The Christian Life Hymnal – A Guide to the Indexes Each index in the hymnal has been developed and designed to aid worshippers in quickly finding specific titles and to learn more about the hymns they sing. This brief guide provides a description of each index to help the user better understand the index and how to gain the most from it. Scriptural Allusion Index (pp. 644-648)— This index provides scriptural references and allusions for each title. Some references may relate to a specific key word, thought, phrase, stanza or thought within the hymn; other references may allude to the overall content of the hymn or the topic under which it is found. Hymn Tune Index (pp. 648-651)— Each title in a hymnal is given an identifying tune name by its composer or hymnal editor. The tune name may be of personal or family significance, relate to the hymn’s history or usage, or something else entirely. This index lists tunes alphabetically for easy reference, along with the meter of the hymn. Metrical Tune Index (pp. 651-654)— Just as every title in the hymnal has a tune name, each title has a metrical desig- nation, or meter, as well. This numeric or alpha-numeric naming indicates and directly relates to the poetic meter or pulses, accents and cadences of the hymn lyrics. There are many different hymn meters in the hymnal. As a general rule, hymns having a meter identical to those of other hymns may be sung to those tunes. Hymns with “Irregular” meters have non-recurring pulses and accents in the lyrics and cannot be used with any other tune. To further illustrate, let’s look at “Amazing Grace” (No. 280), and “O God, Our Help in Ages Past” (No. 28), Both hymns have an 8.6.8.6 (C.M.) meter. Try singing the lyrics of “Amazing Grace” to the tune of “O God, Our Help in Ages Past”. Now, try singing these hymns the other way, swapping text and tune. You will immediately notice how easily this can be done. The secret is in counting the number of words or syllables in each phrase of the lyrics. Here’s how. Look again at the lyrics of “Amazing Grace”, phrase by phrase: 12 3 4 5 6 7 8 A-maz-ing grace! How sweet the sound 1 2 3 4 5 6 that saved a wretch like me! 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 I once was lost, but now am found; 1 2 3 4 5 6 was blind, but now I see. We can now indicate the meter of the hymn by writing the number of words and syllables of each phrase: 8.6.8.6 (C.M.). (The C.M. indicates Common Meter, the most common of the named hymn meters used to pair hymn lyrics with melodies.) C.M. is used as shorthand for 8.6.8.6. This index indicates the meter for every hymn. Take some time to dis- cover other lyrics and tunes which can be used interchangeably. Doing so often brings new energy to the hymn singing. Authors Composers, and Sources Index (pp. 654-659)— Basic information related to the people who wrote the hymns you sing is located directly beneath each hymn, including the name of the author and translator of the hymn text, composer and arranger of the music, and if applicable, information on the source of lyrics or music. All dates relat- ed to the hymn lyrics and music is contained on the hymn page. This index contains more complete information related to people and sources associated with the hymns, including birth and death dates or dates of sources from which they derived. Church Year Index (pp. 659-661)— Time is generally measured by hour and day, month and season. Our activities gen- erally are grouped according to time and season. The Church Year, or Christian Calendar, offers recurring times and opportunities for remembering and celebrating significant events of the Christian faith during times of worship. This index groups hymns appropriate for various seasons and events of the Church Year. Topical Index (pp. 662-677)— Use this index to find hymns listed under a common topic or theme. You’ll notice that many hymns are appropriate to use for different themes or topics. The index is cross-referenced for even easier use. Hymn Titles and First Lines with Key (pp. 678-684)— This index is the most used of any hymnal, helping you to quickly find any title, along with its key. It also is useful when creating same-key or related key medleys. 643 INDEX OF SCRIPTURAL ALLUISION GENESIS 5:15 67, 68 9:2 12 40:5 594 1:1 237 24:15 598 9:9 578 40:8 232 1:14 579 24:24 340, 341, 436
