Bb Clarinet Fantasy Piece No. 1 by Robert Schumann Fantasy Piece No. 1 by Robert Schumann (1810 – 1856) was written in 1849. It is the first movement of three pieces written to promote the creative notion of the performer. It allows the performer to be unrestricted with their imagination. Fantasy Piece No. 1 is written to be “Zart und mit Ausdruck” which translates to tenderly and expressively. It begins in the key of A minor to give the audience the sense of melancholy then ends in the key of A major to give resolution and leave the audience looking forward to the next movements. (M. Ars Lyrica Houston takes on its first full- length Baroque opera with Handel’s Agrippina plus the complete “Brandenburg” Concertos by J. S. Bach. Artistic Director Matthew Dirst has created a program “that highlights composers and works that are exceptional, definitive, unusual, even infamous.” With Bach’s six concertos appearing in pairs throughout the season, individual programs explore distinct ways of thinking about the general theme, from unexpected musical gifts to singular collections and composers. Re-Gifting with Royalty opens the season on Friday, September 21st and includes works of leading composers of the Baroque era who often repurposed their own works, especially when a royal patron needed a special gift. Bach’s “Six Concertos for Diverse Instruments” (as he titled them) were assembled, not composed afresh, for the Margrave of Brandenburg, while Couperin collected his chamber music at regular intervals for the royal seal of approval from Louis XIV. The fifth and sixth “Brandenburg” concertos turned the genre on its head, with an unprecedented harpsichord cadenza (in No. 5) and a violin-free texture of lower strings only (in No.

  • Stradella [Romantic Opera, in Three Acts; Text by Deschamps and Pacini
Stradella [Romantic opera, in three acts; text by Deschamps and Pacini. First produced as a lyric drama at the Palais Royal Theatre, Paris, in 1837; rewritten and produced in its present form, at Hamburg, December 30, 1844.] PERSONAGES. Alessandro Stradella, a famous singer. Bassi, a rich Venetian. Leonora, his ward. Barbarino, } Malvolio, } bandits. [Pupils of Stradella, masqueraders, guards, and people of the Romagna.] The scene is laid in Venice and Rome; time, the year 1769. The story of the opera follows in the main the familiar historical, and probably apochryphal, narrative of the experiences of the Italian musician, Alessandro Stradella, varying from it only in the dénouement. Stradella wins the hand of Leonora, the fair ward of the wealthy Venetian merchant, Bassi, who is also in love with her. They fly to Rome and are married, but in the mean time are pursued by two bravos, Barbarino and Malvolio, who have been employed by Bassi to make way with Stradella. They track him to his house, and while the bridal party are absent, they enter in company with Bassi and conceal themselves. Not being able to accomplish their purpose on this occasion, they secure admission a second time, disguised as pilgrims, and are kindly received by Stradella. In the next scene, while Stradella, Leonora, and the two bravos are singing the praises of their native Italy, pilgrims on their way to the shrine of the Virgin are heard singing outside, and Leonora and Stradella go out to greet them. The bravos are so touched by Stradella's singing that they hesitate in their purpose.

  • Handel: Israel in Egypt Performed October 24, 1998
Handel: Israel in Egypt Performed October 24, 1998 It is one of the great ironies of music that the composer who is associated with the greatest choral music in the English language was in fact a German whose lifelong interest was Italian opera. Handel wrote and produced more than forty operas, composed some of the most engaging keyboard and orchestral music of the Baroque period and was one of the great organ virtuosi of all time, yet he is largely remembered for a single musical form, the oratorio, to which he turned only when Italian opera fell out of favor. Early Years George Frideric Handel was born in 1685 in Halle, son of a prominent surgeon at the court of the Duke of Saxony. Handel's father intended a career in law for him, but did allow him to study with Friedrich Zachow, organist at the Liebfraukirche in Halle. Zachow was also a competent composer, well versed in the modern Italian style, and the young Handel was given a firm grounding in composition and theory as well as organ, harpsichord and violin. By the age of thirteen he was already composing cantatas for performance at church and at seventeen was appointed organist at the Domkirche in Halle. In 1703 Handel moved to Hamburg, where he obtained a position as a back desk violinist at the opera. By the next season, at age nineteen, he had become conductor, leading productions from the harpsichord, and had an increasing influence on the artistic direction of the company. It was in Hamburg that he composed his first four operas, two of which were premiered a month apart in 1705.
