    Hindi-Urdu Heritage Language Schools in the United States Dr. Rucheeta Kulkarni, Arizona State University Nearly 500 million people claim Hindi or Urdu as their first or second language, making this the fourth largest language population in the world (Lewis, 2009). Nearly one million of these speakers live in the United States (Shin & Kominski, 2010). While educational opportunities in these two languages have traditionally been designed for non-heritage graduate students with professional academic interests, there is a growing demand for and availability of courses for heritage language learners (Gambhir, 2008). Hindi and Urdu are now taught not only in colleges and universities, but also in a small number of high schools across the country. In addition, community-based organizations offer classes for Hindi and Urdu heritage language speakers. Following a brief historical overview and discussion of background issues, this brief describes these educational programs and their future prospects. Historical Overview and Background Hindi and Urdu are closely related languages, sharing the same grammar and much of the same vocabulary. However, the languages use different scripts, borrow literary and formal vocabulary from different sources, and have very different socio- religious identities. As Hindi adopted the Devanagari script (which is also the modern-day script for Sanskrit), Urdu adopted the Shahmukhi script (which is a Punjabi script derived from the Nasta’liq font of modified Arabic). Urdu is also heavily influenced by Persian. Thus, today Hindi has a growing Sanskrit lexicon and Urdu, a more Persian-oriented one. As a result, language has become a strong signifier of identity, with Hindi being associated with Hindus and Urdu with Muslims.

    Hindi USA Books and Syllabus (2018-19) hen we began teaching Hindi to children in the U.S., we noticed that the available materials were all schoolbooks from Hindi curricula used in India. These materials assumed a Wknowledge and familiarity with speaking Hindi in day-to-day life that children of Indian origin living abroad simply did not have. It is for this reason that HindiUSA decided to make its own books and syllabus, specially made for children living abroad. When writing these books, we have tried to keep in mind both Hindi-speaking and non-Hindi speaking students, parents, and families to provide easy-to-use materials to cater to all of our students’ needs. It is for this reason that not only do our books incorporate conversation, but we also have incorporated colorful pictures and large-font text to help capture the interests of students learning in an after-school setting. Each level includes one textbook and two to three workbooks with helpful, guided activities. We give particular attention to students in our Starter-I and Starter-II levels, where we try to develop an interest through audio-visual materials, and many of our levels incorporate flashcards to help students study beyond the classroom. How does Hindi USA Teach? lthough HindiUSA is a volunteer organization, we believe in teaching in a professional way. AWe try to do so in the following ways: All of HindiUSA’s teachers are required to attend a teacher’s training workshop that pertains to their specific level of instruction HindiUSA provides its teachers with a host of materials—beyond just the books—that can be used in an interactive setting within the classroom.

One such story is that of Renuka Madhar from Donwad village who was forced to drop out of school to get married. But Renuka wants to become a doctor. To bring her dream to life, the team at CRY America supported Project, Mahila Abhivrudhi Mattu Samrakshana Samasthe (MASS) worked with the school authorities and counselled her parents about the ill effects of child marriage. Through a number of relentless efforts the marriage plans were stopped. Renuka is now back in school and pursues her dream of becoming a doctor. You will also read about people and businesses who have come forward to make children’s rights possible - our donors, volunteers, event sponsors, media sponsors, staff and other supporters. Only because of the support received from 20,885 donors and 2,000 volunteers like you, CRY America has been able to irreversibly transform the lives of 600,558 underprivileged children living across 2,726 villages and slums through support to 70 Projects in India and USA. Thousands of children are still looking to us, to help them realize their dreams too. We hope that you will be inspired by these stories and believe that together, we have and will continue to bring children’s dreams to life.
