    The Environment Department The Environment Department leads on the following main areas: Planning and Building Control Public Protection Transportation and the Countryside Together with the day to day work outlined below, this Department leads on the following priority projects: Public Protection Capacity – (Improvement Priority 7) Climate Change Action Plan – (Improvement Priority 8) Naturally, the Covid-19 crisis and the restrictions pertaining to it have had a considerable impact on all the department's services, with many e.g. our Public Protection services undertaking quite different work to the norm, and this under pressure. We have established a completely new service, the Test, Trace and Protect Service, and we have had to find different solutions to ensure that we can continue to provide other services. All of this has had an impact on the usual way the department is run, and on our priorities during 2020/21. The challenge of restoring and stabilising will face us during 2021/22, and we will use the lessons that have arisen from the crisis when considering the shape of our future services. Planning and Building Control Planning Service Joint Planning Policy Service, (Gwynedd and Anglesey) Building Control Service Planning Service The purpose of this service is to facilitate and manage sustainable developments for the benefit of our communities, the economy and the environment within the Gwynedd planning authority area (which does not include the National Park area). During 2019/20, over 1,000 general planning enquiries / pre-application enquiries were received. We make decisions on planning applications to develop land and deal with approximately 1,100 planning applications annually and, on average, over 91% of applications are granted permission.

Rheithordy Mallwyd Advent is the time of preparation for a journey, the beginning of Jesus' journey home to his Father, our God. The journey begins with planning and prophecies, and then a joyful send off – the birth of Jesus in the Bethlehem stable. This is the incarnation, “God with us” Julie and I had a week's holiday in Yorkshire recently, staying in the very pleasant town of Skipton. It is nice to have time to read, and so, perhaps appropriately, I read a book by the poet Simon Armitage, called “Walking Home,”describing his walk along the Pennine Way, which passes not far from Skipton. He walked for 2 weeks, in mid summer, through mist and heavy rain. Simon Armitage's book is full of vivid anecdotes, one in particular has stuck in my mind. He tells the story of friends of his, who were also walking the Pennine Way. Setting off one morning from a small Yorkshire Dales' village, to walk the 15 – 20 miles over the moors to their next overnight stop, they are joined by an ever so friendly dog, a golden retriever. They give it such a fuss, that it continues to follow them up the hill. As their village passes out of sight the first twinges of concern begin. “Hey Goldie, it is time that you turned back for home.” But no, Goldie is perfectly happy tagging along! Well surely this dog knows what it is doing, probably follows walkers every day.

NGR: SH 5384 6953 © Crown copyright: Royal Commission on the Ancient and Historical Monuments of Wales: Dating Old Welsh Houses: North West Wales Dendrochronology Project HOUSE DETAILS: An ‘important sub-medieval house which appears to be constructed in at least three or four phases, beginning in the early-mid C16 as a 2-unit house with lateral chimney, consisting of the ground floor of hall, passage and small outer room. It reached the present E-shaped plan in the early-mid C17, with the addition of a storeyed porch over the entrance, and a similar oriel bay at the E end: rear stair wing dated on close- studding, 1638. The E-plan was completed towards the end of the C17 with the addition of a larger N wing on the W side [...]. Outbuildings attached to the W end are later, mostly C19.’ (CADW listing description). ‘Lavish version of Snowdonia plan-type with projecting oriel, porch and later kitchen (?1660s) giving a busy front elevation. House has a contemporary rear parlour wing. Service rooms were in basement under the hall. Hall has a lateral chimney, framed ceiling, 16 panels; broad chamfered beams with curved stops with a torus’ (Richard Suggett, RCAHMW). Description in RCAHMW Caernarvonshire Vol. II, no. 1387a. Cantref: Arfon. Commote: Maenol Bangor (Atlas of Caernarvonshire p 71). Dendrochronology results: (a) Hall Range – felling dates: Winter 1557/8 and Summer 1562.
