Fantasy Piece No. 1 by Robert Schumann
Fantasy Piece No. 1 by Robert Schumann (1810 – 1856) was written in 1849. It is the first movement of three pieces written to promote the creative notion of the performer. It allows the performer to be unrestricted with their imagination. Fantasy Piece No. 1 is written to be “Zart und mit Ausdruck” which translates to tenderly and expressively. It begins in the key of A minor to give the audience the sense of melancholy then ends in the key of A major to give resolution and leave the audience looking forward to the next movements. (M. This musical piece is emotionally fueled. Told from the perspective of someone who has confessed their love for someone only to find that they no longer feel the same way. The piece also ends on a sad note, when they find that they don’t feel the same way.

Samuel Barber (1910 – 1981) was an American composer known for his choral, orchestral, and opera works. He was also well known for his adaptation of poetry into choral and vocal music. Considered to be one of the composers most famous pieces, “Sure on this shining night,” became one of the most frequently programmed songs in both the United States and Europe. (R. Sorenson)

Sonata No. 3 for Alto Saxophone by George F. Handel
George F. Handel (1685 – 1759) was born in Halle, Germany. During his time growing up, he longed to study music as it intrigued Handel very much. His father, however, didn’t agree with him studying music because of what he perceived as a career that would provide little income. Handel ignored his father’s cries to choose a different path and continued his study. He moved to England permanently in 1712 where he made his debut as an opera composer and focused his work with the Royal Academy of Music in London. After operas began to fall in popularity, he began to compose oratorios. His most famous work was the oratorio entitled The Messiah with its famous “Hallelujah Chorus. (M. Reyes from biography.com)

This selection is a fun arrangement of popular themes from one of Mozart’s popular symphonies. Mozart was one of the greatest musical geniuses who ever lived. He died a tragic death at the age of 35.

Les Berceaux by Gabriel Fauré
Les Berceaux by Gabriel Fauré (1845 – 1924), translated “The Cradles” is a lullaby about men departing from their wives and infants to set voyage at sea. The piano part of this song represents the waves of the sea and the crashing of the winds against the water as shown in the crescendo and decrescendo of the piece. By the end of the piece, it is left with a question, “Is it the wives and children that make the men hesitant to leave, or do the waves remind them of when they were once cradled?” (A. Solis)

Aprés un Rêve by Gabriel Fauré
Gabriel Gabriel Fauré (1845 – 1924), was born in Pamiers, France and, at the age of only four years old was sent to a foster home before being adopted. After spending only five years with his adoptive family, he was sent to Paris to study at the School of Classical and Religious Music. His finest vocal piece, Aprés un Rêve translated “after a dream,” paints a picture in which the singer and his beloved come together in a dream, and after awakening describes the longing they feel to be with one another again. Vissi d’arte is the great soprano aria from Giacomo Puccini’s opera Tosca. Puccini (1858 – 1924) was an Italian opera composer considered to be the finest opera composer since Giuseppe Verdi. In this aria the woman in this story has been very giving and faithful throughout her life. She is pleading her case to God as her suffering leads her to believe that she has been abandoned by God.
