  • 13Th February 2021 Dear All Tomorrow Is One of Those Strangely
13th February 2021 Dear all Tomorrow is one of those strangely named Sundays – the Sunday Next Before Lent. I’m not quite sure why the ‘next’ comes in , but it interesting that both of the penitential seasons in the church calendar have a countdown… 3rd Sunday before Advent, 2nd Sunday before Lent etc.. We often see Advent and Lent as periods leading up to the exciting seasons of Christmas and Easter, but the church calendar requires us to take them seriously in their own right. What will we be doing for Lent? Let’s gear ourselves up… get ready… set… and, go! In a recent letter I suggested a few books or courses you might be interested in. I also invited anyone to request an ash cross stone, to be left on their doorstep. Please let me know by Wednesday, so that I know how many to prepare. Tomorrow’s service details: Readings – 2 Kings 2: 1-12; 2 Corinthians 4: 3-6; Psalm 50: 1-6; Mark 9: 2-9 Hymns: Jesus on the mountain peak; ‘Tis good, Lord, to be here. Lent Course: Next Thursday is the day after Ash Wednesday, and so we will put our study of Mark’s gospel on hold, and instead follow our Lent Course. The details are the same as always: We will meet on Zoom, Thursdays 2.30-3.30ish pm. The Zoom details are: https://us04web.zoom.us/j/8109399155?pwd=STVVTU44RzJxTFFHbTY1MnI0bjJ2Zz09 Meeting ID: 810 939 9155 Passcode: 1w2C9a Please note that, on Thursday 25th February the Lent Course will take place in the morning , at 10.30am.

  • Report to the Friends of Music
Summer, 2020 Dear Friends of the Music Department, The 2019-20 academic year has been like no other. After a vibrant fall semester featur- ing two concerts by the Parker Quartet, the opening of the innovative Harvard ArtLab featuring performances by our faculty and students, an exciting array of courses and our inaugural department-wide throwdown–an informal sharing of performance projects by students and faculty–we began the second semester with great optimism. Meredith Monk arrived for her Fromm Professorship, Pedro Memelsdorff came to work with the Univer- sity Choir as the Christoph Wolff Scholar, Esperanza Spalding and Carolyn Abbate began co-teaching an opera development workshop about Wayne Shorter’s Iphigenia, and Vijay Iyer planned a spectacular set of Fromm Players concerts and a symposium called Black Speculative Musicalities. And then the world changed. Harvard announced on March 10, 2020 that due to COVID-19, virtual teaching would begin after spring break and the undergraduates were being sent home. We had to can- cel all subsequent spring events and radically revise our teaching by learning to conduct classes over Zoom. Our faculty, staff, and students pulled together admirably to address the changed landscape. The opera workshop (Music 187r) continued virtually; students in Vijay Iyer’s Advanced Ensemble Workshop (Music 171) created an album of original mu- sic, “Mixtape,” that is available on Bandcamp; Meredith Monk created a video of students in her choral class performing her work in progress, Fields/Clouds, and Andy Clark created an incredible performance of the Harvard Choruses for virtual graduation that involved a complicated process of additive recording over Zoom.

  • Richard Strauss's Ariadne Auf Naxos
Richard Strauss’s Ariadne auf Naxos - A survey of the major recordings by Ralph Moore Ariadne auf Naxos is less frequently encountered on stage than Der Rosenkavalier or Salome, but it is something of favourite among those who fancy themselves connoisseurs, insofar as its plot revolves around a conceit typical of Hofmannsthal’s libretti, whereby two worlds clash: the merits of populist entertainment, personified by characters from the burlesque Commedia dell’arte tradition enacting Viennese operetta, are uneasily juxtaposed with the claims of high art to elevate and refine the observer as embodied in the opera seria to be performed by another company of singers, its plot derived from classical myth. The tale of Ariadne’s desertion by Theseus is performed in the second half of the evening and is in effect an opera within an opera. The fun starts when the major-domo conveys the instructions from “the richest man in Vienna” that in order to save time and avoid delaying the fireworks, both entertainments must be performed simultaneously. Both genres are parodied and a further contrast is made between Zerbinetta’s pragmatic attitude towards love and life and Ariadne’s morbid, death-oriented idealism – “Todgeweihtes Herz!”, Tristan und Isolde-style. Strauss’ scoring is interesting and innovative; the orchestra numbers only forty or so players: strings and brass are reduced to chamber-music scale and the orchestration heavily weighted towards woodwind and percussion, with the result that it is far less grand and Romantic in scale than is usual in Strauss and a peculiarly spare ad spiky mood frequently prevails.

  • Aufstieg Und Fall Eines Populisten Wiederaufnahme Von Wagners „Rienzi“ in Der Oper Leipzig – Andreas Schager in Der Titelpartie
Pressemitteilung der Oper Leipzig, 13. Januar 2016 AUFSTIEG UND FALL EINES POPULISTEN WIEDERAUFNAHME VON WAGNERS „RIENZI“ IN DER OPER LEIPZIG – ANDREAS SCHAGER IN DER TITELPARTIE Am Samstag, 16.

  • Fascinace Wagnerem TZ Aj.Indd
PRESS RELEASE opera Mgr. SILVIA HRONCOVÁ Director of Opera Faszination Wagner, a remarkable project combining opera and film, will receive its world premiere in Prague. Andreas Schager, one of the most acclaimed contemporary Heldentenors, will perform at the Forum Karlín. Prague, 4 October 2018 On 25 October, the National Theatre in Prague will host the world premiere of the unique Faszination Wagner project. Following the first night, at the Forum Karlín, it will be presented in other cities in Europe. The project, encompassing an opera performance and screening of a film, specially created for this occasion, may even be referred to as revolutionary. The evening features selected highlights from Richard Wagner’s operas, which will be performed by the State Opera Orchestra, conducted by Matthias Fletzberger, and the stellar singer Andreas Schager, one of the most acclaimed contemporary Heldentenors. The State Opera Orchestra, which is participating in a project of this kind for the very first time, will be led by the Austrian pianist and conductor Matthias Fletzberger, who said: “Wagner’s visions transcended the limits of music. His aim was to create a universal, comprehensive artwork, which would employ all the senses at the same time. Transformation of the content of live music to the form of film within the concert affords Wagner’s work a new dimension.” Along with Andreas Schager, his wife, the world-renowned violinist Lidia Baich, will appear as a soloist. The entire concept of the project, including the film, was created by the German stage and film director, screenwriter and musicologist of Turkish descent Selcuk Cara, who started his artistic career as an opera singer.
