Yilmaz1,*, T. H. Cetin2, B. Ozturkmen2, M. Kanoglu2 ABSTRACT In this paper presents an analysis of the thermodynamic cycles the most commonly used for the liquefaction of gases in order to evaluate and compare their performance under given working conditions and system component efficiencies. The cycles considered are simple Linde-Hampson cycle, precooled Linde- Hampson cycle, Claude cycle, and Kapitza cycle. First and second law relations are investigated for each cycle and performance parameters are evaluated. Thermodynamically performances criteria are compared of cycles with respect to the each other. Cycles are model in the computer environment and analyzed with Engineering Equation Solver (EES) software program. Cycles of the liquefaction fractions, coefficient of performances and second law of efficiencies are calculated for the liquefaction of different gases. Second law efficiencies are calculated as 13.4%, 21.8%, 62.9%, and 77.2% for simple Linde-Hampson cycle, pre-cooled Linde-Hampson cycle, Claude cycle, and Kapitza cycle, respectively. Claude and Kapitza cycles give better performance but simple and precooled Linde-Hampson cycle has the advantages of the simplicity of their setup. A generic process for obtaining a Helium pure fraction which has lower capital and operating costs should be provided. In order to achieve this objective, a new concept for obtaining a Helium pure fraction from a crude Helium fraction, is proposed based on simulations run under diverse process conditions. This concept is characterized by; reducing the plant safety requirements due to the extensive separation of combustible components, compact extraction of Helium- rich fraction is achieved. Further re-purification is included in the subsequent Helium liquefaction step through selective adsorption, hence then increasing the purity of the Helium product and reducing the plant energy consumption required for liquefying Helium- rich fraction and the valuable Helium boil-off routed from the storage facility. The Nitrogen-rich fraction is routed to Nitrogen liquefaction installation. LIN is generated within HeRU for LHe shielding and container cooling. Surplus GAN either can be liquefied and used within cryogenic NG plant as process coolant or be vented to atmosphere. The techniques used to produce cryogenic temperatures differ in several ways from those dealing with conventional refrigeration. In practice these two areas often overlap and the boundary between conventional and cryogenic refrigeration is often indistinct. Significant reductions in temperature often have very pronounced effects on the properties of materials and the behavior of systems.
