DECEMBER 8, 2005 6 SATELLITE FLYER www.schriever.af.mil Gym transforms into North Pole wonderland: 5th-annual Children’s Holiday Fest huge success Staff Sgt. Phyllis Duff 50th Space Wing Public Affairs

More than 360 children and their parents braved a chilly Saturday morning and a blanket of snow that swept over the Front Range Friday night to get to the 2005 Children’s Holiday Fest here. Rosy-cheeked children and adults happily trekked through the snow and wind, faces lighting up as they entered the completely transformed Main Fitness Center. Decorative snowflakes, balloons and gift-wrapped prizes abounded, and the sounds of holiday music ringing through- out the building made for a festive North Pole atmosphere. Close to $14,000 in cash and prizes from 35 sponsors’ donations and nearly 150 volunteers and staff made this year’s festival a huge success, said Thea Wasche, 50th Services Division director. “The people of Schriever always continue to amaze me with their outstanding support for our activities,” said Ms. Wasche. “Even with a questionable snowy beginning and road conditions going from red to yellow, we still had peo- ple waiting to get in at 9:30 a.m.” The cold and snow kept one of the most popular attrac- tions, the pony rides, from arriving, Ms. Wasche added. Though there are no official ceremonies in the Air Force requir- ing a script to be read when a flag is folded, retirements and simi- lar unofficial ceremonies often use such scripts, said Lt. Col. Samuel Hudspath, Air Force protocol chief. “We have had a tradition within the Air Force of individuals requesting that a flag be folded, with words, at their retirement cer- emony,” he said. Many scripts previously read aloud during a flag folding are specific to the Christian religion. Those scripts and others also ascribe meaning to the individual folds put into the flag. Individuals who hear those scripts often attribute the script’s con- tents to the Air Force, but neither Congress nor federal laws relat- ed to the flag assign any special meaning to the individual folds. “Our intent was to move away from giving meaning, or appear- ing to give meaning, to the folds of the flag and just speak to the
