In Summer Music for All Seasons MUSIC FOR ALL SEASONS LUCERNE FESTIVAL at Easter | 19 – 28 March 2010 LUCERNE FESTIVAL in Summer | 12 August – 18 September 2010 LUCERNE FESTIVAL at the Piano | 22 – 28 November 2010 KKL Lucerne Claudio Abbado Lucerne Pierre Boulez Program Synopsis 2010 www.lucernefestival.ch Dear Friends of Music: The whole year at a glance: this fl yer gives you a neat synopsis of our plans for the entire LUCERNE FESTIVAL throughout 2010, covering Easter and Summer as well as the November Piano series. For the fi rst time, you can fi nd all three of the “seasons” that make up LUCERNE FESTIVAL combined in a single publication. The fl yer is conveniently arranged to serve as an indispensable concert-planner, easy to fi t into a pocket or handbag. When completely unfolded, it readily serves as a guide to every concert programmed for 2010. And what you see at a glance will astonish you: The repertoire that has been planned for the next twelve months is rich indeed. Stirring and atmospheric music-making, powerful feelings, and infectious excitement are on tap for the Easter Festival, which launches with a residency by the Venezuelan Youth Orchestra. This ensemble of highly gifted young South Americans will present three programs, to be led by Claudio Abbado, Gustavo Dudamel, and Diego Matheuz. Compositions inspired by the Passion story will of course be featured, in works by Bach and Beethoven. Music of a spiritually uplifting nature will also be celebrated when the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra engages with Anton Bruckner’s legacy during its Easter residency. “Eros” is the motto for this year’s Summer Festival, which is centered around the stories of famous lovers. Claudio Abbado and the LUCERNE FESTIVAL ORCHESTRA sing the praises of true love and fi delity as expressed in Beethoven’s Fidelio, while Esa-Pekka Salonen and the Philharmonia Orchestra perform Tristan und Isolde in a concert production directed by Peter Sellars. We hear the moving love-tragedy of Romeo and Juliet as retold in Sergei Prokofi ev’s ballet, and we encounter the couple Pelleas and Melisande in scores by such varied composers as Fauré and Sibelius. Our featured “artiste étoile,” pianist Hélène Grimaud, will present all the facets of her artistry as she performs piano concertos and chamber music and partners with singers in recital. This year brings us a Swiss artist, Dieter Ammann, as our composer-in-residence, while we recognize Switzerland’s intensely active music scene with a total of 25 world premières and a program focus on Swiss contemporaries (“(z)eidgenössisCH”). And with his LUCERNE FESTIVAL ACADEMY, Pierre Boulez will explore Mahler and Stravinsky: a genuine musical declaration of love. As we turn to November, Lucerne is transformed once again into a Mecca of pianism. We have extended invitations to Evgeny Kissin, András Schiff, Andreas Staier, Grigory Sokolov, and Pierre-Laurent Aimard to perform in recital. Bernard Haitink and the Chamber Orchestra of Europe will inaugurate their Brahms cycle with the two piano concertos, featuring Emanuel Ax as soloist. Something here is sure to strike your fancy! I hope reading about the year ahead fi lls you with pleasant anticipation and I look forward to many encounters with you, whether at the Easter, Summer, or Piano Festival. Others such as Riccardo Chailly and Paavo Järvi are returning to the Philharmonie ros trum after a longer absence. Leading instrumental soloists in the new sea son lineup include Lisa Batiashvili, Murray Perahia, Maurizio Pollini and the season’s ArtistinResidence, Leonidas Kavakos. — And, once again, the Digital Concert Hall will also be showcasing many items beyond the Berliner Philharmoniker’s regular offerings, in cluding presentations of the orchestra’s Education Programme, concerts by visiting youth orchestras, artist interviews and much more. Some 40 times this season you will be able to join Berlin Philharmonie audiences via the Internet. And in our video archive you’ll discover another 150 live concerts, documentaries and wideranging bonus material. — Opened in 2009, the Digital Concert Hall is generously supported by Deutsche Bank, which has sponsored the Berliner Philharmoniker since 1989 and makes possible the orchestra’s Education Programme.
