefore for me to return to a compositional form I have used many times before (Variations) and to write a work based on this hymn. I have used it in a similar way to that which I employed in my Variations on Laudate Dominum of 1976 – that is, rather than writing a set of variations using elaborations of the complete tune, I have taken various phrases from the chorale and used them within the context of other musical material, applying an overall symphonic process of continuous variation and development.

  • Now Thank We/Pno
    1. Now thank we all our God 2. Oh, may our boun-teous God With hearts and hands and voic-es, Through all our life be near us, Who won-drous things hath done, With ev-er joy-ful hearts In whom his earth re-joice-es; And bless-ed peace to cheer us, Who, from our moth-ers’ arms, And keep us in his love, Hath blessed us on our way And guide us day and night, With count-less gifts of love, And free us from all ills, And still is ours to-day. Pro-tect us by his might. ««««««««««»»»»»»»»»» “Now Thank We All Our God,” is one of the most well known of Christian hymns. Due to its exultingly joyful music and text, it has been sung at many national commemorations such as the Diamond Jubilee of Queen Victoria. Catherine Winkworth provided the English translation in 1858. The German text, Nun danket alle Gott was written by Martin Rinkhart during the Thirty Years War (1618-1648). Johann Crüger, born April 9, 1598, at Grossbreesen bei Guben in Prussia, was a major contributor of Lutheran hymns in the 17th Century. He studied with Paul Homberger in Regensburg, and in 1622 was appointed cantor at St. Nicholas Church in Berlin where he served until his death February 23, 1662. His chorale, Nun danket, first appears in 1647 with Jesu, meine Freude and Schmücke dich, O lieber Seele all of which were later harmonized in numerous settings by Johann Sebastian Bach. Felix Mendelssohn, born Feb. 3, 1809, in Hamburg, the son of a banker and grandson of a great Jewish scholar, was the the second of four children.
