The Environment Department The Environment Department leads on the following main areas: Planning and Building Control Public Protection Transportation and the Countryside Together with the day to day work outlined below, this Department leads on the following priority projects: Public Protection Capacity – (Improvement Priority 7) Climate Change Action Plan – (Improvement Priority 8) Naturally, the Covid-19 crisis and the restrictions pertaining to it have had a considerable impact on all the department's services, with many e.g. our Public Protection services undertaking quite different work to the norm, and this under pressure. We have established a completely new service, the Test, Trace and Protect Service, and we have had to find different solutions to ensure that we can continue to provide other services. All of this has had an impact on the usual way the department is run, and on our priorities during 2020/21. The challenge of restoring and stabilising will face us during 2021/22, and we will use the lessons that have arisen from the crisis when considering the shape of our future services. Planning and Building Control Planning Service Joint Planning Policy Service, (Gwynedd and Anglesey) Building Control Service Planning Service The purpose of this service is to facilitate and manage sustainable developments for the benefit of our communities, the economy and the environment within the Gwynedd planning authority area (which does not include the National Park area). During 2019/20, over 1,000 general planning enquiries / pre-application enquiries were received. We make decisions on planning applications to develop land and deal with approximately 1,100 planning applications annually and, on average, over 91% of applications are granted permission.

People who meet the following criteria: • aged 18 years of age and above • resident within Gwynedd Allotment tenants who move out of the county will be required to surrender their allotment tenancy. Are there allotment plots available at the moment? Demand for allotments has increased significantly in recent months and currently outweighs the availability of plots. Waiting lists for each allotment are listed on the website. What is the council doing to solve the problem? The council takes its responsibility to provide allotments very seriously and is currently working on a number of new projects. These include: • Deiniolen • Groeslon • Rhostryfan • Rhyd Ddu • Barmouth The Council has also set up two community gardens at: • Pwllheli leisure centre • Porthmadog leisure centre For more information about these projects contact Gwynedd’s Healthy Lifestyles Development Manager. If you’re ﬁt, catch the Snowdon Sherpa bus to Pen-y-Pass and take the Pyg Track (p227). Time your descent via the Rhyd Ddu Path to catch the Welsh Highland Railway (p244) back to Caernarfon. If you’re not up for climbing, head to Llanberis and take the Snowdon Mountain Railway (p227). You’ll be up and down the mountain in 2½ hours, leaving plenty of time to check out the National Slate Museum (p230) and Dolbadarn Castle (p231) before stocking up on mead at Snowdon Honey Farm (p231). Head to Caer- narfon and watch the sunset over the Menai Strait from beside the city walls before dining at the Black Boy Inn (p235). DAY 2 // BE A PILGRIM Spend the morning exploring Caernarfon Castle (p233) before heading for the Llŷ n Peninsula. Ideally you’ll have prebooked a boat to Bardsey but if they’re not running, make do with gazing at the island from Braich-y-Pwll (p239). Abersoch (p241), Cric- cieth (p243) and Porthmadog (p244) are good places to stop for the night, but Harlech (p218) has the best restaurants – along with another World Heritage castle. DAY 3 // A SCENIC OVERLOAD Wherever you ended up, take the scenic A498 through the Pass of Aberglaslyn and back into the national park. Spend the day pottering along the route between Beddge- lert (p228) and Betws-y-Coed (p222), stopping at the lakes, lookouts and falls.

Description: 1.1 This is a full application to install an underground 132KV grid connection between the Glyn Rhonwy pumped storage site and the existing substation in Pentir. 1.2 The connection will run for approximately 8km to the north-east from the source of the connection in Glyn Rhonwy and it will all be laid underground. First of all, it would run within the Glyn Rhonwy site, through a 0.6m wide and 1.2m deep ditch and then through a similar ditch along the verge of the A4086, A4244 and B4547 highways towards the substation in Pentir. The cables themselves would be installed within a protected duct, at a depth of 1.7m within the ditch. At the point where the path crosses Afon Rhyddallt, it is proposed to bore into the land near the riverside and send the borer under the riverbed to the land on the other side of the river. This is essential as the existing duct within the bridge is not suitable for 132kv cables.
