AMELITA GALLI-CURCI (Soprano) (with orchestral accompaniment) 12-inch double-sided Red babel (Come d'aurato Verdi sogno .. ... (Tacea la notte placida) (" Ii Trovatore ") D.B. 813 1 (Sung in Italian) Timor dime? (D'amor sull'ali rosee) Verdi (" 11 Trovatore ") (Sung in Italian) T HESE two are taken from the part of Leonora in Il Trovatore. In the first (Tacea In notte) she is telling her confidante, Inez, of her love for the troubadour-knight who sings so often and so sweetly beneath her window. Later on, when that knight is captured by his enemy and rival, she stands outside his prison and there, after a brief recitative, Tinior di me ? (Fear not for me) she makes her beautiful invocation to love to fly to her lover's side and comfort him. For these two situations Verdi has written music that most happily combines vocal brilliance with melodic charm. Both numbers might have been specially composed for Galli-Curci and she sings them with a sureness and sensibility that will cause untold delight wherever the record goes.

TH. I. CHALIAPINE (Bass) (with orchestral accompaniment) 12-inch double-sided Red Label Recitative Finale Susanin's Aria Glinka and of ... (" A Life for Tzar ") (Sung in Russian) D.B. 758 the They Aria Glinka guess the truth-Susanin's .. (" A Life for the Tzar ") is generally regarded as the founder of that Russian school which so astonished Europe during the latter half GLINKAof the nineteenth century and in own own day, and A life for the Tzar may indeed be said to be the first of that long line of masterpieces that includes Prince Igor, Boris Godounov, Le coq d'or, and a host of other operas. But Glinka's work need not depend for immortality on its unique historical interest ; the music itself is so rich in imagination and individuality that it is perfectly well able to stand on its own merits. When interpreted by Chaliapine it reveals its true greatness ; the sense of power that is so conspicuous in all this singer's records becomes all the more impressive for the restraint with which he uses his immense vocal resources. OPERATIC AND VOCAL MUSIC OCTOBER, 1925.

APOLLO GRANFORTE (Baritone) (with orchestral accompaniment) 12-inch double-sided Red Label al factotum della cittä Rossini ... .. D.B. 834 (" Il Barbiere di Siviglia ") (Sung in Italian) IO Lisbona ('° Don Sebastiano ") Donizelfi (Largo ... t (Sung in Italian) AL FACTOTUM (" Way for the city's factotum! LARGOis the amazing number with which Figaro enters at the beginning of I1 Barbiere. One might expect a patter of this kind in " Gilbert and Sullivan " or set to an Irish Reel, but it is the last thing one would associate with Italian opera. All of which goes to demonstrate the breadth of Rossini's genius, for there is no doubt that this is just the music to fit the busY, bustling. -cheerful character for whom it was written. Granforte shows that this merry mood suits him just as well as those more sinister roles from which his last recorded songs were taken (DB835). It is hard to know which to admire most, his breathless jollity in the Largo or the more sustained beauty of his voice in 0 I_ishona, the heartfelt melody with which the old soldier, home at last, greets once more his native city.

MICHELE FLETA (Tenor) (with orchestral accompaniment) 10-indi double-sided Red Label

(Amapola (Sung in Spanish) Joseph M. Lacalle .. D.A. 714 J Bimba, non t'avvicinar (Sung in Italian) G. Cortesi-Beltinelli tremendous tenor is as brilliant as ever it was- the record supplies ample evidence of that-but it is as FI,ETA'Smuch by its richness as its brilliance that it charms our ears this month. He has chosen an Italian song in the canto popolare style and coupled it very happily with what one might describe as its cousin from Spain. There is magic in the lilt and the rhythm of both and we cannot refrain from calling special attention to the delicious effect of a little turn (in quick notes) in the Italian song. This is undoubtedly a record that will find friends in many homes. Admirers of Fleta will be interested to hear that at a concert in Valencia he received a fee of approximately £1,17.

JASCHA HEIFETZ (Violin) (with pianoforte accompaniment) 10-inch double-sided Red Label J Waltz in D Major L. Godowsky D.A. 659 ...... Stimmung, Op. 32, No. 1 J. Achron ...... IF a celebrity record is to justify itself it must combine a number of rare virtues. The artist in the first place must be a person who holds a very exceptional position in the world of music and deserves to hold it, and the particular specimen of his art contained on the record must be worthy of his great reputation. The pieces rendered must be compositions of genuine interest, and the recording, needless to say, must maintain the tradition that has made "His Master's Voice" a name to conjure with all over the world. Submit this Heifetz record to all these vigorous tests and it will emerge triumphant. Heifetz is a violinist who is not content merely to satisfy his critics ; he compels their homage.Godowsky's Waltz has some of the charming capriciousness that so often lends enchantment to the work of this famous pianist- , and it sets off admirably the more remote mood of the Achron Impression. For prices see page 2 of cover. ISOLDE MENGES (Violin) (with pianoforte accompaniment) 12-inch double-sided Black babel. Hornpipe ((a) Handel-Hamilton D. 1023 (b) Rigaudon...... Harty ...... Passacaglia Handel-Hamilton Hartv ...... JUST as there are some painters whose greatness is shown mainly by their power of blending and contrasting colours while others owe their position to their mastery of drawing and of line, so there are some -Dvorak, for instance -to whom colour and atmosphere are everything, and others to whom these things mean far less and who rely for their effects on the beautiful contours of a single line of melody or on the ingenious interweaving of several such lines. It is to this latter class that Handel belongs ; his music is not sentimental, but bluff and straightforward, rising easily to dignity or grandeur when occasion demands, and requiring in its execution clearness and balance above all things. Isolde Menges possesses just these qualities and she has done well to play for us these merry tunes; nothing could have suited her better. Nos. 1 to 8 (Book 2) Nos. 9 to 14 (Book 2) THF,, name of the violinist Paganini has, in the musical world, always been synonymous with virtuosity, and it is not surprising that other composers wishing to write music for the piano that would show of its capacities to the uttermost should have chosen his themes as their basis. We have famous works of this kind by Schumann and Liszt, but even their achieve- ments are thrown into the shade by Brahms' colossal masterpiece. No analysis of this is necessary-in formitissimply a set of varia- tions cf the well-known type-but the imagination that the composer brings to bear on his task, his infinite resource and tireless ingenuity-these things can only be realised by hearing the music which Backhaus plays like the musician and virtuoso that he is.' Here is a treasure that no pianist and no music-lover can afford to be without ; let each see to it that he does not miss his opportunity. Purcell, arr. Moffat U NA BOURNE'S pieces--played with hercustonlaryrefinenlent and polish-will appeal to many tastes. Admirers of Purcell will find our greatest English composer in a delicate vein that becomes him delightfully, while students will discover in the work of William Shield (1748-1829) a fresh proof that the end of the eighteenth century and the beginning of the nine- teenth were not unadorned by British talent even if we produced no composer of the first rank. The fact that Shield wrote ballad operas and is chiefly remarkable as a successor of Mr. Gay will make his music interesting to yet another class-the numerous devotees of The Beggar's Opera. ROYAL ALBERT HALL ORCHESTRA (conducted by EUGENE GOOSSENS) 12-inch double-sided Black Label J" La Boutique Fantasque "- Rossini-Respighi D. 1018 ... Selection, Parts 1 and 2 T HOSE of us who only knew Rossini by his operas received a delightful surprise when the Diaghileff Russian Ballet brought out La Boutique Fantas'ue at the Alhambra Theatre, London, on June 5th, 1919. Rossini did not, of course, write the work exactly as it stands to-day ; his contri- bution was the series of sparkling tunes, which came from his pen in the form of piano pieces and so on. This was the material out of which that splendid band of artists who collaborated with Diaghileff made what was perhaps, the most popular of all the Russian Ballets, the main task of arranging and orchestrating the music being ably carried out by the eminent Italian composer, Ottorino Respighi. No one who saw the first performance of the work will ever forget it, and now we have the pleasure of meeting it again in one of the best records the Albert Hall Orchestra has ever made. The numbers used are (part one) Cossack's Dance, Nocturne, Mazurka, Tarantella, and (part tloe) Dance of the Doll,, Can-can,' and Galop. EVELYN SCOTNEY (Soprano)

(with orchestral accompaniment) 12-inch double-sided Black Label

Dearest Name (Caro Nome) (" Rigoletto ,') Verdi D. 1024 (11 {Ave Maria Othello ") Verdi tT is the final Act and the great tragedy is approaching its j climax. Desdemona, alone in her room, awaits Othello ; Emilia has just left her and now she kneels before the image of the Madonna in prayer. Her heart is full of foreboding and approaching Death seems already to cast his chill shadow over her spirit. She beseeches our Lady to pray for the guilty, yea, and for the innocent too, and concludes with a final " Ave ! Amen ! " on a phrase that seems to rise straight to heaven itself. Without any prejudice to her previous records we may say that Evelyn Scotney has made of this moving song and of the wonder- ful though more familiar Caro none on the other side of the disc her finest gramophone achievement hitherto. Both are sung in a manner that puts her on a level with the greatest vocalists of the day. This is high praise, but it will not seem excessive to any who have heard the record.

Besides sound craftsmanship and a gift for melody Manson had the virtue of linking his music to poems that have a genuine literary value, as we can see for ourselves by the aid of the excellent diction of Walter Widdop, a singer new to our lists, whose golden voice is matched by musicianly qualities that are rare indeed.
