3W Report Uttarakhand (August 2013).Docx Humanity Road - Uttarakhand 3W Report Activation: Uttarakhand Flooding, India Publication Date: August 12, 2013 Additional Information: DHN Solution Team Deployment Information Highlights Over a hundred organizations including ninety three relief organizations and seven digital organizations from the volunteer & technical community (V&TC) are responding to the monsoon floods in India. Over 4,200 villages are impacted by catastrophic flooding. On July 4th the Digital Humanitarian Network activation received a request from SEEDS India for mapping support and for collating aid response by region. The 3W Report (“Who, What Where”) is a report compiled from traditional and new media on who is responding, where, with what aid. The Humanity Road team led by regional team lead, Paras Nath Sidh developed and published report: http://www.humanityroad.org/India3W. Volunteers interested in joining the effort can sign up here. Organizations that wish to be listed can complete this form as a request to be added. About the Humanity Road: Humanity Road’s mission is to educate the public before, during and after disasters on how to survive, sustain and reunite with loved ones. http://www.humanityroad.org/AboutUs.htm Core services include volunteer surge support for Crisis Communications including both Virtual and Physical deployments. About the Digital Humanitarian Network: The purpose of the Digital Humanitarian Network (DHNetwork) is to leverage digital networks in support of 21st century humanitarian response. More specifically, the aim of this network-of-networks is to form a consortium of Volunteer & Technical Communities (V&TCs) and to provide an interface between formal, professional humanitarian organizations and informal yet skilled-and-agile volunteer & technical networks. ITBP DG Ajay Chadha said ITBP personnel combed Bhairon Chetti and confirmed there were no survivors. “We have ordered two more Netra UAVs from the manufacturers and expect to deploy them once the weather is clear,” Chadha said. He said the weather was expected to improve by Friday and in the meantime personnel on the ground are trying to evacuate those stranded through repaired roads. An ITBP team has already repaired the damaged roads from Badrinath to Hanuman Chatti which is now being used for rescue operations. Meanwhile, the total bodies recovered by the National Disaster Response Force and ITBP personnel, who are combing the area, reached 525. The bodies were handed over to the local police for identification and funeral rites. The Forest Department was asked to arrange 50 tonnes of wood and ghee for the funeral rites of victims at Kedarnath site on Tuesday. Uttarakhand Chief Minister Vijay Bahuguna said those who are still stranded are safe and there is no threat to their life. “There are people stranded in Badrinath and Harsil but they are being provided food and water and as soon as the weather is clear, they will be evacuated,” Bahuguna said. Bahuguna also said that approximately 40,000 sq km of area is affected by flashfloods and landslides.

    VALLEY OF FLOWERS Coordinates: 30°44′00″N 79°38′00″E Best Season: 15th June to 15 September Garhwal Himalaya - Uttarakhand Valley of Flowers National Park is an Indian national park, located at a height in West Himalaya. It is renowned for its meadows of endemic alpine flowers and the variety of flora found there. It is located in Uttarakhand state. This richly diverse area is also home to rare and endangered animals, including the Asiatic black bear, snow leopard, brown bear and blue sheep. The gentle landscape of the Valley of Flowers National Park complements the rugged mountain wilderness of Nanda Devi National Park to the east. Together they encompass a unique transition zone between the mountain ranges of the Zanskar and Great Himalaya. The park stretches over an expanse of 87.50 km². Both parks are encompassed in the Nanda Devi Biosphere Reserve (223,674 ha) which is further surrounded by a buffer zone (5,148.57 km²).This Reserve is in the UNESCO World Network of Biosphere Reserves since 2004. The pristine water of Pushpawati River divides this enchanting valley into two parts. Capture thick dew drops on the vivid flowers, listen to the chirping of birds and enjoy the salubrious air of the Himalayas. While on expedition to Mt. Kamet this Valley was introduced to the world as the Valley of Flowers by Frank S, Smith, a mountaineer, explorer and botanist who camped here for several weeks in the monsoon of 1937.The legend is that Hanuman collected “Sanjeevani” herb from this valley to revive Lakshman.

It has been found that the incidences of the flood are increasing very rapidly. This paper aims to study the trends of flood across western states in India and their disaster management plans in place. Disaster management in India has very organised but administration and implementation of these programs demand more efficiency. The coastal strip wedged between the Arabian Sea and the Western Ghats mountain chain is prone to inundation. Unusually heavy monsoon rains have got the entire State of Kerala in the grip of a massive, unprecedented flood: the last time anything like this has happened was in 1924. Even before the rains, Kerala's economy presented a mixed picture: relatively higher per capita income, but slow growth and high unemployment rates. As torrential rains abated in Kerala, the major question confronting the State and its unfortunate citizens is an assessment of the colossal loss of property, agriculture and infrastructure and the focus has turned towards the short-term negative implications and how will it rebuild its economy. There were evidently many political, economic, social and managerial lessons to take away from the disaster. The paper will describe the magnitude of the disaster in Kerala and the impact on the human population. Like the most loving of mothers, She has served us, nourished us and enabled us to grow as a people, without hesitation, without discrimination, without vacation for millennia. Regardless of what we have done to Her, the Ganga continues in Her steady fl ow, providing the waters that offer nourishment, livelihoods, faith and hope: the waters that represents the very life-blood of our nation. If one may think of the planet Earth as a body, its trees would be its lungs, its rivers would be its veins, and the Ganga would be its very soul. For pilgrims, Her course is a lure: From Gaumukh, where she emerges like a beacon of hope from icy glaciers, to the Prayag of Allahabad, where Mother Ganga stretches out Her glorious hands to become one with the Yamuna and Saraswati Rivers, to Ganga Sagar, where She fi nally merges with the ocean in a tender embrace. As all oceans unite together, Ganga’s reach stretches far beyond national borders. All are Her children. For perhaps a billion people, Mother Ganga is a living goddess who can elevate the soul to blissful union with the Divine. She provides benediction for infants, hope for worshipful adults, and the promise of liberation for the dying and deceased. Every year, millions come to bathe in Ganga’s waters as a holy act of worship: closing their eyes in deep prayer as they reverently enter the waters equated with Divinity itself.
